Solved: Typing characters all look blacked out.

Question: Solved: Typing characters all look blacked out.

When attempting to type in MS Word 2000 on win98 platform all of the characters are covered by a growing block of black. Temporary relief of this is accomplished by changing format background; but this doesn't last too long. Print preview shows the entire page blacked out. I'm new to MS Word 2000 and don't have the slightest idea what's up.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I am typing I have text characters turn black or whole lines of text turn black. This happens on all sorts of websites and occasionally within programs themselves. I also have issues where text disappears in Browser tabs.  I have been trying to figure exactly the cause of this, but I am not having any luck. I notice this with both Firefox and Chrome. I am attaching a screen grab for reference and any system update have been completed.   Thank youKevin

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.

As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)

Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?

Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.

I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

Can we customize a key so that when pressed it will type several characters?
I would use that function to quickly enter my ?user name? or email address when accessing internet pages that require filling such fields plus the Password.

Thank you for any help.

Answer:Typing several characters with one keystroke

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.

If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.

Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.

If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

Answer:keyboard typing wrong characters

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

Hi. I use gedit as editor in my Linux systems (SUSE and Fedora); there I find that I can't type in accented characters like I used to do in Windows.

In the text editor in Windows, even using an English keyboard configuration, I could type in accented characters by entering a combination of Alt+<ASCIIcode>, for example Alt+130 would type in the accented 'e' character; this sequence doesn't work in Linux.

Hi, hoping someone here can help me...

Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).

Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.

Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.

Any ideas?

I have a brand new Satellite C50-A-1CK which is perfect for my needs EXCEPT I continually get double characters appearing on screen when typing which is:
A. VERY frustrating
B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.

Please does anyone know of a fix for this? It can affect any key on the keyboard and it doesn't matter if I type slow or quick, press the keys firmly or as light as possible.

Have checked for firmware updates but none available.

Thanks in advance!

I hope that someone can help you and me on this!

I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.

Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.

I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.

Really frustrating

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?

Answer:Laptop keys also typing adjacent characters

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). Answer:windows live mail typing characters

I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

Answer:new problem, keyboard is not typing accurate characters,

There are a mix of ideas here: not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Do NOT check any box you see about removing the software. The above is not the usual uninstall, it just disengages the software from the hardware. When you restart the computer it will find your keyboard as new hardware then re-install the software from the supplied drivers. Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. hi bijoy3d,
Welcome to the Forums.
What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

Answer:Solved: Odd characters

I just today found the solution to this. I use the Pale Moon browser, a derivative of Firefox whose options are parallel in this instance. I have a preference for clean fonts, selected one in particular, and in Options --> Content tab --> Fonts & Colors --> Advanced button --> "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" is a checkbox that's checked by default. I unchecked it, and that's why I was seeing the strange symbols. When I checked it again, everything displayed as intended.

Answer:[SOLVED] Characters become numbers

I think the Num Lock key may have been pressed.

You see, laptops don't have a number keypad like desktop keyboards do. Instead, they have secondary buttons.

Much like the numbers 1 to 0 can be change to an ASCII character by holding the shift key, the letter keys can be changed to numbers by pressing the Num Lock key..

Look for Numlk and press it

Initially, when I was connected to the Internet all the characters were displayed properly. However, later some of the characters and words in the web pages and in other Windows applications were not displayed or a horizontal line was displayed. I was unable to type characters on the keyboard as they would not be displayed on the screen in the web browser as well as other Windows applications. This happened when I was connected to the Internet and when I was not connected to the Internet.
I ran Spybot, Adaware and an anti-virus program and it still happened. Also Windows was up to date according to the Windows update.
When I restarted the computer all the characters and words were properly displayed in the web browser and in other applications. All the characters I typed were displayed on the screen. I connected to the Internet and the characters were displayed properly.
How can I prevent this from happening again? What could cause characters to disappear?

My best guess: Create autocorrect or autotext entries for them. I can't imagine how you'd get them into the insert symbol dialog unless you bought some kind of program that creates fonts and... created a font.

I just newly reformatted & installed windows xp onto my computer.

Going through some web pages, everything seemed fine so far; but when i typed in a search on youtube, i got these characters that appear as boxes with numbers in them.

I tried selecting a diff encoding besides UTF-8 from view>character encoding, but i just got similar results...only with different unknown characters/symbols.

Is it possible i can maybe update my fonts/character list to fix this? i figured the character could not be rendered/recognized, because it was not available from the list...

or does anybody have a solution?

Answer:[SOLVED] Some characters appear as boxes with numbers in them?

If the encoding is correct the numbers indicate that these are japanese characters. Unless you are using a font that is capable of displaying these characters the above will be the result. Most Windows versions will have few if any of these fonts.

By configuring the fonts in your browser you may be able to display these characters. But unless you read the language it doesn't matter.

The fix is too set your game resolution to a 16:10 aspect ratio not a 4:3 one. Try setting it at 1280×800 that is a 16:10 resolution. Some older games may not support widescreen resolutions.

Either you are in a Non-US English location and have the US layout, or vice-versa
US Shift+2 is @
UK Shift+2 is "

Control Panel | Language and Regional Options
On Regional tab, select the correct language for your location.
Click the Languages tab, then click the Details... button
Select the correct Default input language. This should also install the correct keyboard
Under Installed services, if the incorrect keyboard is shown, click the Add... button
Select the language and layout, and click OK
You can remove the other keyboard if needed. Helps to keep it from getting switched back accidentally.

Afternoon all,

I know that this request is a rather trivial matter, but the difficulty of perfecting the declarations is what seems to be stumping me. I basically have a string which is created (from a COM object) with the string along the lines of:
ans = -4.3029
The problem is I only need the number (with the decimal and negative sign as well), with the text and blank space removed. The problem is I am struggling to get it right.

I used the Regex.Replace code to remove the text. At first I tried "\D", but ONLY leaves numbers, no mathematical punctuation.

Then I tried "[^0.9 .-]", but now Visual Basic adds an additional 2/3 (depend on the length of the number) blank spaces before each result.

So I would like to know how it would be possible to define the Regex.Replace function to accept only numerical characters, along with standard numerical punctuation.

Thank you for your help!

Answer:Solved: Remove certain characters from string

I'm greeted by the subtle insult by the phrase on the front page "There's no such thing as a stupid question, but they're the easiest to answer!" as I realise that my problem was the fact that I had a space within "[0-9 .-]" That would explain the problem I had. As everything is fine now, this can be closed as solved.

The Title pretty much explains it but I need to know how to get the number of characters in a Std::string and ouput it as a integer e.g:
void main()

std::string str = "Cheesecake";
int NumOfChars;

Get Number of characters in str and put the number in NumOfChars...
NumOfChars should then equal 9 (obviouslly starts counting from 0)

(You can Probubly Guess I'm Using C/C++, VC++ to be specific)

Anyone know how to do this? Any Help Would be great...

Answer:Solved: Get Number of Characters in Std::String

In a string is a character array so the Length property gives the number of characters. If that's not the case in C (I think it is but haven't used C for quite a few years) then you could parse the string in a loop, one character at a time, counting the number of characters until you reached the end of the string (terminated by a null character, isn't it?).

I have two excel spreadsheet that I need to compare using vlookup, using case number to do so. The two sheets have case number stored differently, for example, one has the, displayed as 2012DT00001 or 2001CM00012 and the other sheet displays them as 2012DT1 or 2001CM12. Obviously, they are the same record but when using vlookup to compare the record and bring over information that is on one and not the other it does not work well. I have tried using vlookup to compare and look for approximate matches (TRUE). However, when I look at a sampling of the information it misses 80% of the records. At this point, I am thinking that the vlookup function is missing those records as a result of the two case numbers being different as a result of the unneeded zeros in the one. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How can i edit characters within a string of characters?

Here are two ways to do it:With your data in Column A:
1) 2012DT00001 2012DT1
2) 2001CM00012 2001CM12
In cell B1 enter the formula: =LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5))Drag down as needed. You can now use Column B in your =VLOOKUP() something along the lines of:=VLOOKUP(B1,Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The second way is to use the formula directly in your =VLOOKUP() which eliminates the need for column BSomething like:=VLOOKUP(LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)),Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The trick is in the: VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)) section, it takes the last five characters of your text string, IE 00001 or 00012and converts them from TEXT to a NUMBER, and since Excel strips out any leading zeros in a number you end up with your required digit.See how that works for you.MIKE

When accounting software (in my experience) outputs an account in XL format, I find that the spaces are not necessarily spaces. It's easier to explain if I give you an example. I am attaching a small sample of the output. Columns A - F are from the software, and I have added Column G.

The formula in Column G4 is just E4-F4, and I have copied that down Column G. This formula evaluates initially to #VALUE!, and the question is Why? I have highlighted cell F4 and pressed Delete, which now allows the formula to evaluate correctly.

From looking around various help screens, I have found the standard answer that there must be some non-numeric character in the apparently blank cell. However, if you highlight for example cell F5 and press F2, there is no sign of a space, or any other character. However, just to make matters more complicated, if after pressing F2, you press Delete and then Return, the formula evaluates correctly!

Something has obviously been deleted, but what? If it was just a few cells, I could press Delete on each and be done. But I sometimes have hundreds of rows of output to deal with each month, which makes that impractical. At the moment, I get around it by inserting extra columns and using =IF(ISNUMBER(..... to copy across the "real" numbers and put a proper blank where there is no number. But that's clunky and it would be a lot easier if I had a way of converting these apparently blank cells to actual blank cells.

that should work - just tried on your sample

if you do an isbalnk() then you get a false
I tried trim() and value() both failed to work

so I used find and replace twice

first i left the find empty - so it would find all the blanks - included those non-blank cells that appear blank

all the blanks now have fred
i then used find and replace again

I was under the impression from working with excel, that to filter by a certain number of character in this case i need 10, i type in ? 10 times (??????????)

but for some reason when i try this on Access, its says "enter a valid value" i am using 2010 version of Access i am not sure why this is the case but its a little irriating. The file i am working with is so big i can't even export it to excel, this is one of the reasons i need to filter for 10 characters on Access

I have this table with a field that accepts ID numbers. Unfortunately, the data is inputted from a barcode scanner which adds a ; to the beginning of the id numbers and a ? to the end of it. E.g. ;1234567?
Is there any way I could have Access filter out or remove those unwanted characters when the data is entered?
And could it be done without code because I'm kinda a new to Access.

Much thanks for any help
