Preferred Solution: Its cleaning time.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey everyone!

A friend of mine gave me an HP Pavilion dv1411se notebook and I would like to give the fan and heatsink a thorough cleaning, although I'm pretty positive the fan doesn't work at all. However, I've seen pictures online of how much dust can build up on the heatsink and I'd like to get that taken care of. Ultimately, I would like to replace the fan and possibly the heatsink altogether, but for now, giving both a proper cleaning will give me peace of mind. My objective is to pull the thing apart in order so do so.

This will be my first time doing anything like this and my reason for wanting to is the fact that computer repair shops are just too damn expensive for my budget, plus I'd really just like to know how.

Does anyone have any good words of advice before I tear into my laptop? I've read somewhere that static electricity can "fry the system." Is this true? I'm planning on getting rid of the dust from the heatsink with a vacuum, but I've also read that this isn't always a safe practice either.

I'm gonna use the HP Maintenance and Service guide to assist me:

If anyone else has any other tips or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Hello, I'm sitting here with my Sony Vaio model PCG-61112L juuuust about cracked open and waiting to be cleaned. I've noticed lately that fps during games has been dipping, and i'll get gpu driver errors whe browsing the web, causing my display to refresh (always recovers). This is why i am cleaning it out now.

I've got my RAM chips, battery, and what i think is the hard drive removed, and all screws out. When i tried opening the bottom case, i then noticed that there is a small black cable attached to the case. I have no idea what this is, but it is attached to a ribbon thing next to where the RAM chips were labelled as "To MB." Sounds like it has something to do with the motherboard, but all i want to do is disconnect it or something so i can get the bottom casing off so i can clean this thing. Any help on this would be fantastic.

Do you have a service manual for this laptop? My advice, since you don't sound very knowledgeable or experienced, is to stop what you're doing. Your problems about FPS & GPU driver errors are most likely due to other issues than the computer needing cleaning.

I have completed the Major attitude removal guide. I have attached the 2 reports for someone to provide feedback on what is wrong with my desktop PC. My infection occurred when I upgraded from the internet security suite Kaspersky 6 to version 7 which is still active now. Please can a qualified person interprete the reports that I have attached?

Answer:Cleaning an infected Time PC desktop

Attached is another log file that was too big to attach in my original post.

The desktop PC still appears to be infected because the machine still operates slowly and prompts PID error messages from Kaspersky 7. Any help I can get is appreciated!

My friend has a laptop that he has had for about 5 years now. He has stopped using it because it is slow and often freezing. It is running windoes 7 i think. I said I would take it and try to sort it out for him as I know you guys would be able to help me. I don't think he ever did malware/virus scans. Probably everything that would need doing is going to have to be done. He has probably never done any updates to anything. I don't really know where to start so was hoping someone could talk me through it.

Answer:Cleaning up and removing malware from an old laptop for the first time

1/ Is there any Data that requires to be backed up first - That he needs ?.....DO THAT FIRST !
If not - i would restore it to the day he got / if it has a Factory Restore Partition.
2/ If you choose the Factory Restore option , goto the Manufactures site of the Laptop / enter the Model etc / follow the Instructions to Restore.
After that is done / you then need to do all Windows Updates / Antivirus / and Install your Programs.
3/ If you need to just clean it up / or the restore partition is not available , and just remove any Malware / Viruses etc....
Then you will need to post the Make / Model and wait for assistance in the removal of such and post various Logs as instructed.

Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

I'm having a temperature problem and I don't have any experience in cleaning laptops and understanding when and how to do it. As far as I know, the problem is that my laptop is getting quite hot and I'm using it a lot, gaming included.
I'm going to post a couple of screenshots and a photo.

This is the temperature when I just surf the internet.

This is the temperature when I'm gaming, but sometimes it gets much hotter.

This is my fan outlet, as you can see, it has accumulated a lot of dust.
I hope that someone could help and maybe explain what does affect the computer's temperatures and how to clean this particular fan outlet. Oh, and maybe the fan itself has a lot of dust? I don't know. I have only removed the cover once, trying to clean the same fan outlet that you see (then it had much less dust in), but I couldn't figure out how, because it has some kind of cloth-like material glued to the case and I didn't wan't to rip it off, so I left it uncleaned.
The last bit of information I want to provide in this post is that I bought this laptop on January of 2015, and I did have a period, when I was using it on my bed (without any cooling pad or hard surface), but then I stopped doing that and bought a cooling pad. Which was too small for me and after a couple of months usage I gave it away, now I'm left without a cooling pad, but ... Read more

After a routine Trend Micro Internet Security scan it discovered I had Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive (not C:\). So I made visible 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' in order to delete those files. But when I clicked on the System Restore directory on the affected drive I got an Access Denied warning. Even after making the drive readable I got the same warning and cannot open the directory to delete the bad files. So I did a System Restore flush then rebooted to Safe Mode to proceed with the "Malware Cleaning Guide" cleaning. The first scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware showed no vulnerabilities. Then the online scan from Panda showed the same Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive. But then the log file from the Panda scan would not save to my computer. Am currently running the online Kapersky scan and online Trend Micro Housecall then will continue with rest of "Malware Cleaning Guide". But wanted to give this early heads-up.

Answer:In the middle of Malware Cleaning Guide cleaning = a few things have popped up.

Could someone please help me clean up what has become a very slow computer? I must have too many programmes automatically starting up and running because it now takes an age to boot up and when it finally does windows take an age to load and the internet seems to run very slowly. I don't think it is a memory issue because I have over 50GB of free space. Another issue is that Internet explorer often crashes and closes all open windows with an error message.

I am posting a Hijackthis log so you can see what's running. I only really use the internet, itunes and manage photos etc. so I think there is a lot of superfluous activity which I'd love to get rid of...

Hello, folks.

I'd just like to say that I have been coming here for quite some time and never even needed to make a single post because you had all the answers waiting for me, and I should thank you all a great deal for that. One of the finest communities on the web, and I'm proud to say I've linked at least a couple of dozen people to these boards, if not more. They all have recieved great help as well.

This time, however, I don't think I am capable of helping myself, and I think I require the assistance of a pro. I myself, while having been able to help myself before, really have very little knowledge of this stuff. Now, I did almost everything in the READ ME AND RUN ME FIRST thread, a few things I was not able to do. I think I know which malware problems I have, I am just unsure of how to rid myself of them, and I'd rather not take a chance and delete something important.

Anyway, I have attached my HiJack This log file, hopefully someone can find the time to help me as this site has many many times before.

Thanks, all the best...

Answer:Long time reader, first time poster...Big time problem...

I need the logs from the two online scans listed in the READ ME.

6: Online Virus And Trojan Scanning

Please run the below two online scanning tools and make sure you save and attach the logs later to any request for help that you post. From step 5 you should already be in safe mode but you will need to reconnect your cable now and possibly reboot and choose Safe Mode with Networking Support. If you cannot connect in safe mode for any reason (like dial-up users), run the online scanners in normal boot mode. You will need to use Internet Explorer to run these online scans.

Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on Click here to view the report

When the window comes up with the report. Click File, Save As.... and then change the Save as type to Text File (*.txt)

Change the file name to something short like bdscan1.txt

Then save it to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it to upload here as an attachment.

Post the bdscan1.txt file as an ATTACHMENT.

Panda ActiveScan It will only fix certain viruses and trojans. Most items found will not be fixed. When it finishes the scan click on See Report . Then in the next window click Save Report. The default report name is Activescan.txt. Just save it where you can find it so you can attach to your message when you begin a thread with a request for help.

It's critical that my PC keeps the exact time as I record TV shows on it so just a few seconds off one way or the other will make me miss the start or end of my shows.

I found it was drifting off too much between syncs so I found a program that lets me set it to sync daily, however it seems like most of the time it gets the time completely wrong, often as much as 30-90 seconds off. I did notice that when syncing manually in the time settings it normally gets the right time each time, so I don't know why the scheduled syncs get the wrong time.

I did try several of the time servers with the same results.

Is there just no way to get the Windows time sync to work properly and if not are there free third party programs that can do it reliably?

If I am in the wrong forum, please let me know.

About a month after I started using it, the Say the Time clock program I bought stopped launching the management menu when I right click the date/time field in the task tray (notification area).

Therefore, I can't use or edit the program.

Neither the touchpad nor the cordless mouse works.

Other than this problem, my computer works great. Every single item that's meant to be right clicked works for me.

Is there a way I can generate a log to show the software manufacturer (Provenio) that it's their problem and not mine?

I am a novice user but I can follow instructions.

However, I don't want to put my computer at risk if I make an entry error.

Or is it obvious that it's a software problem?

I've been using computers for 18 years and I've never had this problem until I bought this software and used it for about a month.

I just wanted a conclusive way of putting the ball back in the manufacturer's court.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I am using Nokia Lumia 720. The results are the best so far.
However today I started facing following issue.
It is giving me the message 'Slide down to power off' automatically in regular intervals without clicking any button.
When I slide down it should shut down and stay shut down till I start again, however it is restarting automatically and again flashing the same message.
The middle button is not working for me.
Can anyone please advice me what can be the solution for this ?

Answer:Nokia Lumia 720 Automatically giving message time to time 'Slide down to power off'

Seems like the power button is stuck. If your phone is still under warranty, send it for repair. If not, try removing the battery cover. then turn on the phone without the cover installed.

I've been using Webroot Anti-virus with Spy Sweeper but am looking to change as viruses have recently crippled my computer.

I am interested in using Avast and malwarebytes. Can they both be used for real time protection or would they conflict with each other (and/or take up too much resources)? I am looking at getting the paid version of malwearebytes for real time protection.

Would running only one of these programs as real time protection sufficiently protect my computer from virusues, malware and spyware or would using only one leave me vulnerable?

Thanks for any insight here.

Answer:Is it a good idea to run Avast and malwarebytes (real time protection) at the same time?

I see you have an open log topic here: finish up there with m0le before making any changes to your system not called for by m0le.But to answer your question, I highly recommend Avast. As for MBAM, I use the free version for on demand scans. Read this:The full version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware includes the ability to schedule updates and provides a real-time malware protection module that stops malicious processes before they can infect your computer. The Protection Module is not intrusive as it utilizes few system resources and should not conflict with other scanners or anti-virus programs. Keep in mind that Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like an anti-virus program so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. Those who purchase the full version receive a license key via email which includes a lifetime of free upgrades and support. For corporate and business customers, annual licenses are required. Also:Choosing a security toolkit with anti-virus, firewall and anti-malware programs is a matter of personal preference, your technical ability and experience, features offered, the amount of resources utilized, how it may affect system performance and what will work best for your system. Avast Anti-Virus prevents to send emails time to time, it occurred on a computer in my home network, and then on the other one. This Avast does not issue any messages, just emails remain in the Outbox and do not
appear in Sent items.
I know three ways to send emails in this situation. All this three ways are bad.
  1) Exclusion of scanning outgoing emails in the avast settings. This is bad, since sending emails goes unchecked.

  2) Exclusion of checking port 80 in the avast settings. I found it here -  There is explanation there, why it is bad.

  3) Restart of the computer, just after restarting outgoing emails go normally.
My post app is Live Mail 2012 (Build 16.4.3528.0331).
Can somebody explain this?

Dear All,

I hope you can help. Recently bought a new LaCie Wireless Space.
I am connected to it as a wi-fi router to get onto the internet.
However, my Time Machine software will not recognise it as a time capsule.
If I search for it in Airport Utility I a message that says "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport wireless device" etc etc. Yet I am currently connected to it on wi-fi.

Also, if I open Time Machine and "select backup disk" the following appears:
MyShare on "WirelessSpace (Time Machine)"
OpenShare on "WirelessSpace (Time Machine)"

But on selecting either of them the following message appears:
Time Machine can't access the backup disk "MyShare". (or "OpenShare")
The operation couldnt be completed. (OSStatus error 5.)

Finally, if I go into my Disk Utilities , there is no LaCie Wireless Space icon in the left column
However, there is a Wireless Sace (Time Machine) icon under the "Shared" column when I click on the computers hard drive icon on the desktop, BUT is states "Connection Failed"

I really have no idea where else to look and what else to do - other than contact LaCie - but they have not got back to me now for 3 days.

Any ideas????

Hello. Here is my issue short and sweet.

When I use ANY of the web based emails (Yahoo, Gmail, Comcast) on computer A, all of my emails are stamped an hour earlier than real time. By real time, I mean the clock on the computer AND the analog tick-tock clock on my kitchen wall. Both display the correct time accurately.

When I use ANY of the web based emails (Yahoo, Gmail, Comcast) on computer B (or C or D), all of my emails are stamped with real/correct time that matches my kitchen and computer. These computers ALSO reflect correct time.

With either computer, any file created or saved has a date and time stamp that is correct and reflects real time. Whether saved with a web app, a windows app or a cmd line app.

On all computers my time zone is set correctly. The "adjust for DST" box is checked. I also ran TZEDIT to confirm that my DST dates are correct.

One revelation (and I believe herein lies the key). If I look on computer A at the bottom of the "Date and Time Properties box: the current time zone says : Eastern *STANDARD* time. If I look at computers B, C or D. The "Date and Time Properties box says: current time zone: Eastern *DAYLIGHT* time. I can not find any way to change the "STANDARD" to "DAYLIGHT".

Now for the big question. How is this resolved?

Thank you.

PS. As mentioned in other posts, Adjusting the clock on computer A an hour ahead resolves the email issue, but now any file created or modified has the incorrec... Read more

Outlook Calendar shows start time in the monthly view but not the end time. I have right clicked on the calendar gone to Other Settings and checkmarked "Show End Time" but the end time still does not show. How do I make the start and end time show in the monthly view?

Answer:Outlook Calendar shows start time in the monthly view but not the end time.

You did not say what version of Outlook.

I am using Outlook 2007 and note the same as you - only the start time is displayed. I note on mine, if the end time was displayed, there would be little to no room for the Subject title so for me, I would rather have the appointment title instead of the end time. I think in a crowded field (as the monthly view can be) that is best for most people.

I don't see a fix for you. However, for a workaround, with Outlook being in "focus", if you hover over the appointment with your mouse, then the stop time is also displayed in a bubble.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

I open Event Viewer - "Admin View" to see what Errors/Warnings are there and in the column - Date and Time only the date is showing. Same goes for all the other views.
The "Time" element seems to have completely disappeared.

Any idea where its gone........... and more importantly, how to get it back?

Answer:Time stamp missing from Date and Time column - Event Viewer

Problem solved - but - I don't know why.

Solution:- I changed the Date/Time format from UK to US, opened Event Viewer and it was as it should be. Date & Time showing.
I then changed format back to UK, opened Event Viewer and , as above, the Time was back up.

If anybody knows what had happened I would be most interested.

Since then when I receive text messages it shows as being hours in front now when we have not got there. E.g. Hi there! I'm running windows xp home on an hp pavilion a400n, although I'm not sure that matters. I also use Firefox as my default browser.

I've downloaded a Google gadget, the calendar, to my desktop. I use the google calendar as my primary appointment book.

The problem is that the time in my calendar gadget and the time in my actual calendar aren't matching. I enter an appointment into my calendar, and then refresh my calendar gadget to see the updates, and the times on the gadget are on hour earlier than the actual calendar.

In trying to figure out what's happening, I also noticed that the timestamps on my messages, incoming and outgoing, are the same time frame off. When a message comes in or goes out, it immediately shows that it's an hour old.

I went in and made sure the operating system clock and the google gadget clock are on the same time and showing the same DST settings. But I'm still having the same problem.

Is there another clock setting I'm missing?

Help, please!

hey guys,

i just bought a new M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard to enjoy great sound in a foobar2000 + flac combination.

i've successfully installed the Vista 32bit drivers in compatibility mode and everything worked fine until then.

after starting to listen to music, i've experienced that from time to time (doesn't matter if i do something with the PC or just leave it there only playing music) the sound starts hanging (and it sounds like stuttering) for 1-3 seconds. then it comes back to normal...and a few minutes later it happens again. it's VERY annoying...

tried playing with WMP (wasn't happy about it) but the same happens.
tried vista 64bit drivers but couldn't install them. tried old Windows XP SP2 drivers, installed fine but no sound.

any1 got any ideas?
am i the only one who has this issue? did i buy a broken soundcard?

My Satellite P750 always shuts down on the first start up each day, but the 2nd start up works fine and no other problems..

I press the start up button and it runs for maybe 10-20 seconds then shuts down.. it does this both on battery or on mains power..

If I try to start again after this, it starts up fine.. sometimes it gives the option to boot in safe mode, or to run startup repair, but it always start up fine and runs normally..

I have tried start up repair when the option was given, and it makes no difference as the next day it does the same thing again..

Any advice much appreciated, and Im a little concerned that one day it wont start up second time..

The laptop is only about 6 months old, and otherwise runs great..

Recovery the notebook back to factory settings,.
Are you using the Win 8 or Win 7 system?

Usually the Win 7 notebooks supports an HDD recovery by pressing F8 -> Repair my Computer -> HDD recovery.

If the same problem will appear straight after the system has been recovered, I presume there is an hardware problem and an service technician should check the hardware parts.

One thing that was badly missing in Windows 8 Start Screen was a clock. But now, this shortfall too has been overcomed. Dave Smits has developed a clock application for Windows 8 Start Screen ? Clock Tile. The application makes your start screen complete with a tile that displays time in a live tile and supports x86 and x64 ARM processors. It however, does not include any options for customization. Another feature that is seen as a shortfall is that the date and time appear on a small pprtion of the large tile.
Apart from this, the app is good and ready for download from the Windows Store. Remember, when launched for the first time, Clock Tile asks for your permission to run in the background.

Hello everybody, Can help anyone to resolve my problem.I have an Thinkpad W520 (42823FG), BIOS 8BET60WW 1.4        When I disconect AC power and remove battery and connect again, I see this message on screen:"Real Time Clock Error - Check Date and Time settings, System CMOS Checksum badPress Esc to continue or F1 to enter Setup" Is this a system board problem or CMOS battery problem ? Thank you

Answer:Real Time Clock Error - Check Date and Time settings, System CMOS Checksum bad

Hello and welcome,
It's probably (hopefully) just the CMOS battery.  The easiest way to find out is to just replace that battery.

Here's an example of the battery.  I'm not recommending (or not) this vendor:

I have been experiencing bluee screens of death in the last 9 months.
Sometime , at 3-4 days it just happens , randomly.
I hope you guys can help me.
System specs :

Intel Quad Core 2.5 GHZ
OS : Windows 7 x64 Ultimate full

The age of the system is about 2 years except for 4 gb ram and the video card which have been added last year.
the OS was installed when I added the parts above , so it's 1 year old.
The BSOD happens even if I am in a game , or on desktop , or in messenger.

I am attaching the file with the dumps and the health report to this thread.

Thank you

Answer:Random BSOD , from time to time , during normal daily activity!

the desktop window manager is crashing.
Are you using any custom themes or shells?

I do notice one problem you have though. You have the old Asus utility driver.
This needs to be replaced as it's a known trouble maker in windows 7.
I happen to have an asus board myself.
the new copy of the file will be attached here.
Manually overwriting the old one will work (I did it on my own system)
however, you will need to boot Safe Mode and locate ASACPI.sys
by navigating to c:\windows\system32\drivers
and overwrite the copy of the file there with the one I'm providing.
Then reboot normally.
This will solve that issue at least.
If the problem generally happens when the computer is entering a low power state, this would definitely be the cause of your problems.

Probably caused by : win32k.sys ( win32k!HmgLockEx+a3 )

most of the time i am using my toshiba satellite pro m30 without the battery with energy from power supply system. the battery is stored somewhere outside the computer since one month the real time clock shows a wrong time, if the computer is started after a while.

i think my cmos-battery will die soon.

has someone an idea, how this cmos-battery can be changed by myself?

Answer:Satellite Pro M30 - real time clock shows a wrong time

Hi Reinhard

I agree with you. It is time to replace CMOS battery. It is not easy and the unit must be disassembled. If you are not familiar with disassembling procedure it can be dangerous. A small mistake can result with hardware damaging.

If you want to do it alone you will do it on your own risk. Be sure that you use the right battery. Maybe you will not believe me but if you use wrong battery it could cause the battery explosion or other damage.

I am not 100% sure but the RTC battery must be placed on the left side near the touch pad. If you want to make it alone please be very gently. The notebook parts are very sensible.

So I recently have had the problem of my computers cpu spiking, I looked at some things and monitored the task manager/process explorer and saw that services.exe, Mcshield.exe, svchost.exe and sometimes even chrome, but this only started yesterday and I have had this computer for around 3 years now. Anything that would help me solve this problem would be greatly appreciated, because I am stumped.

Hello everyone,

For the second time within the past two weeks I've had quite an annoying problem regarding my left mouse button on my synaptics pointing device, all of a sudden the left mouse button will stop working. The right mouse button and the rest of the touchpad will work apart from being able to click the LMB function. I've had this happen once before quite a few months ago but thought nothing of it at the time. This occurs for around half a minute to sometimes a minute before returning to normal and being able to use the LMB. I am using a Lenovo Z580 if that is any help to anyone.

I have tried searching around the internet for any information regarding this problem but I have not been able to find any solution or information connected to my issue.

Thank you in advance!

Answer:Left Mouse Button - Stops working from time to time.

Hello LO mate when you click the button do you hear an audible click from inside the mouse it could be something as simple as a stuck micro switch.

Also if it is a wired one check the USB contacts too - in the plug and socket. You can clean them gently with a strip (about 5 mm with the corners rounded off) of old credit card with some lint free cloth around the end of it moistened very lightly with some alcohol

By the way just how old is the mouse?

I travel to Colorado from Texas frequently. The last three times I have made the trip, at some point when I change times zones, my 640XL displays a time that is 15 minutes faster than actual time. When this happens, it also will not automatically check emails so that I have to do it manually. The only solution I have found so far is to completely reset the phone and start over as if it is a new phone, uploading everything manually. This takes me a day. Anyone else experience this problem? Other solutions would be appreciated!

If I choose F1 and enter the correct date/time and press F10 to save and exit - XP then starts up normally but the next time I boot up, the same problem occurs.

I have a 4 year old computer that runs perfectly, except when I turn it off at night and then back on the next day, I loose a few hours on the time date at bottom of screen. I ajust each time I use it but the same thing happens each time I turn it off. Could it be the clock battery or ? My operating system is Windows XP Home
Thanks Lc

Answer:Windows XP time/date clock looses time after shut down.

Welcome to TSG...A bad CMOS battery will cause your machine to lose time. If the system is four years old, you're eligible for that issue...also, if the system has spent any lengthy amount of time (weeks or more) unplugged from AC power, it's more likely to happen.

Next reboot (after leaving it overnight), enter BIOS (setup) and see if the time there is slipping as well.

The battery itself (if that's what's bad) is cheap to replace...less than five bucks.

Please give us some specs on the hardware-make, model, etc.-and we can help you with battery replacement instructions.

Hi everyone,

I know that thread title may not be clear enough though it is exactly related to the issue I have.

The issue I'm facing lasts since years and I tried everything I could from what I gathered online to tackle it.
I used :
2 different computers (one Dell, one PackarBell)
3 different TV Tuner (2 dual, 1 single, all HD, 1 PCi and another PCI-e, 1 USB external)
Win7 x64 or x86
Clean installation or long run installation
With or without third party related software (Kodi, Win7MCServer, etc)
And I could go on like this for a long time to show how much this issue is lasting and I can't fix it. Of course, as it has been years, you could tell I have moved from houses to flats in the meantime and thus local installation doesn't seem to be part of the issue.

I checked the parameters linked to process startup, sleep mode, hardware setup and energy consumption modes, etc.
The issue
From time to time, the TV Tuner(s) in Win7MC will be advised as unavailable or signal said lost.
The fix
Most of the time I only need to run a channel scan, even interrupt it after 1% done, and go back to live TV to have it working again.
At worst reboot is necessary and even worst a brand new channel cleanup+scan.

My question
One could say that, as I already have "fixes" I could get along with it.Thing is when recordings are scheduled and do not kick in (while at night and sleeping or away from home) it is quite annoying to see when back on the HTPC that nothing happened si... Read more

I just noticed the clock on my Windows 10 tablet is running noticeably slow.
Over the last few days I've seen wrong times and done a manual sync to the time server, which sets it right again.

Now, if I bring up the calendar display, it's clear that the seconds are counting up in something like 1.25 second intervals.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Answer:Windows time clock running slow, losing time.

Please see this thread for possible solutions: Clock "slows down", yet is able to manually sync correctly.

Note that the OP has still not been able to fix it but it would be worth checking with him.

Dear all,

I spilt some water on my laptop a few days ago but fortunately it's completely dried out and working perfectly.... apart from this minor (but important) issue. I would appreciate your help.

Problem: the system time does not stay correct. Even after manually updating the BIOS time and also even after manually syncing it with the various servers available under the time options.

Fix: set the internet time sync interval to every minute rather than its default setting? How do I do this?

Much appreciated.

P.S. This couldn't be a CMOS battery issue surely because even when the system is on and plugged in the system time still deviates from correct. (I assume the CMOS battery is only used when the system is powered off.) If I need it replaced, how does that sit with my Dell hardware warranty?

I have a small problem with my Portege M400 Tablet PC. The laptop is working great most of the time. Unfortunately, from time to time, the screen just turns black - or to be more specific, the screen doesn't come up again. In most cases, the screen was switched off by my power saving profile and when I try to get the screen back on (e.g. by moving the cursor or pressing a key, just as usual), the screen remains black. I can see that the computer is running and I can e.g. hibernate the computer, but even after waking up, the screen is still black. It also doesn't help to change the power profile or the output or anything - the screen just remains like this until I reboot the computer.

I have the new bios 1.80 (because of the better fan control) and I updated the Intel chipset drivers already (I had the problem before, so it is not the update of the drivers). Any idea what it could be, maybe the bios (this was the first thing I've installed after buying the laptop as I knew before the fan will be very loud otherwise).

Okay, so everytime I run Chkdsk it always finds errors on the disk. I am unsure why, but if I run chkdsk back to back, it will keep constantly find new errors every time. Also, the Chkdsk takes about 2 and a half hours to complete, and always gets stuck at 10% for most of that time. [I run Chkdsk /f /r, it reboots the computer and runs]

This is what I have tried so far:
1) Running SFC /SCANNOW. It has fixed errors in the past used alongwith DISM. I just ran SFC again to be sure, no errors found.
2) Checking computer for malware. I have Malwarebytes Pro and Bitdefender Pro. I seriously doubt malware caused this since I have at most found 5 minor threats on my computer in the past year. Just to be sure, I ran a few scans in safe mode with Malwarebytes, and Hitman Pro, etc. All clean.

More Info on my problem:
The reason why I found out about the Chkdsk problem is because my computer has started booting up slow. About 2 weeks ago my computer would take 10 seconds to go from POST to login screen. Now it takes over 75 seconds [With Windows 8 Fast Start up Enabled]. I began investigating why, with no apparent reason. No big start up items, nothing running at start up that shouldn't be there.

Lately, I have been reading Errors and Warnings in Event Viewer as an idea to figure if anything was wrong. I have dealt with a few errors individually, but no improvement.

Here is some Info on programs I use on my computer.

I have problem with my laptop.
From time to time the display dimmed for a few seconds and restore again.
It does not matter laptop runs on batterie or is plugged.

Can somebody give me an advise?

Answer:Satellite R630-144: From time to time display dimmed for a few seconds

Theoretically it could be only a software issue; for example display driver starts to do some strange things? in such case I would recommend updating or reinstalling the display driver to check if this could helps?

But it could be also an hardware problem; FL-inverter
FL inverter is a small part which controls the backlight so theoretically it could be also an FL inverter malfunction? but this is just my guess
This should be checked by an technician to get more info.

Hello all,

I have a rather strange problem, from the past 5-6 days, I noticed that whenever I click any icon on the desktop /start menu, my machine just sits there, uses all the resources and after about 90s-120s launches the application. The application works fine without any problem though as it used to. When I launch the same application from the Program Files folder, the application launches very quickly without any problem and without hanging the machine.

Also, it takes very long only when the bare application is clicked, to elaborate, if i click on file.txt on the desktop, it opens in notepad without any problem, if i click on Notepad icon to launch Notepad, thats when the system freezes as mentioned above. This is similar for all applications, I can launch a .fla file from the desktop and it will launch pretty quickly in flash, but if I launch the flash program by double clicking on the icon on the desktop, then I can go have breakfast before i get control of my machine :D

The strange part is that almost all of the applications have this problem of freezing the machine when the icon on the desktop is used to launch the pogram, but only IE launches quickly without any problem.

I use kaspersky anti virus and scanned the machine, did a root kit scan on my machine and nothing came up. I scanned the machine with Malaware's Anti-Malware too and nothing came up. I am not an expert but I ran a HJT scan, and glanced through it, there were no entries that were spurios.

When I boot my computer, it freezes with a blank, black screen. This happens after the black Windows XP loading screen appears. At this point I have to turn off the computer manually by pressing the on/off button and then try again. It comes up with the screen asking for Safe Mode/With Networking/Last Known Good Configuration etc. The computer usually always works and loads perfectly after this (I have tried both Last Known Good Configuration and Start Windows Normally several times, but I still get the same problem. I don't know why my computer never works the first time but usually works the second or third time, after I turn it off. By the way, this problem also occurs when I restart the computer.Hope this is enough information and that you can help me. Thanks.BTW my computer:Dell Dimension 5150 Pentium 4 HT1GB Ram hope this is enoughI'm new to this forum thing... but I know a fair deal about computers (I think!)

On the web there has been some fair amount of reporting that the P100 time clock fails to keep correct time.
Mine has been doing this for some months now.

I have tried all of the online recommendations like bios update, etc with no luck and then also to change the RTC battery.
I disassembled the laptop, (very easy when using the instructions from '') , however I found it impossible to purchase a new battery ( battery 'green with plug in leads and marked 0706).

I unplugged the battery for a couple of minutes and then plugged it back in, then re-assembled the laptop so I could use it until I could perhaps find a new battery.

HOWEVER, the time clock now works perfectly.

I remember reading on another post somewhere that temporariliy uplugging the battery fixes the problem, AND IT DOES.
If this happens again I will extend the RTC battery wires out to an easy access area under a cover where I can unplug and replug the battery in a minute or so.

Answer:Satellite Pro P100 time clock fails to keep correct time

Thanks for this info buddy.
I have also read the thread about the P100 and time clock issue.
Someone said that the ASP technician removed the CMOS battery and plugged it again.
This helped!

PS: I would not recommend disassembling the notebook even if you have found some guidelines in the internet? in my opinion the risk of damage is too high. However, it?s just my personal opinion?.

Greetings mate

i bought a y410 on thanksgiving. it has been giving problems since then. i gifted it to someone so till now i was not able to take it back. i got it back now so was wondering if still i can take it back to the lenovo workshop or is there a way to fix this problem.i have vista on my laptop (it came with vista home, i upgraded it to vista premium)problem(s); When I unlock the computer or start it the screen comes then blinks twice and then finally comes back. During this process sometimes the volume goes away and some times the mouse pointer is hung and it does not move. Very infrequently the wireless is gone too. i have tried to get all the latest drivers from the lenovo site. Whenever something goes down and i see it in the device manager it shows the device is working properly. if you run the speaker test it says everything is working correctly and i can see the volume bar going up and down. even if i connect a external speaker this thing does not work. For mouse hanging if i re-start the computer it comes back up almost everytime but there is no such guarantee for the volume. Same for screen it always blinks no matter what. What should i do to solve this. i am very frustrated with this product to the verge that i am going to suggest this to social aliases in my company to stay away from lenovo if i do not get this fixed in the next one or two weeks. any one else seen this and know how to fix this?? thanks for help Abhi

Answer:screen blinks, speaker is off from time to time and sometimes mouse hangs

Hi, Even I am facing the similar issue since I brought Y410. Whenever I unlock system from sleep mode, Its always hangs and neither keyboard nor mouse works. So I need to restart my laptop everytime. It happened in 90% of cases. I am occasionally lucky to see my laptop recovered from sleep mode. Please help me. My configuration is Intel Core2 Duo CPU [email protected] Ghz , 2 GB RAM and 120 GB HDD and Windows Vista home Premium edition OS. Thanks in advance, Regards, Jagjit

I recently posted in this forum about the problem I was having with proficient hackers. I subsequently received really useful information which allowed me to secure my PC just a little bit better. Since then though the hacker has targetted my NAT router and compromised it.
There is a reason for starting a separate thread today.
What I found is that I can't browse anywhere on the internet using HTTP and still be safe. Very quickly my traffic is detected and so the PC hostname and my live IP address become known. Forexample, my presence on this site is something that can be used to identify me. The number of concurrent users is not that high at the present time.
And if my IP becomes known, apparently my router can be successfully attacked.
Of course I can browse using a proxy but I've found that I can't log on to BC and post a reply if I'm using a proxy. And the same is true of other sites.
So what does this tell me ? Well, most of the internet is being monitored by an unknown number of hackers who can ignore or use that information as they see fit. So this is a serious problem.
And therefore, here's my question: is there any plan to implement SSL/TLS on the BC site in the near future ? 'Cos I'd really like to continue posting here.
And is it possible to increase the formatting options if you choose to post without using javascript ? I found that if don't allow scripts to run you can't even use <CR> in your po... Read more

I guess only the site owner can answer the question about HTTPS. ENTER

Anyway, here's a comment from Mssrs Gibson and Laporte on the subject ENTER
"Leo: Yeah. In our business we're constantly coming across new victims of
cybercrime. And in thinking about it one day we realized that if we - the industry,
really - simply followed your advice of HTTPS-only everywhere, we would have
stopped every single financial cybercrime we've ever been called in for on a post-
mortem. Unfortunately, we were never able to share much event detail with the
public. Suffice to say, if secure HTTP had been the only allowed protocol, not a single
one of the crimes would have been possible. So [quoting listener question] 'Why not simply block all non-secure HTTP traffic, attempt to automatically redirect it to HTTPS to minimize
inconvenience? I'm asking rhetorically, of course. Thanks to you and Leo for all your
efforts each week to put together a world-class podcast. Thank you.'
Steve: So this was a great question."
"You need to have a security certificate on your server."
... "So, I mean, there are still too many barriers to HTTPS. It's getting better all the time. "
"So this is a perfect example of slow evolution in our understanding of the importance of
security on the Internet. I know we'll get there someday. I mean, there will always be
sites that are HTTP only. But I think that'll end up at some point b... Read more

(At least the Recycle Bin can be removed without a registry edit hack. These have always been my top 2 peeves of Windows.)

How please.

From the desktop view I simply want to look down and to the right to see the ?Sunday, September 8, 2013 ? 2:17PM? I see now ... but have to move my mouse over there and hover over it first. Why would I want to have to do that?

It wasn't possible in XP (that I know of) ? not without having to expand your taskbar to twice the width. (And let's face it, there is nothing quite as intimidating as a big huge fat thick taskbar.)

Answer:How to change desktop taskbar time to date+time?

Hello Win8fait,

If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to show the full date and time on your taskbar.

Hello! My newly installed windows 8.1 on my new laptop Lenovo ThinkPad E540 I have the unfamous boot problem... ( )I've read all the stuff about hybrid shutdown and everything, tried to disable it, played with UEFI boot priority in BIOS, and when finally it seemed like FastBoot IS working, (tried it and everything went well and fast), today, when I turned on my lapop, it started, and after windows intro loading animation, it went black, and I heard like HDD stopped working (everything went silent - just like every time since I started to have this problem)...AND finally, I'm desperate...I turned my laptop off and on yesterday, just to test FastBoot, and, as I said, with no problems... but the day after, same thing happened...So - when I turn it off and start again in short time, it seems to work. But when I shut it down for example in the evening, in the morning it freezes again, have to turn it off by pressing power button and then on again, which works... It is driving me crazy..IS THERE SOMETHING TO GET IT WORK??

hello, i'm been using an HP laptop for a year now, and now i'm having this issue with my intel core i-7 5500U speed lock. sometimes it's normal, going between 2.5-2.7 GHz.. but at times and for no reason what so ever. it goes down to 0.15 GHz, yes. that low and i don't even know why, please help me if possible

Answer:my laptop's core speed is decreasing from time to time

Hi Haz,Laptops do this for power savings when the OS Doesent demand a high Prosessor speed. If you would like it to be high all the time and get better performance you can goStart Menu>Control Panel>Power Options>Then tap on High Performance and beside that press "Change Plan Settings">Then press "Change advanced power settings">Now go down to the prosessor power management section and expand it>Then goto "Minimum Prosessor State" and put it to 100% If this has helped please let me know!

howdy all,

I came in this morning from the weekend. Tried to logon but I received the following error message:
"current time on this computer and the current time on the network are different."

I checked the time on our server and it was off by about 10 minutes. I changed the local time on my machine to reflect the same time on our server but still no avail.

Is there a fix to my predicament? Do I need to have the local time be updated by our server every time I logon? Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch!

Answer:Unable to logon - Local time and network time are different

Network setup problem. See your network system administrator, unless that is you.

We use free time clock software available by download. TClockex, and others.
They set your time by reference to an atomic clock online, and you never have to worry about it.

You can also set your desktop to synchronise with the network time automatically at boot, but my memory is not what it used to be.

Heads up. FWIW.

I was going to post a query about this but decided to update my version of Pest Patrol first.

After the upgrade, (gawd it's a slow download), I ran the new version.
It no longer finds CWS.GoogleMS.3

I am assuming it was a false positive, and it now fixed (or ignored?) by the new version.

So, if you get the above "pest", upgrade to the newest version. Bazza

Answer:Yoga p40 - Time runs faster than actual time

Hi there, Fabriceknecht -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
I would suggest looking at your notebook BIOS page, check to make sure the clock date and time is accurate.  Also - check for updated BIOS files, then flash to newer BIOS if present. Most of the time this can work to resolve this issue, if nothing helps, it may need to be sent to a service center for hardware replacement.
Update us how it goes.

I am connected with a signal that states very strong, but my packets are not properly working. Sometimes when i start my computer the sent packets will go to 93 then stop completely, and the Received Packets will stop at 3 completely.

Then i have to restart my PC and the Packets sent and received will FLOW in fast, then at around 2300 and 2500 they come to a screeching halt, and both pc's are greyed out on the status window. When im gaming, my packets will drop to zero and it will freeze for a period of time,.

As i am typing now im barely receiving or sending any packets.

This Very Frustrating please help me out before i toss this stuff in the garbage and try to get my old stuff working again.

I have IC/TCP automatic checked and Dns automatic checked to
Edit: one thing i noticed is that when everything was connected it said there was an IP conflicting with the one im using, what does that mean?

Hi all
Meet a strange problem - the fingerprint sensor works not every time but 1 from 2. Setting it normally, Windows hello exists. But when login (doesn't matter from sleep or from  boot) some times it works, some times there are no reaction at all. Had an assumption that system doesn't load all necessary drivers etc, but even after waiting a while sensor is not working.
Some times if to slide the finger several times back and forth very fast, system tells "can't recognize" and then if to move the finger normally, it works fine.
But some times nothing helps and I'm forced to press a button to go to the login page. Now the next strange ting happens every time - I've set both password and PIN login ways, and all other NB I have "remember" my choice and offer me PIN login always. But my 5450 every time offer me password as a default, so I need to choose PIN again each time.
It looks like system forgot the choice, fingerprint completely but PIN only as a default choice.
e5450 1 month old, Win 10 pro.
