A PC based spy on an Intel-based Mac 10.11.14 Tiger

Question: A PC based spy on an Intel-based Mac 10.11.14 Tiger

So I opened my system monitor just for the heck of it this morning and when I did so I noticed I had the cnql1213.dnl power-pc based THING running on my intel-based mac. I see it is something called a Vundogrb. My question is can I just delete this or is there more that I need to do to successfully rid myself of it. I used to use Windows, in fact I still do sometimes for my laptop, but most of the time I used my Mac and so long since I really worried about this stuff that I'm not sure exactly what to do with it?Can you tell me something about this creepy intruder and how I need to deal with it?Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Create Icon on desktop to open a websiteYa, I?ve done that for ever and it works great. But today I was on a chat with Norton support he was on my pc remotely trying to fix a LAN Proxy problem. He uninstalled several problem malware programs and installed some other programs including Google Chrome. After he was off the system I was checking around my HP Laptop and noticed the the Desktop Icons with Apps on the PC worked but all the web based icons did not work anymore. I did the procedure like I had many times before from a web site but the Icon just will not work at all. The error I get on all of them is when I click on the icon to open itIs Application Not Found.I?ve never seen this one before but I?ll keep trying to find the solution unless one of you gentlemen have a answer for me, I do plan on uninstalling Google Chrome and testing the icons again to see if that might have something to do with it?Thanks.Rod [email protected]

The problem:
The PC works for sometime (maybe an hour or maybe few minutes). Suddenly it freezes. Restarting the PC, makes it work for few minutes and it restarts or comes to a blue screen (Error : IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or PAGE_AREA.... ). Restarting again brings the blue screen again just before the Desktop appears. Restarting few more times makes the PC not even bringing the Display (even Intel logo does not comes prior to bootup).

I do see one indication in this PC. When I switch On the wall socket, the PC performs a POST. The Power, HDD, Keyboard LED lights blink and the fan noise comes for a few seconds and go off. When I power on the PC after this, I observed that the PC works fine.

But when freezing starts happening, the subsequent restarts, even after a complete power down (from wall socket as well), does not makes these LEDs to blink. This is an indication that something is wrong and it freezes for sure when the PC is powered on.

Strange:
I had called up a technician, who services PCs in our area. He took the PC to his workshop and it works well without doing/altering anything to the system. Change could be the input/output devices and the modem (ADSL). As he brings it back to my home, it all starts again to freeze.

Whts been tried:
1) Changed LAN cards and on different slots
2) Changed motherboard
3) Re-formatted/installed windows
4) Updated drivers (VGA, Sound, LAN)
5) Changed RAM
6) Removed UPS
7) Changed SMPS, cables

Well it looks like you've tried everything in the basket and still no joy.I assume the inside of the PC is dustfree and the heatsink has been thoroughly cleaned.Double check all connections again. Is the heatsink flush to the motherboard and processor? There are issues with McAfee in some cases...are you running it?Do a complete antivirus scan with Superantispyware and Malwarebytes.Do you see any conflicts in device manager? What  was the last piece of hardware or software installed before this started to occur?.....remove it if you can remember....Incompatible drivers may be the problem....Did problems start after a windows update...are your service packs up to date.Is the 300W PS adequate for what you have running?Check/swap the power cord from the wall to the PC.....the fact the tech had no problem leads me to believe he may have had his own cord to use and it came out clean.Try post the complete STOP error in detail, it will assist in the diagnosis.

Check under device manager and find the hard drive there and delete it.

Hi, I'm currently running a Windows 10 Pro PC with a 32-bit architecture. My processor allows for a x64 upgrade, but my system's information shows that my PC is x86 based. Can I still upgrade? I also have 6.00 gigabytes of ram, definitely enough for an upgrade.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:x64-based processor, but x86-based PC; can I upgrade to x64 bit?

No you cannot upgrade a 32-bit system to a 64-bit one. You can however, clean install a 64-bit system instead of the 32-bit one.

Hello,
I have a 32 bit windows 10 and x86 based pc but x64 based processor, originally it was a windows 10 64 bit and x64 based pc but my hard drive broke and got bad sector,it got fixed my a computer fixer but he installed 32 bit instead of 64 bit,i have a windows 10 x64 installtion media but when i run it it says it cannot run on my pc,i really wanna go back to 64 bit because only 2.60gb of my ram is usable out of 4gb

Answer:Wndows 10 x86,x86 based PC but x64 based processor,can it go x64

It could be because of some driver or other HW but if processor is 64bit (and it is), 64bit OS should run on it without problems.

This is not good news, especially for those people who purchased recently a new machine with the Intel Cedar Point chipset. From Some Intel-Based Tablets Flunk Windows 8 Upgrade - Hardware -:

Numerous models of Windows 7 tablets and netbooks, some less than a year old, that should be upgradeable to Windows 8 won't be able to handle Microsoft's new operating system due to problems with the Intel chips that power them, according to computer manufacturers and frustrated users.
The problems affect systems that use the current version of Intel's Atom line, known as Cedar Trail. Intel is rolling out a new version of Atom, called Clover Trail, that is specifically designed for Windows 8 hardware, but that's too late for many users who previously bought systems on the belief they could upgrade later.

Affected products use the Intel Cedar Trail N2800 processor and the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3650. It also appears that Intel's previous version of Atom, Pine Trail, which also uses GMA 3150 for graphics is affected.

If it's a name brand machine like Dell etc. you can go to the manufacturer's website and see if they have the drivers for your model. If it's a custom built, you need to identify the parts and manually search the web for the drivers. If the machine is already running with another os on it, you could do a compatibility check with the Win 7 compatibility software. http://www.microsoft.com/download/e...

Hello all, Corporate user here, demoing the Edge for our mobile sales force. Have zapped Windows 7 and replaced with XP due to legacy reasons, and am struggling with the driver support. Coming from Dell, where the driver support is second to none, I was fustrated to find I had to manually download each driver, and also found that many drivers are inappropriate to the machine - AMD drivers mixed in with Intels. I'm still struggling with several drivers, including the HDMI drivers, bluetooth drivers, and I suspect they are within the drivers packages I have downloaded that exclaim that I cannot install as they do not meet hardward requirements. Can anyone help me with searching out some of the required drivers - have they had any of these issues? Come on Lenovo - as a corporate player, your driver support has to be better! Answer:XP Driver Suite for Intel based Edge

Hi Neil_Bolton, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

The tool you want for automatic driver and software downloads is ThinkVantage System Update:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=TVSU-UPDATE

The best way to find available XP drivers for manual install is to browse by product for your system and OS on the support site, then click Downloads and drivers. From that page:

The HDMI drivers will be part of the Intel chipset package:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-74299

The Bluetooth drivers are here:

Is it worth it?

OK, so I installed Win 7 x64 on a Gateway FX7026 PC that originally came with Vista. The Intel Matrix Storage (ICH9R SATA controller) driver for Vista x64 is available through Gateway, and Intel offers the inf chipset updater for chipset driver updates after the fact.

First I tried installing W7 in AHCI mode, but it failed, then I tried to do it by using the Load Driver function and pointing to the Vista x64 ICH9R AHCI driver on a usb stick, still no dice. Therefore I would have to slipstream the ACHI driver into the W7 source and try again. I installed W7 x64 with the BIOS in IDE SATA mode instead of trying to use the Vista x64 ICH9R drivers in a slipstreamed source.

I know there are registry hacks to enable AHCI after the OS and drivers are loaded.

HOWEVER, does it really matter for a desktop use PC? NCQ is great for servers, but if I don't do video editing, will AHCI really even be any benefit?

In other words, should I bother trying to get AHCI going?

One more question, is it just me or does the ICH9R RAID mode suck? I had another mobo with ICH9R and tried to put some identical WD HDDs in RAID 0, it worked for a while then one of the disks fell off the RAID for no apparent reason. On this mobo I tried to create a RAID using the built in utility (RAID 0), but it failed. If I could get it working, is it worth it? Or is it a gimmick?

Or maybe I need HDDs that are truely made for RAID, and normal drives just won't do?

thanks,

b

Answer:AHCI on ICH9R on G33 based Intel DG33SXG2 (Gateway)

RAID just uses normal HD's. Nothing special. A matched size, speed(RPM's) and brand is advisable.

So identical WD's should be fine. I was going to go RAID 0 but almost everyone on this forum said it was a waste.
So I set up one OS and one drive for backup.
You already found one of the reasons for NOT doing it. One goes and you loose everything.

I made Windows System Images and Macrium system images stored on the second drive.
I can restore the main HD even if one software doesn't work. In less than an hour I can be up and running with all updates etc. with a clean start. I keep a good old and a recent image to reimage with.
Overkill maybe but I got the HD space so why not.

I wouldn't worry about the AHCI. Just run SATA make back ups as I have to be stored on storage drive and enjoy.

I'm in the process of building a new system:-
Gigabyte board with amd 965 processor etc. and was about to load windows8 rp from scratch as I wanted sata3 native capability.
I then decided to first have a go at loading my previous W8, that was installed on an Asus board with a q6600 processor. Apart from being a totally different chipset for the board, no other item other than the hard drive was the same.
I fully thought that it would fail along the line but after some 10 minutes "getting devices ready" it rebooted into the start menu with all previously installed programs and customization working.

However I doubt whether such a change will pass registration/activation tests if done after the final release.
I think they are going to track the inbuilt mac address on a board as part of the activation process; which will however allow you to swap out other major components without a problem.

Interesting, because I also tried this experiment going from an AMD system to an Intel system. I'm surprised it booted and worked as well as it did.

Intel I7 processor, Win 7 64-bit pro. m-audio delta 66 with the latest drivers.

The first time I open IE after a boot up, and load a web page that has sound, audiodg.exe gets executed and reads hundreds of files off of the the hard drive...almost all of them reference amd in the filename.) This process uses a lot CPU and disk IO effectively locking the system for about 30 to 45 seconds.

Once audiodg.exe is done loading what it thinks it needs, the system goes back to normal.

There are no further updated for the delta 66 driver. Not sure if there is something in the registry that could prevent this from happening.

Kyle Jedrusiak

Answer:audiodg.exe loading hundreds of amd based files on an Intel system

I have a recording studio (Sonar X3 and a Roland Studio-Capture).

If I remember this the Delta 66 is a PCI device. Most newer motherboards that have a PCI slot on them are not a true PCI bus slot but a PCI slot that is bridged to the PCIe bus. This can be a problem for many older PCI devices. I don't know what problem it can cause for the Delta 66, but I've seen discussions on the Sonar forum and the gearslutz forum.

I also see, on forums, that you should be using ASIO and not WDM with this device. I don't know how I.E. handles sound with something other than the standard PC sound, but this could be the issue.

Looking back at some old threads on this forum, one thing that came up is the bits that you have set for the Delta 66. If you use 16 bits/44.1Khz that seems to cause less problems than higher bitrates.

I have a 2 year old HP Envy x2 hybrid touchscreen laptop with the z2760 (Clover Trail) chip set and GMA graphics. When I installed Windows 10 for the first time it failed to recognize the graphics chip and installed the Microsoft Basic VGA Adapter instead.

Updating the chipset software using the most recently released package from HP.com (for Windows 8.1) enables the accelerated graphics, but the driver isn't stable. Edge crashes regularly, the Windows Store doesn't render properly (missing/invisible text/buttons), and the driver tends to crash/recover when coming out of suspend/sleep.

Question: Does anyone know of a newer driver for Intel z2760-based PCs that fully supports Windows 10? The current driver version 9.14.3.1168 is barely functional and quite frustrating to work with. I keep checking Windows Update in the hope that Microsoft will release an updated driver but so far no luck.

Answer:Intel GMA Driver Crashing on Atom Z2760-based HP Envy x2

Acer made a tablet called the Iconia W3 810 that uses the same CPU. They have a download package that includes a slightly newer Windows 8.1 driver, but it is 32 bit only. The version is 1176. See here:
http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...C=ACER&SC=PA_6

I wouldn't try to install this complete driver package. Instead unzip it, then look at the folder MI, Drivers, Graphics.

Give it a go and see if it works?

I reinstalled XP, and when I navigate to "network connections" and it shows the icon of what is supposed to symbolize my local area connection, all it says below the icon is "enabled" rather than "connected". I tried uninstalling it within XP, rebooting and reinstalling it...I tried releasing/renewing config in command...nothing though.

with this computer I installed xp with, it was just given to me and it's fairly old...the exact model of my ethernet card is "Intel 21040-Based PCI Ethernet Adapter (Generic) 5.5.4.0" and I cant seem to find any drivers on the net for it.

help!

Does the NIC show up error free in Device Manager under Network Controllers?

FWIW, I did a search on your description and the first hit with Google was the following driver download, looks like what you have: http://www.soft32.com/download_171096.html

Well, I've discovered that my WRT54GL with Tomato (and even worse with DD-WRT) is struggling to keep up with my torrent habits. With uTorrent open, my Internet connection just slows to a crawl. I have tried a plethora of different settings, mostly dealing with QoS, but it just doesn't cut it. The WRT54GL has a limited amount of memory and processing power.

So, I've come across the Intel D945GCLF board with an integrated Atom 230 processor on it. It should be considerably faster than I'll ever need for a router. I'd demote my WRT54GL to wireless-only duty as an access point, with the data being sent through the Atom router. So, I was wondering two things: first, is this the best solution for me? It's quite cheap at ~$60, roughly the cost of my WRT54GL when I bought it, so what else would compare at this price range? Second, what software and/or OS should I get to do this? QoS is important, and if possible, I'd like to "throttle" P2P connections when they are taking up my entire bandwidth while another connection (ie. http) is attempting to connect.

I mean, I can pretty much wing it and put something together, but I want an informed opinion about what the BEST solution is.

Answer:I want to build an Intel Atom-based router; need opinions and suggestions.

i was looking at that board a few weeks ago, but it only has 1 network port so you would need to add in another network card in the PCI slot.

Hi, I have a ThinkPad Edge 520, type 1143-B5G with a clean disk and I need to install Windows XP on it, for legacy reasons. I have read about the Intel Rapid Store Technology driver being necessary, but this does not seem to apply to the 520, only to 220 and 420. The settings recommended are not available on the 520 (nor is the driver itself), and the driver is listed as N/A for the 520 in the Lenovo list of drivers. But, I still get a BSOD error just as Windows is about to start from the installation DVD, after the DVD has loaded all the drivers it can think of. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Btw - would it be possible to install XP in a separate, primary partition alongside Windows 7, on a disk that already has Windows 7 on it? Or is a clean disk necessary for this? Kind regards,/EvA

Answer:Blue screen when trying to install Windows XP on Intel-based ThinkPad Edge 520

Hello and welcome,

What settings are you looking for?  It sounds like this is a problem with HD operating mode.  Does the E520 BIOS have an option to change the SATA mode to compatibility instead of AHCI?  You won't be able to install a "vanilla" version of XP without adding the appropriate AHCI driver or switching to compatibility mode.

What BIOS version do you have?  I see this rather cryptic reference in the 1.20 BIOS:

" [Problem fixes] Fix an issue of read/write data on SATA compatibility mode."

It is possible to dual-boot XP and '7, but the easiest way to do that is to install XP first, and then let the 7 installer set up the dual-boot configuration.  You would still have the AHCI vs compatibility (IDE) mode problem.

Ah, lookinng a little deeper, there is an AHCI driver for XP in the Lenovo driver matrix.  The readme includes instructions on how to install.

Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver for Windows
README for Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver for Windows

Maybe that will get you going.

Z.

I'm getting ready to upgrade several old Pentium4-based Dell desktops with the Intel 6700MUD motherboard and 4GB of RAM. Does anyone out there have any experience with Windows 8 and the Atom 6700 CPU? I know it won't be a speed demon, but it would be much better than an old P4-based box with 2GB of RAM and onboard graphics, for sure! I'm looking for a good "upgrade" solution for the people I know who have a 5-8 year old Dell that is running WinXP and they want to upgrade but $ is tight.

I built a system based on the Intel 6500 CPU a few weeks ago and it ran Windows 7 really well with 2GB of RAM. HD videos ran smoothly and the Intel HD audio was outstanding and I was quite impressed. Thanks in advance!

I have been experiencing audio dropouts on my Thinkpad T420 related to DPC spikes and have tracked the issue down to the driver for the 82579LM Network Controller. Please see the message below I posted in the Intel forum relating to the issue. http://communities.intel.com/thread/43498 Lenovo, please release an Ethernet (LAN) driver for the 82579LM in the T420 that is fully compatible with Windows 8 (or work with Intel on a solution to this problem). I noticed that you do not have a driver listed for Windows 8 on this site. This problem makes the T420 useless for creating/editing professional audio whilst the Ethernet Card is enabled in the system. It also causes issues which may affect other users as well, such as intermittent mouse freezes, video pausing, etc so it is important this is resolved. The exact model of my T420 for reference is 4236J29. Thanks.

I realise that web based can be accessed from any where and that there is good storage. If I moved to Web Based which is the best? Every one has their own preference I expect.May be the subject is as long as a piece of string or maybe there is a very simple answer.I will enjoy the debate and it may be of use to others,I hope so.gel

Answer:Web Based or ISP based which is best

Why not try an ISP which also has web based access? I use Waitrose mail and find it excellent - mail is scanned for virus and spam, pop3 acess is great and on occasion I can check mail via web when away.

Question: LAN Based IM

we are looking to implement a network based chat/im software that will allow better control than the current one we are using. We use PopMessenger (from LeadMind) currently. The problem is it allows anyone to chat with anyone else on the network. We want to be able to use one that allow susie to chat with her supervisor, but not her coworker. It will allow Jim to chat with his marketing groups, but not with the CSRs...You get the point. We want to stay away from the public IM's like AIM and the like. I have 1 MAC G4 connected to my LAN. The rest are about 120 PCs with 4 NT4 & 4 Novell 5.1 servers. The MAC connected fine. The problem is that 68% of my network packets are ARP (a MAC protocol). My network traffic has at least tripled with just 1 MAC on the network.

I am using a Fluke OneTouch hardware protocol analyzer to get these stats. Before the MAC was connected the network was running mostly 802.2 & 802.3 protocols. One other fact: the MAC is using Connectix to see the NT servers. I have not yet load MAC namespace on the Novell servers.

My goal is to run IP only with 802.2.How can I reduce/eliminate the ARP traffic?

Thanks in advance,

Can somebody explain to me what a LAN Based Application is? I've tried to google it but cannot find nothing. I would imagine its an application that only operates within a LAN, so i.e an office, so it wont be able to communicate to another office?

Thanks

Answer:LAN Based Application

It is an application that runs only on a LAN (Local Area Network) without internet access.

The LAN could be small, 3 - 4 clients; or large with over 500 clients in multiple buildings.
I have worked in both situations and used propriatary applications that ran on the LAN, but were not designed to be accessed from the internet.

Video Conferencing, Remote Access Control, Gaming Servers, all started as LAN applications.

This is the best info I could find and it isn't much.

It says my processor is x64 bit based , but I'm running x32 bit Windows 10. It's a dual core,so if I'm running x32 only a core will work,or what?

Answer:x64 based processor

All it means is that your processor is capable of handling 64-bit. On a 32 bit install both cores will work fine. Obviously, by running 32 bit Windows you are missing out on some of the inherent efficiencies of a 64-bit set up. In short don't worry.

As I have read in this forum and on the internet, for GUID, you need an EFI based computer.

How can I know that my ASUS G72 notebook is compatible with GUID?

Should I format my second hard drive as GUID?

All suggestions welcome.

Answer:How do I know if my Notebook is EFI based ot not?

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't support EFI (I think only high end Asus desktop MBs support EFI).

I came to this conclusion by the fact that the driver download section of the Asus website lists only BIOS updates and not EFI-BIOS updates or EFI updates.

Sorry.

Working on a Mac with OS X 10.8.5 (although since my AOL access is on their web interface, I could access with other machines)

I tend to access through Firefox, but I could also use a different browser if that would help.

Need to provide copies of thousands of my AOL emails due to being deposed as a witness in a business litigation case.

Question:

How can I most efficiently copy the 1000+ emails from the AOL web-based storage to something the legal types will be able to print and read?

I'd prefer not to give a 3rd party access to my email and I'd also prefer not to have to PDF print every email, especially since I've just been roped in as a witness.

So I was thinking... why not have custom DNS rules at the router level based on certain ports etc? Getting sick of changing it back and forward on each computer.

Question: Browser Based FPS

I found a game while browsing the internet today.
It's the only Futuristic Browser Based First Person Shooter game there is, it uses Shockwave, the graphics are not bad.
You can connect to online games by going to Settings and clicking Networking.
Game is in beta right now, new features/maps to come later but it can be fun to play with your friends.

Eh, I just thought it looked sorta cool so thought I would post it.

Answer:Browser Based FPS

Sounds like a great concept, but it worked about as well as I thought it would, "Internet Explorer has cause a fatal error and needs to close". And this is with a clean web browser.

I was wondering what is an IP address based off of, is it purely based off of your ISP?
Is it based off of the router that you use?
Is it assigned to your pc?

I recently switched from TWC to DSLextreme, I am using the same router as before, and of course the same PC.
So do I have a brand new IP address or is it the same as I had before?

Answer:What is an IP Address based off of?

External IP addresses (the one the Internet sees) is assigned to you by your ISP, and I'm sure it's based on location. If you move it would change. Switching ISP's will switch your IP, switching routers / modems / computers will not.
Internal IP addresses (within your network, generally 192.168.0.x) are probably assigned to whoever connects to the network first.. I don't know

I was interested to know if anyone knows of any web based sites or programs that allow u to use AIM without having to install the AIM software. I work in an office behind a proxy and cannot use the standard AIM because of that. I have been using MEEBO but the IT director for my company found out and blocked that site. Myself and this director dont get along do to my knowledge of computers is vastly more extensive than his so this is his way of feeling superior. If anyone knows any sites i can use please let me kno. i do think that he has put a filter on my account to block any sites that contain AIM in the address but im willing to try anything. Also, if anyone knows anything about "SURFGUARD", which is the program that they use to control internet usage at my company, that could be helpful that knowledge would also be appreciated. Thanks

Question: web based software

I apologise if this has already been posted but after hours of shifting through useless google results I now have a headache from repeatedly headbutting the desk...lol...

What i need is a HTML based solution that when i direct a pc to a specific INTERNAL web address (10.xxx.xxx.xxx) the system gets its hardware scanned (diagnostic check) and the results displayed in the browser

the company i work for intends to do this for various OS' from Windows through Linux including NetBSD

Any suggestions on this as not all the systems support Java (hence the HTML) and preferably an open-source solution....( company is tight fisted when it comes to paying for software....)

Many thanx in advance

Hello
I am running XP on a intel 1.8Ghz cpu 575 MB ram, I am the system administrator on this computer and other users are my family members. I have not gave anyone my password to avoid the problem we had with random downloads of programs over the net. Well it has happened with a program called Weatherbug and Wild Tangent. Everyone says that they did not do this and I did not install these, can some programs install without permission from administrator ?

Answer:xp and web based programs

WT is known to be bundled with online multiplayer games but WeatherBug I haven't heard of being part of some software. What have you installed prior to have noticed it?

Question: Irc Based Game

Ok here's the deal:

I play an rpg that uses an IRC based client, but because I have a network: Anyone else one the network who tries to logon, can't logon do to the sharing of one IP. I remember running into this problem in the past and found a program that allowed me to select certain programs to use a proxy, but only those selected programs, not everything on the computer. I cannot, however, find this program again... . I search all over C/NET for it but after an hour of searching (I know I know... im stuborn) I gave up.

Does anyone know of where I can find such a program?

EDIT: If you want the URL for this game (as proof of such), feel free to PM me. I didn't post it in here, as I didn't want to get in trouble for SPAM.

Thanks ahead of time,
WlkingMan

I have a really bad problem with a brand new SSD-based rig I bought from a fairly well-known guy on our Canadian buy/sell site, RFD. It is based on a Vertex 2 60 GB drive with the Sandforce controller. Here's the rest of the specs from Everest

Quadcore Intel Core i5 750, 2733 MHz
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3P (I'll find out if it's the Rev 2.0 shown here)
Vertex 2 SSD with Sandforce controller
4 GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 Eco 7-8-7-24
2 x ATI HD 5450 video cards

This could get long, so I apologize in advance.

This guy built me a rig a month back and when I got it, it immediately started showing me the BSOD. I told him and he took it back; he told me that he had to somehow tweak the RAM timings because he was trying a motherboard that wasn't strictly supposed to take the RAM he was using. This was a big shock to me as I never told him to save a few $$ by trying something like that. I told him before the build that stability was my #1 concern. So I get the new rig with the right mobo. No BSOD, but what immediately started happening is that the computer has these little 'mini hangs' where it just freezes up when I click on a GUI element or request a task. Never stays frozen, just hangs for 3-10 seconds. I see the little blue circle spinning. This can happen when closing a window, or when requesting some other task. It happens with multiple apps. It does not seem to me that it is happening only when I ask the SSD to access large amounts of data.

I asked the ... Read more

"Why settle for a basic build of your Firefox browser on Windows Operating Systems when you can have one that is specifically made for getting the most out of your system? Question: Hardware based Tor

This is pretty interesting, I think it would be a lot easier than having to setup Tor on your computer with that proxy crap and everything you need to do. It would be cool also if you could do something like select which port on the switch sends data over the tor network so when you want to use tor just move your Ethernet cable to that switch port or put a vlan on the tor network. Also at night or when you are away let your router/ internet connection be used as a tor relay.

What do you guys think?

http://www.technologyreview.com/web/26981/page1/

Answer:Hardware based Tor

If they released a package that I could install on my own router, I'd probably at least try it out. The downside is that everything routed through Tor is going to be slower, so I wouldn't want all traffic to use it by default. It'd be cool to have it limited to one port on a router (using OpenWrt or similar) so I could simply hook up both my NIC ports and just enable and disable as needed.

Part of the current problem with encryption and anonymity tools is that just having them makes you stand out. If they become a standard part of routers, you won't look like you're specifically trying to hide something (and maybe some clueless people will get some better privacy out of it too).

However, I'm still a little wary of acting as a Tor node. I understand the technical details, but I don't want to get arrested because I happened to pass along a few packets related to some pervert's kiddy porn. Tor adds more complexity to the picture, but the data still travels to and from your PC. If someone were able to get logs from each node along the way, they could theoretically link the traffic to the source. I don't want to be a link in the chain the first time they manage to track someone down.

Rare and long term favorite game Superfrog by Team 17 is available for PC only on DOS floppies. Can XP be configerd to run these?

Answer:Can XP run Dos based floppies?

Don't know about XP but I found getting DOS programs to run on Win98 a pretty hit-and-miss affair. It's been a while since I've done it, but I seem to remember the best way was to create an MS-DOS based floppy and copy my autoexec.bat and config.sys files to it, then boot from it. You can create a DOS boot disc from click hereMake sure config.sys has these lines in it (required to access higher and extended memory):DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYSDEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXEUnfortunately, I also remember having to fiddle around a lot (sound was often a prob) and in some cases give up. Wish you the best of luck though (I remember playing Superfrog on my Amiga, fab game!).

Question: Web based surveys

I am looking to set up a survey on our website, but am completely confused and uneducated as to which packeage to use. Can someone please help an ignoramus. PS I don't want to spend an enormous ammount, but need something that looks good and works

Answer:Web based surveys

does your web host support either CGI or PHP ?If they do, you can use any one of a great many freely available scripts. If they don't, processing the poll/survey submissions will be more difficult. If you want a poll, just like the PC Advisor poll, perhaps you could confirm this. Likewise, if you would prefer a more comprehensive survey in the form of a questionnaire, it would help to know.Poll scripts are not the same as a more complex form used for question and answer surveys.Try these to begin with:click hereclick hereBoth of the above require PHP with a MySQL database.click here this one requires PHP to run, but the poll does not need a MySQL database.click here has a small application called Survey Generator, again in PHP.Chipmunk Poll is click hereAplomb Poll is click here and is pretty impressive - PHP but no database required.Simple Poll is click hereFor a wide selection of CGI and PHP scripts you can try Hotscripts for a ton of alternatives:CGI: click herePHP: click hereThe direct links I've given above are all for Open Source solutions, so you won't have to get your wallet out.If your web server does not support CGI and/or PHP, there are third party poll/survey scripts that are hosted separately from your site but included on your pages, but I don't suggest any of them since all of them that I have seen are advertisement driven. Finally, if your web host supports FrontPage Server Extensions and you have FrontPage, you could always just design a form that does what you ... Question: MAC based VLANs

What is a quick and easy (and not too expensive) way to set up MAC based VLANs? I understand that Cisco's VMPS protocol is decomissioned and 802.1x authentication is the way to go.

I was hoping to use Windows Server 2008 R2 NPS to set up the MAC based VLANs, but I am willing to change software if need be. I also would like to use a Gigabit switch, not 10/100.

I would like to have three VLANs:
VLAN1 for servers
VLAN2 for workstations
VLAN3 for unknown machhines

Answer:MAC based VLANs

I think 802.1x would be the way to go for your desktops and unknown machines, I would statically set your servers on their own vlan and not mess with it. I think you can do it all with server 2008 nps and dot1x on a switch.

Hey guys, here at work we're looking for an ip-based kvm switch (8-port) that would allow multiple users in at once. This switch will be connected to all of our computers that we're working on (we're a computer repair shop) so that people from different places in the office can work on computers without having to take up their deskspace or office space. Also this would allow us to remote in from home and take over a computer real quick to do simple things like continuing windows updates or starting a new AV scan.

Does anyone here know of a device, and moreso does anyone have personal experiences with these devices that might sway my opinion? I'm looking to do this for <$1000 but i'm starting to realize that it might not be that cheap.

I've found the linkskey LKV-9208IP but their tech support said that only one video stream is allowed at a time. We could have multiple people watching but there was only one port we could control at a time.

Question: Web based storage.

Hey folks,I have a customer who's mailbox is frequently filling up because they need to receive multiple 10MB files regularly but also keep these files on the mail server for a couple of days so they can sync their laptop. They've got an allowance of 100Mb oer mailbox, but they frequently end up going over this. What I'm looking for is a web based service where files can be uploaded to an online storage system, but also where customers can log in and upload their files rather than send them via email.I've seen one at humyo.com, but was wondering if anyone used any other systems that do the same thing, and what they thought of it.Doesn't have to be free, just needs to work.Cheers.
