Erratic & Slow

Question: Erratic & Slow

Once again, performance is flat and activity is erratic. BitDefender, RegistryMechanic and Spybot S&D only find cookies and lost reg entries. etc.- no threats at all really. I have done almost everything in the forum re "non-malware stuff" and created my logs. I have lots of startups but my family would kill me in my sleep if I took them from the desktop and hid them.

Preferred Solution: Erratic & Slow

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have "Lenovo B450" for about 12 months.  Recently connecting 2 external 2T hard drives via USB.When I transfer files between them, using a sync program or other programs - transfer speed is very erratic.  Sometimes will run at 18+MByte per second, then next transfer (did not shut down program) will quickly slow to less than 2MB/s?  Performance is random?I am running XP SP3 Professional. The same setup (and OS) with my desktop PC gets consistently fast (18MB/s) USB transfers between the drives?Latest lenovo drivers installed.  It seems to me a BIOS problem - please test this on your B450 - Lenovo, please test. Any solutions?I have tried all solutions for slow usb noted on web.thanks Ray

Answer:B450 USB SPEED SLOW OR ERRATIC - SOMETIMES SLOW SOMETIMES FAST?

SOLVED !  or rather a workaround was suggested by LENOVO TECH SUPPORT - a brilliant idea - Run in SAFE MODE, do the file transfers as per normal - I found the speed was consistently faster at about 25MB/s using the same sync program. It would seem some process running in normal mode is interfering with USB file transfer speeds.  Could be antivirus checking files on the fly or something else - weird **bleep** huh - Anyhoo, I will be doing big file transfers in safe mode in future.  Thanks Lenovo support! cheers,Ray

OK,
I'm not a novice, but late last week got a new challenge. Have been using McAfee, recently went to Comcast (ISP) versions which are free, and keep DAT's updated, and run Lavasoft and Spybot about 1ce per week.

Daughter, who doesn't have the best net habits, I'll admit, complained of getting knocked off the net, and couldn't get back in. I tried a few things, but system was bogged down to a crawl. Literally - even shutting down - would try to shut down, and 10 minutes later, still not shut down. Boot-ups changed from being about 3-4 minutes to 5-6 minutes, if successful at all. Tried to run McAfee for a scan, and it would lock. Ditto with Lavasoft, but not Spybot. Spybot reported about 30 tracking cookies, which is not unusual, but cleaned them no issue, nothing worse.

Ran HJT, found SpamBlockerUtility, and removed with HJT, but still lots of problems -
Flashlight icon lockup when going into MyComputer
McAfee lockups
Intermittent ability to get to net at all
Extreme slowness to do anything
All without seeing a lot of HD LED flashing
Task manager Performance tab shows low CPU usage - 4-7% mostly, nothing unusual for mem usage.

Tried some online scans in safe mode, and when I could in normal mode - Kaspersky, NAV, and AVG - show no threats except a few tracking cookies. Downloaded AVG, and have finally run that and McAfee in normal mode, with no virus' noted.

Tried to remove HP All-In-One (7210) software, somewhat successfull, but still r... Read more

Answer:Erratic, and SLOW - help

Hopefully, bumping is not a baddie on this forum. I'd appreciate your help in reviewing the HJT log and my situation.
Thanks,

Question: Slow And Erratic

Running Windows 10 with all updates. I use PCMatic for protection and Windows firewall. PC has gotten slower and occasionally freezes. Reboot usually works.
Don't know if it is associated with malware but a large number of folders (462 to be exact) were created in root directory. The folders are empty but the system will not allow me to delete them. They have a "D" attribute.
Attached are the log files requested by MajorGeeks.

Answer:Slow And Erratic

Rerun RogueKiller and have it remove all it found. Do the same wih ADWcleaner.

Reboot and rescan with both and attach the new log. You don't have malware, just a lot of junkware.

Hello

My Wifes laptop has been slow and unresponsive for a couple of weeks now. AVG started saying it had found a virus and had quarantined it. But ever since then everything has been slow and stops responding. I have tried all my anti virus and malware programs and everything says there is nothing.

Please can you see if there is anything they have missed.

Thanks

I have Verizon DSL, with a Westell Versalink 327w modem and an XP computer. The DSL connection worked fine for about a year (though at about 3/4 of the speed it was supposed to have). But after a recent storm, the DSL has had an erratic connection, with terribly slow download speeds (32 KBits/sec). Upload speeds are fine (400+ KBits/sec). Also, i have noted that the connection is always reliable and fast (1.5 MBits/sec) when the phone is connected, whether merely off the hook or actually talking to someone.
The line to the phone has the proper filter on it, and the modem line does not. The phone is wireless, but since my computer is wired to the modem, this should not cause a problem. To further rule this out, I disabled the wireless reciever on my modem and removed its antenna. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:slow, erratic DSL, normal when phone is in use

Ask your provider or phone company to test your phone lines. If they test OK tell them you want a new modem. Have them check your speed as well since you are not getting what you have been paying for.

I have a 3.2 GHz IBM with 1GB of ram running Windows XP SP3 and not too long ago it recently started acting strange. First thing I noticed was the system boot up became much slower, at the Windows splash screen where the blue progression bar slides along the screen and it says Windows XP, that screen now takes a good couple of minutes to load.

I also noticed when opening programs they open much slower and seems like it overtaxes the CPU when loading them up, like it spikes really high to just load a simple program such as CCleaner.

The other issue I've noticed and probably the most noticeable is when I'm downloading a file from either torrent, IE (the latest version), or Firefox the CPU becomes very erratic it will spike from 3-6% usage all the way up to 60-90% every couple of seconds and this results in a very choppy computing experience, videos will skip, programs drag along the screen at a constant choppyness.

I've taken a screen shot of Task Manager and shows how erratic the CPU usage spikes are,

As you can see there was only 20 processes running, two programs were open, system idle processes were at about 98%. When I was looking at the lists of tasks running during this file was downloading neither of the programs or any of the other system services were running over 10% CPU.

Also, my computer has been checked and is clean of any viruses, malware, trojans, spyware, the start up list is completely empty and I have managed to get my start up proces... Read more

It can read anything from 60kps to 600kps and changes for no apparent reason.I don't believe its the isp (AOL) as my laptop runs consistently fast (600kps is fast for my house) but I need to use xp on the pc for certain online progs.(laptop has vista)I've checked for anti spy and virus and all appears clean. Any suggestions? The pc does not sound like its under any heavy processing when the speeds are low either.

After the computer is started and has run for a while the keyboard starts beeping and random characters can be inserted into anything typed. Also auto select is locked as if using sticky keys with the shift key. Using the arrow keys automatically selects all text. The keyboard is OK as when it is used on another machine it works fine.

I have posted DDS and GMER logs. Ark.txt is attached.

While browsing, speed is terribly slow. Occassionally the loading speed will return to normal for 30 seconds to a minute or so, then it slows again. It doesn't matter what site I am viewing -- even Google is slow. I'm not being redirected, and I'm not getting popups. I did notice that I have PING.EXE as a running process. I've had my IP out to check my DSL lines and he said everything is okay. Please help.

I have tried to download DDS but upon opening get a message

I request help in trying to get the computer cleaned up.. Thank you

Answer:Erratic computer, slow and unable to download DDS

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.     HijackThis is not the preferred initial scanning tool in this forum. With today's malware, a more comprehensive set of logs is required to determine the presence of malware.    Scan with FRST in normal modePlease download Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool to you... I also am having difficulty in using IM and Chat functions on various sites as the text is extremely slow to appear on the screen in response to my typing. I have tried downloading the newest and updated versions of Adobe Flash Player but when I attempt to run or execute the downloaded update, it gets deleted.

Not sure if I have malware/spyware or software/hardware issues? I also need some assistance in uploading the Attach.txt.file as an attachment here. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!

I am in a vacation rental house that uses a Comcast TG862 combo modem/router. We have several IOS and droid devices, they are all fine, with Ookla routinely showing download speeds of 20 to 30 mbps for them.

On my Surface Pro 2, however, at best I get 10 to 15 mbps. This would be fine, but often (75% of the time), the wifi effectively freezes up, and Ookla shows perhaps .1 or .2 mbps. It does not drop the connection, just gets very, very slow. I can detect no pattern.

I have re-booted repeatedly. I have done a hard reset of the router. Re-boots do not always fix the problem. Sometimes the speed will magically go from .2 to 12mbps without a re-boot and without any system changes.
I have googled and googled, but none of the "fixes" has any affect (turn off Location, etc etc). I have logged into the router and changed from DHCP to assigned IP. No change. I have called Comcast, and a very earnest person checked the router from their end. They report no problems and they offer no suggestions regarding Win 10 specifically. (No surprise.)

The Surface network adapter is a marvell avastar 350n. The driver version is 14.69.24054.176 (mwlu97w8x64.sys). Windows Updater tells me this is the most recent version. I have nonetheless Uninstalled the device and had Windows re-install it on re-boot. I have visited the Marvell site, but it is very unfriendly and I cannot determine what THEY think the most recent version is. I have downloaded the mos... Read more

Answer:Win10 Wifi slow and erratic, IOS and Droid devices OK

Welcome to the TenForums @mwf7501

While you've changed how addresses are handed out I'm keying in on your comment that it just changes from working and back to not working. It possible you are dealing with interference and there are lots of sources of that in our world. One thing I would initially suggest is a quick analysis of what is around you. Interesting that droid and IOS devices are fine but they likely have different adapters so may be handling this better.

Wifi Analyzer - AndroidWifi Analyzer - Android Apps on Google Play
Inssider Free - WindowsinSSIDer 3.1.2.1 Download - TechSpot

The goal is to find a clear channel. If that is not possible pick a channel that overlaps networks that are farther away. As well the 2.4Ghz network gets better distance and the 5Ghz gets better speed. I didn't look up the comcast router, it may not be dual band which means you are likely on 2.4.

I had installed a trial version of Nero and the install got stuck. I sued regseeker to rid myself of all entries that mtched the term NERO and found that there were several that were not deleteable at all (permissions were not allowed to be set too). apart from Nero i discovered two other entries that were not deletable (setgting permissions and taking ownership does not help). Furthere there is a slow boot time and erratic behaviour in general that makes me strongly suspect rootkits and other malware. I have scanned with my trial version of Bitdefender with an updated database and also used the July version of the malicious removal tool from MS.

Working with a friend on a windows 98 SE computer.

It was on when I got there. the screen was froze and Ctrl Alt Delete woulld close it so I had to turn it off at the tower. Turned it back on and it is loading super slow. It hung up two times and mouse wouldnot move Ctrl Alt delete wouldnot work so I turned off at tower again and started it and went to safe mode and it worked it safe mode. I cleaned the temp filesm cookiesm history in safe mode and took a HJT log. Ran spybot, adware without updates, (but arre updated every month) I got it updated later. Anyway, ran spybot and adware in safe mode and they are clean.

When the machine first started freezing in normal mode it would not show up anything in the tray where all the things that startup should be such as his McAfee and other things. After I was in safe mode I click on the McAfee and it popped up then in the tray. So when I was done in safemode and went back and tried normal mode it then loaded everything in the tray and it all started working. However, the mouse was very erratic would not move right away when I moved it and just erratic. Everything was very slow.I then got on the internet and updated spybot, adware, spyblaster and again spybot and adware are clean. He also has IE-Spyad, Script defender, and spywareguard.

I guess a fatal exception error came up on him a few days ago and of course he didn't write it down. It came up again and I wrote it down in a hurry so I think this is right. it is

I think I share a problem with many running older pcs (mine is Dell 4550 2002) – the computer is still fine for all my usual tasks – UNLESS I PROTECT IT. It seems that any current protection carries a huge performance loss. I added a new dh a couple of months ago and did a clean install of XP SP2 - Dell sent me a disk.
My computer has gotten slower and slower. I think the culprit is ZoneAlarm Suite 7.0.470.000 but I’d like to rule out viruses, spyware, etc. Having had very intractable problems before, I’d like to play it safe. If my computer is ok, is there any effective antispyware and antimalware that won’t screw things up?
At the outset, my security was ZA wireless router, and ZoneAlarm Suite 7.0.462.000 – often irritatingly slow, but bearable.
ZA updated to 7.0.470.000. The immediate effect was very sluggish system, and the e-mail stopped (com-cast outlook express). Comcast chat rep did very thorough job (surprise) said there appeared to be e-mail scanning that was preventing email.
Reset ZA wireless router to minimum security, antivirus off, antispam off, software updates off, remote access off.
Ran 7.0.462.000 antivirus, antispyware, nothing found. Set not to restart, ZA true vector process continued to run, and when I tried to disable it I received statement that I was not authorized to do so. So I did a complete uninstall of ZA 7.0.462.000 complete – whose computer is this anyway?
Ran Secunia Software Inspector and did a few upgrades.
Installed Kaspersky 7.0 r... Read more

Hi,

I would very much appreciate an expert's help here. I believe I have some adware/malware on my computer that may be causing it to boot slow (hangs on the windows flag in XP for 4 minutes at boot up) and then load slow with erratic mouse/cursor movements. Everything seems functional but just slow and erratic. Sound and video is also erratic with skipping and freezing. Below, I have included the file I got from HijackThis. Please assist if you can, thank you.

Hello, seminoviceboy
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. Not sure exactly why, but first my mouse started behaving erratically, then my computer slowed down and the memory usage of the following increased quite a bit according to my Windows task manager: Mozilla Firefox, Avast anti-virus, AshWebSv.exe, svchost.exe, and explorer.exe.
I also cannot install Microsoft Office 2003 service pack 3 even though it is downloaded to my computer ("installation failed" message appears).

Question: Erratic fan

I've just purchased a nearly new ProBook 430 G3. Everything is working fine except the fan is behaving erratically. While idle the fan is off as expected, during intensive tasks the fan runs at full speed, again as expected. However while browsing the web, using Visual Studio etc the fan starts running but doesn't keep a constant speed. It constantly speeds up and slows down, its subtle  but noticeable. I've used lots of laptops over the years and never seen this behaviour before. All the latest drivers have been installed along with the most recent BIOS. Anyone know if all 430's do this or is mine faulty? Thanks

Question: Low, erratic FPS

Hi guys. Have posted here previously about hardware - i was building a new PC. I'm having some problems running WoW on it though. I have posted on the WoW support forums, but as is the standard process, they've asked me for my driver info and then ignored me. So I've come here!

Yesterday evening, I started having some strange stuttering slowdown. Every 2-5 seconds, I'll get a bit of slowdown for half a second, then I'm back running smooth again.

Previously, Warcraft would run at 60 FPS at (almost) all times, in busy cities, in raids, whatever. But after a few hours of playing yesterday, I suddenly started experiencing these low framerate spikes. It runs smooth for a few seconds, then it stutters, and then smooth, then a stutter.

I have tried:
Running with 0 addons (in-game custom UI stuff),
Fullscreen and windowed,
Lowest graphics settings,
Spyware scan (which brought up quite a lot actually - but it's clean now),
Virus scan,
Defrag (fairly new drive, so i'm at 0% fragmented, it says),
Allowing the launcher to fully patch (it now says up to date - there's a sort of streaming patch process),
Closing all processes and switching off fancy Win7 themes (my tray has my graphics utility, sound utility, mobo utility, and Microsoft's AV - nothing else).
Updating graphics drivers.

It's particularly noticeable if I try and run around somewhere quite complex, like the cities or forests. Then it's a pretty constant 10-20... Read more

Question: Erratic DVD

I am having problems with DVD/Video. I edit files into a full movie - approximately 5 mins long. I drop in an audio file to use as background music and everything proceeds as it should. I then get the message that everything has saved as it should. When I try to play it back it starts ok and then starts to "stutter" and drop out. The same thing happens when you burn a DVD and play it on an external DVD player?
Anyone out there know why ?????

Answer:Erratic DVD

what brand and model of DVD Burner? and what media are you using?

Question: erratic laptop

Hello, please could someone look at the attached logs for me and see if they can identify a problem. my laptop is behaving erratically. I have read and worked through the 'run and read me first' instructions and attached the requested logs. I have attached the 'ComboFix' log to a reply to this thread, I hope that is OK.
About 1 month ago I downloaded and installed 'Webroot security'. It clogged the laptop up totally with a CPU of 100% constantly. I have since removed it and reinstalled AVG free, but ever since then it has been running as if infected. I tried to install McAfee but it would not install as it said I still had Webroot on. I have removed it with 'Revo Uninstaller' and have even downloaded and run the official Webroot uninstaller, but it still shows as being on the laptop. could this be the problem?
Also, my DVD player is not running correctly, the sound is 'tinny' and the picture 'jumpy'. This is the same whether I actually put a disc in the drive or play a recorded film from an external hard drive.

Answer:erratic laptop

Here is the 'ComboFix' log to go with this posting. Thank you very much for taking the time to look at these for me. Jan

Question: Erratic behavior

The last few days the computer has been very erratic. I'll try to explain what is happening but am not sure I will be able to adequately explain it.

First, and I don?t know this has anything to do with my problems, but every time I reboot the computer I get the following message or warning ? GarminLifetime.exe-.NET Framework Initialization error, and then goes on with other info. If I click OK it closes, so don?t know this has anything to do with the other problems I have been experiencing.

I burn DVDs all the time without any problems. A couple of days ago I was authoring a DVD and part way through the output received an error message stating the system was low on resources even though the only thing running was Outlook Express. There is 350 GB free on the hard drive and I have 4 GB of RAM. I rebooted the computer and didn?t start anything else, just the DVD authoring program however got the same error message.

Most of the time when I click on a link in an e-mail the IE window opens but it just sits there with the hour glass and the webpage never appears. If you try to close the window it won?t close. You have to use task manager to end the task. When you try to open a new IE window sometimes it goes to the home page, other times it just seems to hang and again you can?t close the window without using task manager.

The system seems to bog down with only a few windows open when in the past I have had two or three times as many windows open.

When I ran GMER the first... Read more

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:... Read more

Question: erratic booting

Cyrix 200mmx with 32mb sdram, 3gb hard drive by tri gem. When I boot it does these things: no screen at all. put in a video card and now it boots to 256 kb or 128 kb or 32 mb. sometimes it boots all the way to the program mostly is boots to the video note the memory and then each time it shows less until it doesn't even show the info completely for the mother board just the first group of numbers not all of them.
I tried exchanging the memory and it still does this I even exchanged the cpu and it still does this errantic boot.

Any suggestions???

Thanks in advance.

Answer:erratic booting

Reseated sdram and it boots but have another question. I didn't do this mind you a this is a friends computer. Can loading Win98 full version over win 95 cause the system to not recognize the video card and make the cpu irratic?

If so can I get win98 off without losing the rest of the drivers and info on the system?

Question: Erratic Connection

Hi Folks - have been having some odd things happening recently on my HP Compaq nx7010. This is a standard build Windows XP machine using Microsoft Office, and we use IE6 to connect.

First thing: My dial-up internet connection is playing up. Doesn't seem to be an issue with my ISP, and their helplines are drawing a blank. I will dial-up and hear the modem conencting, get the connection confirmed and then it immediately disconnects again. This happens repeatedly - now this has happened before and can be due to the ISP, but recently it has been doing more: it will repeatedly disconnect, and then repeatedly re-connect in the background without making any modem dialling noises or without us requesting a connect - even after we have manually disconnected. Eventyually we will get a permanent connection, but then this can disconnect us any time during our session. Any ideas? I have checked to see that there are no rogue autodiallers.

Second thing: Occassionally on boot up the screen resolution and desktop theme is reduced to a very low pixellated version. The only way to fix this is to restart. This has only started happening.

Appreciate any help or sugegstions!

Answer:Erratic Connection

Hi,

This could very well be due (first problem first) to a port sharing problem. Here is what I would do if it were mine:

Why not give the following a try:

1) Download the newest and latest drivers from the modem manufacturer’s website. (I know, you have a disk, but download the newest and best anyhow.

2) Enter Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and DELETE any references to any modem.

3) Shut down and physically remove the modem and then put the modem back in PCI slot #3 (Third slot down from the AGP slot)

4) Boot up and enter the BIOS setup menu.

5) In the BIOS setup menu find the PnP area. If you are running WinXP, then DISABLE Pnp….however, if you are using Win98, then make sure it is ENABLED.

6) Save and Exit

7) Boot back up and when the computer finds your modem, then load the drivers that have been downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. It may tell you that the latest and best are already installed, but install them anyway. (for example, WinXP only has v.90 drivers and not the most recent v.92 that are needed for best operation) If it says they are not digitally signed, then load them anyway. This is a long story, but I can assure you it is a money issue and a rip off from Microsoft in my opinion.

This should get you going!

Question: Fan speed erratic

Hi;
My system, which I built 4-1/2 yrs ago is an Asus P5AD2E Premium with Antec True Power 550 watt PSU, and I have a 120mm fan in the rear that is now starting to act up.
It is connected to the "fan only" connector coming from the PSU, and min speed can be varied by a front panel control.

Everything has been working perfectly until a couple months ago when the fan speed started varying up and down erratically.
The only time it does not vary is if I have the fp pot turned fully CW so it runs at max speed all times.
Normally, the fan is supposed to vary speed depending on need for cooling, and this feature has worked very well until now.

I found that if I turn up the +12V supply from about 12.1 to 12.3V, the fan slows down. But it still runs erratically.

I am going to open up the PSU to see if I can find any loose connections.

Any ideas?

Thanks

FW

Answer:Fan speed erratic

Remove it from the fan controller and run it directly from the motherboard or power supply. If it still runs erratic, replace it

could anyone please help me, i am fairly new to computing and my cd-rw/dvd combo went beserk over the weekend, i was doing some work with it, i loaded a blank cd into my pc and halfway through the task a notice came onto the screen saying cannot finish writing, and then the machine sounded as though it was spinning very fast, it was making a racket rather like a fan turning at great speed for about fifteen seconds and then it just stopped, and now it is completely dead, i was hoping someone may be able to give me a clue as to what may be at fault, before that it was working perfectly, thanks, tommy.

Answer:where to find help for erratic cd-rw

is this a new PC, if so, back to the supplier and let them fix the CDRWIf its not new then reinstal the driver, before checking if the drive is still considered functioning as far as you can see from properties in my computer on the system tab and dont confuse the driver with the CD writing software. Perhaps check on the manufacturers site for up to date drivers first.

Everything was fine until this morning. When I fired up my laptop running XP, my mouse was behaving badly. It now double clicks on its own, refuses to move windows, and fails to drag anything including text and files. I am a massive halo fanatic and my itch to play will soon turn into a full blown psychotic episode if I can't fix it soon!! So for my comps sake (not to mention the unfortunate people around me) please help!

So far I have ran every antivirus and spyware check possible. I have even uninstalled the mouse driver to no avail. Im running XP Pro so it automatically reinstalled it for me on reboot. I have also tried scolding my naughty little mouse. I even raised my hand in an attempt to horrify it but it merely sat there unflinching! Well anyways I tried the mouse on my sisters comp and it works fine. The only thing that I did out of the ordinary last night was defrag my system before I went to bed! I cant think of any other solutions so anything anyone might suggest could help! Thank you!

I have been using and UPS with my PC without problem for more than 20 years, but for the last few months it has caused eratic behaviour. My current UPS is an APC Back-UPS RS 1500. This gives me a good 22 minutes breathing space when the power is cut according to the countdown on the LED screen. However, as soon as the alarm goes and the UPS seamlessly provides power from its charged battery, the control of my mouse becomes increasingly more erratic and it takes several minutes and much patience, not only to place the cursor over relevant parts of the screen, but also to wait for those places to become active before I can save work and turn off. Only with a reboot does the problem disappear. The UPS is not totally useless, as I can save work, but its usefulness is only a fraction of what it should be. I'm assuming this is hardware related, but if anyone thinks my thread should be moved elsewhere, feel free. Any ideas?

Question: Scrollbar erratic

I am having a problem with my scrollbar jumping up and down, whether it's on the web or any program I have running. If there is a scroll bar in the window, it will jump up and down or jump all the way to the bottom the the screen and stay there. This will also happen even if I take my hand off the mouse and not touch it for a while. The mouse I am using is what came with the computer. It is not a wireless mouse. It seems that the scroll wheel will seldom work when the screen is jumping. I purchased Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare to try and take care of the problem. I thought it could be a virus or spyware causing this issue but the program has found nothing. I tried sevel freeware programs on the net to detect a virus or spyware also and they found nothing. I purchased adaware also since i heard good things about it, but it has found nothing. I am using a Dimension 2400 with celeron processor and the windows is XP. I tried looking on the web for threads relating to this topic but have found none. Can someone help!?

I have read several threads with this problem, cursor or pointer moving around screen erratically and difficult to manoevre accurately, and have tried the suggested remedies to my ability: but my problem is slightly different in that it happens on my laptop, but only when using it on a flat surface, never when it is on my lap.
I use the touch pad, not a USB mouse.
Any suggestions, or have I got a laptop that takes it's title too seriously !

Answer:Erratic cursor

Has the Touch pad ever been Scrached or pressed Heavily? This can Damdge the Sensor Causing the Curso to Jump on the Screen,

Do you have a USB Mouse you could use that may be lying around? If so try that if it works fine then it would be your Touch Pad being your Issue

Question: Erratic Performace

i've been playing baldur's gate and i'm getting erratic performance during gameplay. was on the phone with game tech support and they say there is something wrong with my system's resources. here are the symptoms:

erratic game speed - sometimes very fast but mostly too slow. i have a 32 meg 3D vid card, 550 MHz PIII, 128 Meg RAM, 40 Speed CD-ROM. according to game support there should be no slow down at all while running the game on my machine.

i run nothing in background, have a defragged disk, have the latest drivers, and have no probs with Direct X. i have noticed lots of hard drive access during gameplay. there also appears to be a large amount of HDD access in the Win 98 environment.

also, there were some sound files from the game that were located in some bad clusters. i used norton disk doctor to move the files to good clusters. moving those files to good clusters did not help.

Choppy Play from the CD-ROM and Skipping Sound - when the game accesses the CD-ROM to play a movie i mostly get choppy vid and the sound skips alot when the game first accesses the disk. but sometimes it is fast and there are no skips.

the game teases me when it runs fast. it is so much more enjoyable to play. but mostly it runs slow and it is becoming frustrating. my guess is that i'm having a HDD problem or sound card problem, any thoughts are appreciated.

Question: Erratic Mouse Pad?

Every now and then my mouse pad begins clicking erratically when just trying to move the mouse elsewhere on the screen.Perhaps it's due to sweaty fingers or what not, but I've tried changing the mouse's pressure sensitivity and found it to not really solve the problem. To diagnose the problem, I've simply just shut down the laptop and turned it back on and wiped off my fingers. However, why is this a problem to begin with? Is it because oils from the skin are left on the pad and causing deviations in pressure when I have my finger on it?Thanks

Sometimes it will select all the text and I have trouble deselecting it. Sometimes if I hold the mouse button down for a while it will work. Occasionally (seldom) it will work fine for a moment. I tried to search this issue but could not find anything that seems to help. I cleaned and checked the mouse. I ran the Microsoft Office Diagnostics which did not change anything. I haven't made any recent changes that would account for the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm using a Lenovo 3000 N100 with Vista-32 OS pre-installed. When typing any text in any program, my cursor will randomly reposition itself.  Is there a fix to this?  I have even reinstalled the OS with MS OEM DVD.  I still have the same problem.Mark

Answer:Keyboard Erratic

I had the same problem with my G530, and it was maddening. Turned out that I was accidentally brushing the touchpad with the palm of my hand at times while typing, and this would cause the cursor to jump to a different location. (even though I could swear I wasn't hitting the touchpad when it happened, I must have been) There is a setting in the touchpad configuration to disable the "tap to click" feature while typing. And you can also set the delay interval for when it reactivates after you quit typing. This solved my jumping cursor problem. Try it on yours.

It's difficult to explain what's going on with my PC right now. I'm fairly sure it's not a virus - I ran the Norton NPE file and it turned up nothing (it's supposed to be a heavy rootkit scanner) and I have AVG Internet Security 2011 - it also shows up nothing on scans, and it generally works pretty solidly for me.

I've got problems with disconnections. It will continue to read 'Connected' yet I cannot browse or use Yahoo! Instant Messenger or Skype, I can't do anything on it. This happens frequently, every ten to thirty minutes, quicker if I'm doing more online, less often if I'm not browsing at all. It's almost like I'm exceeding a bandwidth limitation, but there IS no bandwidth limitation at all, and I'm not going anywhere near any limit that would be set - I'm not doing much at all.

This is extremely frustrating, as I often play games online with my friends and it happens in the middle of that.

I've tried resetting the router. No help. This isn't happening with any other PCs in the house so it's not a service provider problem, and I switched from an onboard Ethernet card to a wireless USB setup - my signal strength reads max, and there were no problems with the internet cable going into the router. None of this is clearing it up. As I typed this out, I literally disconnected with no warning and for no reason. I haven't done anything new, I haven't been browsing any stra... Read more

Question: Erratic mouse

Hi.

I've got a mouse problem that has developed independently on two different computers, one Win98, the other Win ME.

The mouse works OK when it is moved slowly, but behaves erratically when moved quickly. For example, if the pointer is in the middle of the screen and the mouse is moved quickly to the left, then the pointer will typically move crazily about in the middle third of the screen and usually end up on the right.

Drivers and mice have both been changed to no effect. The ME computer now has an optical mouse, so it can't be a mechanical problem.

The Win98 mouse is on COM1, the ME mouse is a PS/2.

I've fiddled about endlessly with the port settings on the Win98, changed ports etc. No effect whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Regards,
psmyth

Answer:Erratic mouse

I am not sure this will help, but it is something to look at.

You didn't specify the mouse brand, but usually most come with software to adjust the mouse.

What you want to do is look for the mouse speed and acceleration. Be sure the speed is set to medium...and that acceleration is set to low. It sounds like the acceleration may be set too fast, causing the mouse to act erratically

Hope that is helpful

Question: erratic mouse

erratic mouse I have an H-P desktop running W 7 (64) which is a little over a year old. As of today my Microsoft optical mouse has gone all flaky on me. It moves jerkily and if I happen to get it to a place I want it and click, nothing happens. I can't get the Start menu to open. I have
1. changed the batteries
2. changed the USB port
3. unplugged it and installed a wired mouse
4. rebooted
5. hit the reset button on the optical receiver

and nothing has changed. I have read all the previous questions and answers on this topic and I don't know where to go from here. It doesn't seem to me that a new mouse is the answer or the wired mouse should have worked. If it is a software problem, I don't know how to get to anything. I surely would appreciate some help on this.

In the passed, I could associate a file with the correct program to run it. Now I can't.Can anyone suggest a remedy?Windsor

Answer:Erratic fie associations

I think you may have to provide a bit more information Windsor for sometime to answer this one - ie: what has happened that you can no longer do this - also operating system would help.A couple of things might have happened. The most likely answer is that you once had a program on your computer that was able to work with this file extension, and now the program is gone. You might have uninstalled the program or deleted it in some other way. Or you could have installed a new program on your computer that supports this file type. New programs often make themselves the default viewer for certain file types. If you later uninstalled the newer program, you might still have a program on your computer that will open the file type, but it is no longer associated with those files because of the newer program that was once installed. To fix this problem, just right-click the file that you want to open, and choose the appropriate program from the Open With choices.

Question: Erratic mouse

Hi
Ive just joined this forum and would welcome some help please.
My mouse jumps all over the screen, opens up programmes and drop down boxes on the desktop without me even touchin it, sometimes the pointer disappears totally. I can sometimes cure this by ctrl/alt/del and then just close the task mgr box, other times I have to reboot. I'm positive this is not a hardware problem, but a virus type thing. I've actually changed the mouse and no difference. I did have the same problem some time ago, got help from another forum, had to run various programmes, including Hijack, posted logs etc and after deleting files as advised, the problem was solved. Unfortunately the person who helped is no longer on that forum, and nobody else seems able to help. I run XP, semperon 3000, 1 gig ram.
Any help gratefully accepted !!!!

Mouse pad jumps and moves erractically and often magnifies screen or reduces it to a small size such that neither screen can be read.  Curror jumps all over the place when typing.   Customer Support Techs have attempted to fix - I forgot trouble ticket number - by me allowing them access to my computer but in both instances the two different techs were unable to make a permanent fix.   The mouse pad is still extremely sensitive and cursor  jumps erractically around the screen.  The mouse pad is so useless that a wireless or USB mouse must be plugged in.     In my 50 plus years of computer purchase/use of both Mac and PCs, I would not recommend this model computer to anyone considering a laptop.  Bummer.

Hey guys,

Ive recently encountered a strange problem on my laptop, but what it is i cant describe properly. I start up my computer, and ill find things like my mouse going on right click uncontrollably and my desktop icons and toolbar is frozen. This sort of stops after i exit from windows live messenger 9. But afterwards my mouse seems to spring into a life of its own, uncontrollably flashing with the right click option.

All this happened after i 'blue screen of death'ed once and received a virus link from one of my msn contacts which i DID NOT open.

Malwarebytes scan and AVG 8.5 showed no infections. Im not going to attempt ComboFix just yet

Please help, thanks in advance

Question: Erratic CUP Usage

Hello,

My problem began a while back, let me explain. (Note: This is a Sony VAIO Laptop I will be referring to)

First I only noticed it in movie files, where they would become choppy and lag after watching them for awhile. Then I looked in my Windows Task Manager.

For some reason, alot of different programs are starting to take alot of CPU. Normally the movie player of choice will just keep slowly rising in CPU usage until it hits 100% and freezes, but I have had other strange things happen.

For instance, my Pop-Up Stopper Companion would rise from a 04% CPU usage to a 30% CPU usage all while watching a movie file.

And these are files on my computer that I have downloaded as well as DVD's.

At this point I am beggining to believe that it is a memory leak or some other type of problem with the CPU and how its being dished out to all of my programs, because this does not affect just movie files (For some reason Audio happens to play just fine).

But it happens the same when I try to run games on this computer.

I have tried a number of things to fix this already, and I will list some of them.

1. I have run just about every virus and spyware program known to man. I own Spysweeper and I have ran Spybot, Ad-aware, RegSeeker, Bazooka, the list goes on and on.
2. I have tried using different screen resolutions on the advice of a friend, but that didn't work either.
3. Ok, here's an interesting one. I have run RegSeeker to try and help with some Registry errors, ... Read more

I've been going nuts with the Elan driven touchpad since I got this machine in Dec 2014. I've trouble shot the problem down to the Elan software being slowed down/interrupted when trying to use the mouse. The diagnosis is repeatable. If something is running using the CPU moderately at normal priority and the Elan software is also running at normal priority the touchpad becomes totally erratic. If under the same cpu conditions I plug in a wireless usb moue no problems, hardware driven. If I bump the Elan software to a high priority and start a moderate cpu process the touchpad work fine. My question is - is the a way to make the touchpad a hardware driven device rather than Elan software driven.

Question: Erratic Behavior

Hi
ok i'm freaking out here

First I get the NTLDR is missing one most of my drives with 2 that say NTLDR is compressed and use boot disk
Before I attempt to reinstall Windows XP Home SP2

It gets to Windows prompt
I type Exit
It asks me about autochk.exe path
So I tell it the path in system32
It tells me it cannot find it but its there

I try another drive
I get Windows on
After a few minutes whatever internet windows i have on closes down and erratic behavior goes on with XP menu opening and LOG OFF menu
So I check task manager and I use like 3-4 different virus scanners and spyware scanners and nothing is found on any of them

Ive used memory boosters and trying to check my ram and used chkdsk

I have 5 drives I have NTLDR is missing with discs that are legal and mine

Reinstalled Windows after partitioning and formatting them as well
First of all I thought it was the windows updates or internet exploder updates
So the second reinstall i didnt update
The same thing happened

What else could it be and how can i clear this up?

Chkdsk thorough found some bad clusters on 2722 and fixed them
But that didnt eliminate my issue

Question: Erratic Laptop

Hello, could you please look at this for me. My laptop has become very erratic. I have been getting loads of adverts flashing up.

I downloaded a trial of what I think was Rogue Killer (it has the same logo) and it flashes up lots of messages in the bottom right corner of 'trojans' it has stopped from installing.

Whilst I was writing a text document in open office it came up with a warning. Everything started flashing (desktop, text document etc) then the screen went blue (no writing). I had to use 'control alt delete' to be able to close down but it was 'closing down' for about 15 mins so I had to close with the button.

This happened 3 times, so I worked through you Run and Read me first and your malware removal info.
The scans do not appear to have found any threats, but I would appreciate you looking at them for me.

I run Avast anti-virus. Also I run Advanced System care as a cleaner and 10bit malware fighter frequently.

TDSSKiller found no threats. I could not find a log in C: and I coud not copy and paste the report to send to you.

I have attached the logs

Thanks in advance, Jan

Answer:Erratic Laptop

Your logs are all clean. What do you mean by "I have been getting loads of adverts flashing up"? Are you referring to double underlined keywords that when your mouse moves over them you see an advertisement? If so, this is normal and not malware.

Question: Erratic Cursor

Got an older model DV 4150 HP Laptop with 2 gb of ram and runnning Windows 7 Ultimate. I seem to be having a "wild" cursor problem. I can be typing along and pause and lots of times the cursor will have moved to somewhere else in the sentence or page that I am typing on. Just like now, before this sentence, the cursor moved to about four different places in the first three sentences when I would pause. This is irritating at best. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

PoppyJ

Answer:Erratic Cursor

Are you sure your hand is not touching the touchpad while you are typing? This happens a lot to me if I'm not careful to keep my hands off the touchpad as best I can while typing. If your palm brushes across it, the touchpad mistakes that as input and starts to move the cursor to wherever it thinks you are pointing it to. Your touchpad may have a "Palm Check" setting to help minimize this from happening.

Does this solve your problem, PoppyJ?

Question: Erratic behaviour

Hello guys. I think I might have a problem. About 2 days ago I started getting errors about different Windows services not working (can't remember exactly which, but if needed I can dig up the logs). After I got these, I also got a series of BSOD's. I managed to restore my laptop to a previous checkpoint via System Restore, as Windows downloaded some updates and I thought these were the cause. I also did a check disk and a defragmention of my drives, together with a Spybot and NOD32 scan. Cleaned what I found, and I thought that was that. After all of that, I started getting warnings from NOD32 of attacks, coming in from the C:\Windows\TEMP folder, all blocked. They were about 25 threats in the last 24 hours or so, and before all of this happened, I never got any.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question: Erratic Keyboard

A friend is having trouble with his laptop running XP with a wireless broadband connection. When he types on the keyboard random letters/numbers/symbols appear. He has AVG 8.0, Windows Defender and Adaware running. He uses Windows firewall and has seen this come up with 'firewall turned off' when loading although he is not aware of having done anything that may have affected this setting. He has reverted to a previous system restore point and the keyboard works correctly for a while but then reverts to the same behaviour.
No viruses have been found, he also ran WindowsOne Live Care and nothing showed up.
Any help would be welcome as I have run out of ideas.
Also, as he lives some distance away from me I need to use Remote Assistance to help him. Would using Remote Assistance be likely to have any impacton my system if he does have a virus?

Answer:Erratic Keyboard

I think Live One Care has its own firewall, so thats why the Windows XP firewall is turned off.

Doing Remote Assistance will not have any imapct on your system, viruses cannot be spread over a remote assistance session.

Question: keyboard erratic

What is causing my keyboard or my cursor, to suddenly jump making typing extremely difficult
I thought it might be my mouse, so I unplugged, and although I was able to type several sentences without issue, when I returned to my email, it started again.
I noticed this first when typing in FaceBook, but attributed it to my "satellite internet connection" so wasn't as concerned until I tried typing a document when I was offline.
I cannot determine if any on key is the issue. Seems to be very irregular. Oh yeah, and then it sometimes jumps as if I have hit the tab key or the enter key. The problem became much worse as I am typing this

Best test would be to try a different keyboard and mouse. Then you will know for sure if it's a keyboard/mouse issue or a PC issue.

Hello FoSho,

This is my first post to a reply on a forum so take it easy on me :)

From what I have researched from Microsoft Support and Help site that there have been issues with optical mouses not functioning properly in Windows Vista. You can refer to the Microsoft support article at this url:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932653/en-us

They do have a hotfix for it, but you have to submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the hotfix at:

Hope this helps!

S0metimes when I boot up it will not complete it. The sequence at those times is as follows, On switching, on the Bios window appears, then a white progress bar runs acros the bottom of the screen, Then the Microsoft window with the Microsoft logo appears with a horizontal bar in which 3 blue little squares run across from left to right but when it plays up the 3 blue squares are stationary, unlike normally when they run across about 6 times. After that it will go no further and the welcome screen does not appear. I then have to turn the PC off via the on/off button on the front of PC. On switching on again I am offered the option of starting normally or using last known configuration. Using either of those options will boot it up fully ok. The problem does not happen every time i bootup. My OS is XPhome sp2. Can anyone suggest what might be causing this please.

Answer:Erratic bootup sometimes.

Hi, I don't know what might be causing it, but in circumstances like that, it does no harm to run CCleaner click here when you have it up and running normally.

Question: Erratic Mouse!!!

For two days now, the Trust Optical Wireless Mouse that I use has been playing up (I have an Acer Aspire 5105 laptop, and generally use this mouse rather than the built-in touchpad). This 'misbehaviour' seems to be limited to those occasions when I'm using Windows components, such as regedit, msconfig etc, and have to choose options from drop-down menus; I scroll down, release the mouse and the menu returns to the beginning, as if there were a spring there. Same thing when I use the bottom scroll bar; if I drag the bar towards the right with the mouse, when I let go of the mouse, the scroll bar returns to the left. I end up having to use the keyboard arrows or the touchpad to choose menu options. The only real change to my pc, apart from the usual Microsoft updates, has been the removal of Comodo Firewall and AVG antispy ware.Florio

Answer:Erratic Mouse!!!

You presumably have a driver disk for the mouse - try loading it again - it should only take a few moments to do.
