Preferred Solution: Dunno why my pc is slowwww

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: So SLOWWWW.....

My 3yo Dell Vostro1500 laptop is very slow on startup. It takes about 6 minutes from the time I turn it on until it is ready to use. I run Crap Cleaner and PCToolsSpydoctor regularly. I have removed obsolete software and finally did a system restore. I am getting where I want to be and now I am asking someone to look at my startup file and help me clean that up. I don't know enough about what should be there and what shouldn't. This computer will be used for email and internet only.
I will need to be advised on how to post that for you to see. TIA
Louise

I am running XP Pro but it seems that with every day my start up takes longer and it takes longer to open documents and attachments. How can I clean up and speed things up? I have quite a bit of free space on the hard drive, I run CCleaner, sophos antivirus, defrag, etc. I try to keep the system clean but am not sure if there is anything I can do to improve the performance. Any ideas?

Question: Slowwww XP

Hi Everyone!

Need some advice. I am cleaning up my aunt's machine. Her XP is behaving strangely. It is very slow to operate for awhile after booting up and then will gradually get faster and seems almost normal for awhile. Then it will slow to a crawl again. I click on something and have to wait sometime minutes for it to do anything. I did all the Windows maintenance, ran CCleaner and RevoUnistaller on some junk, took out the non-working AVG and replaced with Avira. I also got most of the windows updates on since her computer had been off the internet for over a year. Ran Malewarebytes and Spybot and found some adware and something that was a bypass to windows firewall; can't remember all.

So after all that cleaning and reorganizing the files it still goes back to the slow behavior. It is a bit better but not where it should be. It will also do a strange closing of the window. It will sort of scroll down from the top slowly. I have all the fancy stuff turned off for better performance so I think this is just a sign of its slow behavior. I don't know what else to do. I think there may be something in her start up that needs tweaked more and maybe there is something that runs in the background to slow it down on occasion. Maybe the windows automatic updates or even the Avira update or scan? I think the Avira may be running slower than it needs to also. She also has a separate backup drive named D. Maybe it is doing something? I need help to get this cleared u... Read more

We've had an incredibly slow computer. about 90 seconds to switch between users on Windows XP, 60-90 second delays to open programs like firefox & paint shop.

is this all norton internet security? I would like to remove it and use only windows firewall but read elsewhere this was a bad idea.

I've run both norton & housecall's virus scans: nothing
Full scan on Ad-Aware SE - nothing.
Ran clean up and deleted a bunch of temp files.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hello and Welcome to TSF!

Have HijackThis fix these entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0

Reboot your computer & post a new log so that I can verify it's clean

I'm not gonna tell you to remove Norton but I like you to take a look at the log you posted above. How many entries there are related to Symantec/Norton. Just imagine how your log would look if those entries aren't there. Do you think your computer's resources be less stressed if they are gone? You decide for yourself.

In the event that you should dump Norton, here are some free alternatives:

ANTIVIRUS AVG Anti-Virus
Avast Home Edition
BitDefender Free Edition v7

FIREWALLSygate Personal Firewall
Kerio Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm

Question: Running slowwww

My system started running slow recently and McAfee found a virus during it's scan. I also found a program on here that I didn't download (Frostwire). Not sure if one of my kids did it, but I removed the program. Hopefully you can help figure out what is going on.

My HP Laserjet 5L is taking forever to print.

When I print just two pages of text it is
taking forever to print and it hangs up,
not freezes, my computer.
I am running Windows 98.

I have replaced the printer driver, twice.

It acts like it is printing in the foreground, and not the background.

Can this setting be changed?

If so, how?

Thanks for any help!

Tom

Hi there...It's been awhile, and my computer is pretty much free of pop ups however I did find some trojans and adware that I removed in Step 6. But I am having problems because my computer is so slowwwwwwwww. After all the scans it still took over 5 minutes just to restart my computer. I have unistalled all unneccessary programs such as toolbars, screensavers, etc.

Can you review my logs and see if you can help?

Thank you,

A couple of months ago I use IE and started going to cbs.com to watch the free episodes and i was able to watch them with no problem at all (I have a verizon dsl connection). About two weeks ago, it worked but it took a very, very long time to load (I thought it was just my pc b/c it was older then dirt! still running windows ME) and i was getting a new one.

Well, the new one arrived and I set up my dsl connection to the computer and I went to connect to cbs.com to watch the episodes i had missed, figuring that it would work because it was a newer pc and a newer OS (Windows XP SP2), but it took twice as long to load as on the old pc! When it did finally load, I had sound but the picture just froze -it wouldn't move... at all.

My question is, can i fix this? is there something i can do/undo to make it faster? is it IE? is there something to download to make it work or is it that im just stuck because i have a really crappy connection?? and if thats the case how come it worked absoultley fine for a long while and just started not to work?

Please help I dont know what to do??!! Thanks!!

Answer:Help, Help Unbearably slowwww!

Its alot of sites, i cant say all of them cuz when i came on here it loaded pretty quickly, but cbs, yahoo and others are veryyy slow with the loading and if they load it freezes every 5 seconds for about 3 seconds (i calculated it )

Question: Slowwww Computer

Hi I was hoping someone could help please.

My computer is running at an all time slow. I believe it's because I have over 600,000 files on it.

Is there any way to find out which files on the computer are unused so that I can wipe them off to leave more space on the C Drive?

So far, I have tried to do this manually by going into 'Search All Files and Folders'.

As you can imagine, this is very time consuming!

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Slowwww Computer

You can download something like CCleaner and ask it to clean up your hard drive. Don't use the registry cleaning function of CCleaner (or any other registry cleaning utility for that matter). You can also right click on the drive letter in explorer, choose properties, then run disk cleanup.

Sounds like you got you some malware there. Do you know what kind of anti-virus/spyware/adware/etc. you got? You could also try Fire Fox(www.firefox.com) as it has a better pop up blocker then IE(im guessing thats what your using).

The problem now is that it takes several minutes for the computer to bootup. It used to take maybe a minute or so, but now it takes 5+ minutes!!! It does not appear that the hard drive is working during most of the bootup time.....

Any ideas to help improve bootup time????:4-dontkno

I have noticed in the last few months my computer has been a bit sluggish, well, very sluggish. Over the past few years i have installed my fair share of software and have stopped using quite a bit of it - so I am sure a lot of what is in my log is just wasting resources - even though I have uninstalled quite a bit of it. I am pretty sure I am virus/spyware free ( I use the current norton) and run adaware scanners from time to time. Any assistance would be appreciated! Below is the hijack this log. Also any suggestions of what to remove to make things run a bit "faster".

Cheers,

Jeff

Answer:Onboard NIC on Gigabyte ds3 965 is slowwww

I haven't noticed any problems with mine.

Try updating the drivers first.
If that doesn't help, try a cheap Intel server NIC from Ebay.

It's likely just the way traffic is on the network though.
I would fully expect the speeds to be all over the place on a school network.

Hi guys. I have a 2003 windows file server. And lately it has gotten INCREDIBLY slow. I defragged the drives and still it is utterly slow. How slow? It takes 12 minutes to copy a 1.6 gig file from one partition to the next!!! This is driving me crazy because it used to be so fast and by no means should be this slow on a Sempron 2400 processor and 1 gig of ddr400 RAM. Can any1 help me figure out the reason why it got so slow? Is it because the hard drive no has onle 16 gigs left free out of 200? By why should that affect its speed so greatly especially if I defragged? And I have more than one drive with much more free space and it is still just as slow! Help!

I was able to get rid of the "virus box" that superimposed on my desktop by using Zone Alarm antivirus, spybot, malware, and a registry cleaner.

The problem now is that it takes several minutes for the computer to bootup. It used to take maybe a minute or so, but now it takes 5+ minutes!!! It does not appear that the hard drive is working during most of the bootup time.....

Any ideas to help improve bootup time????

Just another tidbit of info..... I get a program a.exe always asking for permission to access the internet.....Not sure what it is for???? Thanks!

I mean you can't do anything on my computer without waiting forever. The internet is slow and so are all the applications and games on the computer. It's a 3 year old Compaq with a 2.80 GHz processor with 256 MB ram and it has 61.38 MB ram free. It has Windows XP.What's the problem?? I've ran Norton Antivirus and Ewido neither found any viruses or that sort of thing. Dh wants me to put in the shop but I don't think it's worth it. You can buy another PC just like it for $398.00. I don't see the point in sinking money into for a professional. What could be causing this?? Thanks

Answer:Everything on my computer is sooooo slowwww

Did that computer come with CDs containing the original software, including Windows, that was installed on the computer?  Have you ever formatted, i.e. erased, the hard drive and done a fresh installation of the original software, including Windows? Do you have any spyware removal tools installed, and are you using them?  Was the slowness a gradually worsening problem or did it happen rather sudden?  If a sudden change, what happened just before the slowdown?  Where are you getting the "61.38 MB ram free" info?  You mentioned games.  What games are you talking about?  Do you ever run Disk Cleanup?  Do you ever defragment the hard drive?

Hello CH Forums,I primarily use a nice fast computer, but my mom has an 8-year-old Celeron 667 HP Pavilion machine. Its specs are as follows:Celeron 667MHz (i think P2 based)256MB PC133 RAM30GB Hard Disk82810E graphics5MB internet connection over 10/100 LANCame with 64MB RAM and WinME, upgraded to 256/WinXP SP3It has suddenly become VERY slow since the last time I used it, especially in internet speed. The speed tests show the proper speed, but it takes forever to load a page that my home computer (Core 2, 2GB RAM, 8400 GS) can do very quickly. Is it hardware-related? Any ideas on what caused the sudden slowdown?

Answer:SLOWWWW Celeron 667 machine

Well, your kind of hitting yourself over the head with a 667MHz processor and Windows XP. Sure, it meets the minimum requirements, but, the word minimum is important. All you need to read a book is fingers for brail, but, wouldent you rather see the words with your eyes?(I've been working on metaphores lately)Anyways, one question about the specifications you listed:"5MB internet connection over 10/100 LAN"There is no such thing as a 5MB Internet Connection. Or were you talking about the download speed, measured over speedtest.net?And, now for full scaled troubleshooting:What antivirus, spyware, and adware scanning programs do you have? The number one cause of sudden system performance decrease is a virus. Or did this happen over time? You might consider cleaning out your temporary files, and the system registry using a program called Ccleaner, available for free at www.ccleaner.com It probably wont help an incredible amount alone though. While you are running that program, go to the Tools panel, and then "Startup"Disable (but, dont delete) any startup items which you do not use on that computer. Second, go to the Uninstall area. Remove what you do not use.

My HP Deskjet was printing fine (actually better quality than my new Epson Photo2000) until I did what I am about to describe. I purchased a Toshiba laptop and I created a home network so that I can print on the HP(basement) or Epson (upstairs office) from the laptop. So far everything is working fine EXCEPT the HP now takes about 4min to print 1 sheet of text which used to take less than 60 seconds. How it is acting is when it starts to print it does one pass and then pauses and then the next pass, pauses, in other words it is pausing after every pass. Anybody have an idea why?

I've read some of the things posted below in another post...but I have to say I'm soooo not smart when it comes to this...so I'm scared to try and interpret for my own use. I have 81 processes running and have no idea which ones I can disable and which ones to not. I'm always nervous about messing with that. But, am I right in thinking that disabling something in the MSCONFIG thing at startup won't affect the program??? Can you still get to it? It just won't start up automatically, right? So, could I hurt anything if I disabled alot?

So, how could I give you a list of all the processes running?

I'm also having a problem with the xp update. I'm always showing that I need to update, but when I do this one part always fails. Here is what it says.

Security Update for Microsoft.net framework, Version 1.1 Service KB928366 didn't update. I'm not sure why, but it won't ever update.

Also, in AOL I get an error message constantly which says this:

A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug.
Line: ?
Error: Object Expected

I have no idea what that means and what or how to debug. I have tried repeatedly to uninstall and reinstall AOL but it keeps happening. Does anyone know what that means.

In the meantime....helping me to figure out how to or which processes I can stop from starting at startup would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with anything....but my computer frequently "doe... Read more

Hello.

When did the problem begin?
Can you associate the onset of the problem to the addition or removal of hardware or software, to include an update to Windows or your antivirus program? Have you run a registry cleaner recently? I am NOT suggesting that you run a reg cleaner.

Which version of Windows are you running? If you are running Windows XP Pro, there is a tool built into XP Pro called tasklist. Which service pack is on your computer?

Does the runtime error occur when you are using Internet Explorer? If yes, which version of IE are you using?
Open IE.
Left click "help", across the top.
Left click "about IE"
If an "SP" [ service pack ] is noted, which SP?

If you are not running XP Pro, you can run Process Explorer.
You can read about it here.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

For the most part when I have seen this problem in the past it has been caused by a problem with Automatic Updates being enabled and not functioning properly.

If AU is running, reboot in Safe Mode and run services.msc and double click the entry for Automatic Updates and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot.

To boot to safe mode, tap the F8 key once a second, after your computer has re-started. Use the up / down arrows on your keyboard to highlight / select "safe mode". Press "enter" on your keyboard.
Log in. Acknowledge that your computer is running in safe mode.

If this resolves the problem let me... Read more

I can't seem to get it to defrag. I've run the updated norton antvirus and it says all is good. Ive run adaware and found alot of tracking cookies Now Deleted. Something is going on here and I don't know how to spot it and stop it Thanks for your Help

Answer:SLOWWW Start Slowwww running

Quote:

Windows XP Home
40GB hard drive
GeForce4 MX 420 graphics card with 64MB of DDR SDRAM

Even a computer with 256 RAm has no excuse to startup so slowly. With older computers I generally backup needed files and do a clean format. Doing various scans and troubleshooting take approximately the same amount of time. It's a really noobish answer on my part, and I apologize for it. But if every reboot will take you 30 minutes, you might as well do a clean install which will take some 45-90 minutes.

If its still slow after that you have isolated that it's likely a hardware issue.

Hi there,

Pardon me if I dont explain this as articulately as Id like, Im not very computer literate!

I am currently borrowing a family members computer - Acer Aspire 5535. About a few months back it froze and I had to reboot. Im pretty sure that its been since then, that everything is sooo slow. For example, I will be typing and the letters are delayed at printing out on the screen. Everything seems delayed. There are 2 lights consistently flashing at the top of the keyboard - one is the wireless connection light...constantly flashing. The other is a green light in the shape of a box...which im presuming is the processor light? Im not sure though. It clicks and flashes randomly..pretty much all the time though - as if the processor is doing some other workload.

The laptop is running Vista Basic...would it be a software problem or a problem with the laptop?? virus??
Also my internet connection has been incredibly, frustratingly slow.
It has Avast Anti Virus software.

Any help would be brilliant - im struggling here plus I have to give this laptop back pretty soon...!! THANKS

Answer:Slowwww computer,flashing lights

You've apparently had that Acer Aspire 5535 laptop for a number of months.

Since we have no way of knowing how you've used it and what you've downloaded/installed in it, there can be several reasons for the issues.

--------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.

Windows XP Home with AVG 8 Anti-Virus and Trend Micro Anti-Spyware.Computer was running slow so I thought it might be AOL eating up my hard drive, so I deleted AOL (or so I thought until I ran HJT). Then I did an online scan, Panda Security, and then I ran Spybot S&D and it found and corrected a couple things, but it could not get rid of Zango which it listed. Now I don't see Zango in the HJT log, but Spybot shows it. Hi I'd like to offer thanks in advance for those who volunteer their time to help us with our PC problems. I hope I have done everything exactly as you want it.

Since I downloaded the new version of IE, I seem to have some serious problems. I rarely download anything at all and I believe I am very careful about what I expose my computer to, but I have ended up with some serious problems it seems.

First of all, I use Avast Antivirus and update it every time I turn my computer on.

My firewall is the Webroot Desktop firewall.

My spyware program is Spybot Search and Destroy.

I have had some serious SLOW PC issues in the past few months. I have run every type of antivirus scan and spyware I can think of and it always comes up clean. I purchased Uniblue scanner to try and help this problem and it didn't help and now, I can't even open the program because it just freezes. I noticed that my browser is using up TONS of memory, up to 100% and then I have to restart my computer.

Now, in the past couple of days, I have had the red balloon popping up saying my "virus software is out of date and your computer might be at risk." When I clicked to check it out, my firewall attempted to block several programs, but I only was able to note 1 of the names which was, "Wscntfy.exe" Upon doing some research, I see that this may be a virus and that brought me to you.

I would really appreciate some help in getting my computer clean and running nicel... Read more

HI!

I sure hope someone can help me.....

A guru here, NeonFx, worked me through getting rid of a really nasty bug and now my machine has been proclaimed CLEAN! However, one of the really annoying side issues was that my printer was totally bogged down. I figured that getting rid of the virus would get my printer back.

It spools up, starts to print, and then nothing....takes over 15 minutes to print a half page of word doc.

I reinstalled the printer software and updated the drivers. It's still the same...no change.

Does anyone have any ideas???

THANKS so much in advance for any help you might offer...

OH, and I spent HOURS on the phone today with an HP tech from the Philippines. He basically redid what I did, and said I was running out of RAM. Not true...I've got nearly 50% of RAM available....

HELP!!

THANKS!!

Here is the computer specs:

Pentium 3 - 550mhz
512mb RAM
20GB 7200RPM HD
Rage Fury 32mb video card

Her computer is totaly clean, i removed everything from msconfig-startup, there is 25 processes running in the background. The Commit Charge is 198M/1247M, I really cannot figure out why it is so slow, if i double click on firefox to open the browser, 5 seconds later the browser shows up. Also if i try to play a video that i downloaded with Windows Media Center, it will play VERY slowly, and if i drag the bar to fast forward it, it will take over a minute to start playing to that point again. Any advice? I put the computer into Windows Classic mode and turned off all the flashy XP stuff, im really stumped, thanks.

Hi Experts:

Neighbor brought down his Compaq Presario 6010US machine complaining about running very slow, and trying to get rid of Spyware Nuker that NAV was complaining about. Machine has an AMD Athlon running at 1.4 gHz with 224 MB RAM. Tried Norton's removal method to no avail; Program Add/Remove couldn't find it. Installed Spybot S&D, did updates, ran it, removed everything bad it found. Did same thing with AdAware.

Downloaded HJT, put in a separate folder in My Documents, logfile is as follows:

Hi Guys,

I just cleaned Security Tool off a friends computer but the thing is going SLOWWWW! I'm wondering if there's still bad some stuff left on it. Unrelated(?) problem - this thing's been having network problems and when I went into the network diagnostics to look at a network log file, instead of a log file coming up, Dreamweaver CS3 popped up and said that the trial was expired and prompted for the software key.

its installing programmes, downloading films etc..it all starts ok, with good download speed but after a few minutes the buffer fills and stops downloading if the data size is larger than buffer capacity until what has already been downloaded has been written to the HARD DISC / C: DRIVE or what ever its called...this is the problem as a small 65mb update can take 6 hours to complete. have used recovery disc to take back to factory setting but this has not helped..taken 3 days to download and install microsoft updates. i use the term "buffer" lightly as im not even sure this exists.. until download and installations are complete the computer is unusable. also have noticed in "task manager" the memory usage goes from 30,000 (ish) to 250,000+ on iexplorer.exe then freezes

Answer:write to hard disc speed slowwww

Your computer may be infected with some sort of nasty. iexplorer is Internet Explorer. Try booting to Windows safe mode and running any malware utilities you have installed. If you don't have any then TRY booting to safe mode with networking and download Ccleaner slim and Malwarebytes. Get them at the links below. If you can't download them due to the slow speed of your computer then download them from another computer and transfer the programs to your computer with any available media like flash drive or CDR.http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/bu...http://www.malwarebytes.org/

anyway this is what happend i went to open a game it was called WolfTeam it loaded but did not pop up. so i restarted the pc and after that i started getting BSOD (blue screen of death). i went and disabled the auto restart after system error and got this msg after restarting with another bsod it said Win32k.sys so i googled it and from what i have read it says ram problem. so now i figured 1 more reboot wouldnt hurt it rebooted and got to the login screen but the resolution was all messed up i seen lots of diff colors and everything was BIG. so at that point i decided to take out a stick of ram i have 4 gigs of ram btw after taking out 1 stick it loaded good and let me login normal but then i got another bsod.. after that i read to take out the battery that is on the mobo to reset the memory or what have u after that when i turn on the pc the lights come on the hardrive kicks on everything works but now i cant get any video to the monitor.. i cant get into my pc to tell u all the specs but ill try to name off some.nvidea 8600 gt4 gigs of ram corshairgigabyte mobo320 gig hard drive seagate2 dual core intel processor500 wat power supplywindows xp props. and another thing i went into bios and i may have disabled the video card witch i dont know how i did.Thnx in advance any suggestion is appreciated...-Travis

Answer:Dunno what i did... =/

In fooling around in the BIOS any number of variables could have changed here.Remove all power sources.Remove the CMOS battery for 10 minutes.Turn on and off your power switch a few times with the above removed to discharge any resident charge.Replace the battery connect everything and re-boot.Did you say that you have 2 processors in that machine ? ?When posting specs it's helpful to include model #'s...

Question: wat? i dunno

Im really bad at this kind of stuff so hopefully someone can help.
All i know so far is that when i try to boot windows, it goes to the safe mode / last known good config screen. tried to load the last known good config and it didnt help. i was told that after a windows update was installed and computer was rebooted, it just wouldnt load windows. sorry for the lack of info, but i got nothin... im tempted to just reinstall windows.

anyone?

Answer:wat? i dunno

Hi Steve

Guessing it wont go into Safe Mode either and recycles back to same screen?

Could try a repair of windows and boot to OS CD.

Or as you say just bite bullet and go for clean install, but does the HD have data thats needed to be recovered first? if so I did a weird trick a while back, just one of those weird moments when a spark of genius jumps out and as I have Acronis True Image 2009 installed, and a rescuse CD created it booted to that and managed to be able to just Image the My Documents folders and other folders to portable HD, then formatted PC and installed Windows XP again, installed the 15day trial of Acronis 2009 (available from Majorgeeks) on that PC, plugged in the portable HD and managed to drill down into the Image and right click copy and pasted the folders to the desktop and then left the user to move them into the correct folders.

Question: dunno what to do

I'm at a crossroads here. On one hand I really want to have my computer built VERY soon as I only have 2 more parts to order, and on the other han dI really want WIn Vista since it will be the next step in innovation and be 64 bit, and be required by most games coming out in Jan and after (I think)

problem is that Vista doesn't some out till end of Jan, and I want this comp done by end of Dec. I was thinking about getting Win XP media center to maybe hold me over but I don't know. In a month I would just be shelling out another $200 for Vista so I would have wasted so much money. What should I do!!

Answer:dunno what to do

just get xp and use it, and don't get vista for a couple of years. i have yet to hear of any games that say they will be vista only. the only thing vista has over xp gaming wise id dx10, and the 1st vid card t support it just came out and is over 600usd. so unless you have the nvidia 8800, you won't even be seeing dx10 in use, even if you get a game that uses it (i don't believe any are out yet). after using vista rc1 for a while, i just went back to xp. for me vista didn't give enouph tweeking power over my system to get the most speed for my gaming. the os just simply doesn't allow for 100% user control over the os like xp is. vista is just too concerned about protecting you and its self.

Question: i dunno

This seems pretty easy but, this is what it does during installation.Should the spaces be removed along with the semi-colon or is this a normal config.Just seems a little odd to me..
C:\Perl\bin\perl.exe;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\;C:\Python25;C:\progra~1\common~1\gtk\2.0\bin; ;C:\RUBY\BIN

Answer:i dunno

What you have is a Windows rendition of $PATH which delineates the various directories that are searched to find a command to be executed.

Spaces are ok for file names and directory names on Windows systems. So, I would say leave them as is.

To demonstrate, you can put an executable with a unique name, e.g. hello, in any one of the directories - i.e. separated by the ';' character in $PATH, then position your command window to your $HOME directory, and give the command:
$ hello
where hello is the executable name of the hello world program that just prints out the words: Hello, world!

I would then move the hello executable back to your home directory.

Unless your installation triggered an error message regarding $PATH - it is nothing to worry about.

Well I ordered some RAM off ebay. PC3200 512 X 2. One stick is fine, but with the other one I get this. This is the second one the guy sent me and I think he sent the exact same one back thinking I wouldn't notice. I tried a different slot on the board too - same thing. I tried having only one stick in there and it was fine, but when I swapped sticks into the same slot - boom. Grrr...

Dell Dimension C521 with XP Home loaded. Some time ago I installed a Linksys 2.4 GHz Wireless G PCI adapter with speed booster onto the motherboard, set it up properly and it worked fine.
Now I wish to connect a wired modem (Clearwire) for internet access, but XP is not recognizing the modem at all, only the wireless adapter
I have checked the ethernet connection on the computer, it's OK
No matter how many times I run the XP connection wizard, the modem is just not found
Did I somehow erase the program or driver that would recognize any modem ?
How do I get it back?
Thanks in advance !

Answer:dunno what I did, please help!

You should go to the homepage for the modem, and download the latest drivers. It sounds like you do not have the drivers installed.

I have Windows XP and have Norton, which I update regularly; Ad-aware, which I set up regular scans; have checked for viruses which Norton says there are none, but my computer is incredibly slow. It takes at least 4 minutes for each page to load and at times freezes up entirely. I'm also getting pop-ups from porno sites and others. The computer sounds like it is racing while I have it on and at times when I restart, I return to a blank screen.

Have spent so much time and $ in trying to figure out the problem. This site was referred to me by a friend and hope that someone here can please help me.

Thank you ever so much

Answer:Slowwww Computer and Pop Ups {Moved from Hardware - Needs Qualified Assistance}

How much RAM do u hav in ur computer. If it is under I GB i recommend that you upgrade it, as for the pop ups it might be the case that ur Norton is getting old. Hav u also tried to clean ur computer or defragment the drive. Access this going on my computer right click on ur C drive, and disc cleanup

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

now Start killbox paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box

The file name will appear in the window and if the file exists it will appear in blue under that window then select standard file kill, press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and once the file deleted message comes up then repeat for each file in turn

Hey guys,

I've been having a bunch of problems with my computer. Windows "system defender" keeps trying to tell me that I have all kinds of problems other than the ones I know about, and google won't let me search for anything; it just sends me to a different popup. I don't have the money for an external hard drive right now, and I have a lot of music that I'd rather not lose. I have a windows cd and the recovery console, in case that helps. Thanks for any help, and thanks for taking the time to read this post.

These are the logs that I am supposed to attach, I believe...

Greetings people of the Sevenforums community.

My computer is pretty old. It's been here since like 2006(7).
The only thing that has been replaced so far is the GFX Card because it died and nothing more..

But for a very long time now, like 12-8-2013 it has been excessively BSOD'ing. With different error types and I'm really clueless about what to do..

I got a nice list of minidumps zipped into a folder.
(Note: I didn't use the sevenforums tool on the PC, because it crashes before I even get to windows)

I'll attach the .zip.. hope anyone can be of help.

With a friendly greet,
Rimikumo

Answer:PC gets different BSOD's.. Dunno how to fix

Rimikumo, upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Also, Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Stress test the CPU.

my pc crashes when playing games. initially i thought this was a lot of problems but after resitting all of the pc and removing a faulty stick of ram i am still crashing. i cant properly install the radeon 9250 drivers from the ATI site when i download them and i have re-dloaded them several times to make sure it wasnt the download that was corrupted. for this reason i have no catalyst control cente even tho my dload included it. the pc tends to crash when loading new areas and other load intensive actions. i play no games that need a top end or even mid range pc to operate properly. my hard drive has recently been improved - it was properly cleaned before installing. it may have been in storage for upto a year before i put it in my pc but it was stored properly (in a uv bag in a box in a store room with many others).

i dont know if the problem is purely down to my graphics not installing properly tho i wonder if this is because my pc isnt saving data correctly.

games i play: Guild Wars, Anarchy Online (more crashing in GW tho i dunno if that game has installed properly either)

pc specs: 2100+ athlon processor, 512mb RAM, radeon 9250 gfx card. MOBO that supports all 3. windows xp 32x operating system (copy)

if anyone has a clue where to help me start that would be brilliant

Answer:i dunno where to start

So have you tested the memory? If not I'd do it, or even do it again to make sure you don't have more memory problems: http://www.memtest.org/

Also inspect the capacitors on the motherboard, see here for what they look like: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=195

Also for the ATI drivers, you have to use version 6.5 or older, the latest no longer support the Radeon 9250 and older cards.

Ok i dont know very little about vid cards and am looking to upgrade my piece of crap geforce4 mx440. My comp specs are AMD XP 1700+ (buying a new processor long with vid card, probably XP 2800+), 1gb DDR, 400watt power, 8x AGP motherboard. I only want to spend 100-150 and have been told to buy the geforce4 FX5700 Ultra and that its the best card in that price range although the top end of that range. Is there any cheaper or better cards for that price?? Oh by the way i think i like the geforce over ATI been told the drivers are better so if its an ATI card it would have to be quite a bit better than the 5700 ultra.

Any input is appreciated =)

Answer:dunno what to buy ?? vid cards

hey i had the 440, well my dad did, we just upgraded to a pny geforce fx 5700 LE optima 128mb ddr agp, it hasn't failed yet and my dad got it for like 110, i think it's realy some thing like 130.

I have Windows XP Pro. upgraded from Windows Home. Its Medion MD40100 Notebook, Pentium 4. I reformated the Harddisk/copied everything on external Harddrive and upgraded to Windows XP Professional. Know my USB ports don't work, or do they?

I have a mouse and seperate keyboard attached through USB (i have 4 ports on the back of the laptop) and IF AND ONLY IF..they are connected on a reboot they work. If i unplug them after the setup is complete, they will not work again unless I shut off/ plug them in/ reboot. Then poof they work again. None of these ports seem to work after the start up.

My system will not boot with the external harddrive plugged in, and so thus will certainly not work after the start up. It doesn't turn on and doesn't appear in Device Manager or anywhere on the computer system. Windows XP does not even report: new hardware attached. Nothing.

any help or suggestions would be greatly apppreciated.

xx

Answer:i dunno what to do anymore!

I should also note: If I need to buy something, i will, I just really need access to the external Harddrive as it has all my backup information. Thanks again.

Hi chaps having a nightmare with pc at moment and looking for some ideas please.

To cut a long story short I was playin EQ2 and my pc went kaputt.

At first it would not boot up and kept changing the cpu size from 1500 to 2800.

Then I unplugged and replugged everything and 9/10 it would not boot up at all as in nothing would come up on monitor.

Eventually i had to call an engineer out who charged 20 quid for first hour 45 for 2nd fortunately he wasnt there for more than an hour.

He tested everything and was dumb founded. Sometimes it would boot up then freeze most of the time it would just reboot and then sometimes not even boot at all(using my pc as we speak).

He ultimately thought it was my memory so i slipped him 20 quid and went and bought some new memory. Stupidly guy behind the counter has given me pc 3200 ddr400 i swapped the memory round and it kept booting but restarting as i click on icon to log in(I meant to get pc 2700 ddr333).

My chip is amd athlon 2800
Win Xp Pro
400 W
ATI radeon 9800 xt pro
80 gb hd
On board ac97 sound cmedia

I have been reading on net that it might be my psu but i thought 400w should be enuf. I guess i could buy a larger model 550w maybe.

Or maybe its my mother board as sometimes it lets me boot up like it is now but it will probably reboot half way thru this message.

Also another note on booting up sometimes it read my memory as only having 140mb in or some other insane figure and freezes when it has a stick of 512mb in.

Answer:Pc Reboot/Or not at all dunno what to do plz elp:(

Check your fans. That 52 is kinda warm for the MB.(could be the sensors are crossed and the 52 is really the CPU) Make sure the fan is running in the power supply. That fan is the exhaust fan for the case. If it's not running, the power supply could be overheating and causing problems. A good cleaning with compressed air wouldn't hurt anything.

I'm not too much of a php buff (I don' know anyting) but I know it was working and for some reason now it's not. I was messing with some security settings and cleaning up my Inetpub\wwwroot folder and eventually I noticed my php page wasn't functioning anymore.

I'm running WinXP Pro, and just reinstalled IIS 5.1. I got the php binary from php.net and installed it (ver 4.3.7). I gave IUSR Read & Execute privileges to php.exe and php4ts.dll and IUSR Read privileges to sessiondata and uploadtemp directories, which is what the installer said I would probably have to do for all practical purposes.

The security settings on the wwwroot files all have IUSR access privileges.

The .php file in question uses some output generated into an .xml file by a BitTorrent client (Azureus). The first time I put all the chunks together it worked fine, the php script executed correctly, drew data from the xml file and displayed it neatly formatted the way it was supposed to. Now all I get is this...

CGI Error
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:

As little as I know, it seems obvious that the error is that no "HTTP headers" are being "returned".

I really don't know too much about php yet. I figure I'm not doing anything grossly complicated so the error must be pretty basic.

The php binary automatically puts in cgi.force_redirect = 0 into c:\windows\p... Read more

Please help!

Answer:Dunno if its a virus or what but I need help.

No this is more than likely not related to malware. I'm moving this to the Software Forum.

Hi, starting from yesterday night I've been getting these hits from my Kerio Firewall where a bunch of nowheres try to connect to my "Task Scheduler Engine" and the application involved on my PC is c:/Programs/WINNT/system32/mstask.exe
I've scanned the file using Norton AntiVirus but it was not identified as a virus. I tried to quarantine it but even after the quarantine there's still hits from my Kerio Firewall.
Also, at the same time I've found a Download.Trojan virus in my PC and I've deleted it. I am not sure if there is any connection between the Trojan virus and mstask.exe.
As I am a total idiot in computers, can someone tell me if this is a virus and what should I do with it. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Answer:I dunno if this is a virus

Hi innewton, mstask is a windows scheduler, not sure why it it coming up as a virus, I included a link to info on it.

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/mstask/

Also you might try a different firewall, I use sygate it's free and very good, heres a link.
