Solved: File Transfer & Installation

Question: Solved: File Transfer & Installation

Hi Experts,

I have a CD-RW backup disc with 4200 files (c.300 MB). I need to transfer about 200 of those files and install them on my new hard drive (Drive C). Although the mechanics of how to do this may be as clear as a bell to most, it isn't to me. Any help will be immensely appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I try to install the Sims 2 once it reaches 59%, an error message pops up saying, "A problem occured when trying to transfer the file 'TSDATA\Res\Sims3D\Sims12.package' from the media." I don't know what to do because the only options I get are, "Retry" and "Cancel". The strange thing is, I explored into the disk and I found the file in Disk 3 in a .zip file. What is happening? I bought a 120 GB Corsair Force 3 SSD to use as my system drive. My current Windows installation is working just fine and I heard there's a way to transfer your current Windows installation to a new drive in a few minutes rather than spending hours and hours re installing each program one by one.

How do I transfer my installation to the new drive to avoid having to re install every program?

Can this be done for free or does it require the purchase of special software?

Answer:[SOLVED] How to transfer Windows installation to new drive?

You can clone your whole Hard Drive over to the SSD with Acronis Drive Image. It's not free but works with cloning from a larger drive to a smaller SSD drive which free cloning software doesn't do

I just bought a new pc and I want to transfer all my files from my old machine to my new. I went to the microsoft help site and they suggested the easiest way to transfer files is by inserting my XP cd for the new system into the old pc and running the transfer wizard then inserting the XP cd into my new system. According to microsoft, this would do it. My problem is that I bought a HP pc and those machines do not come with the operating system cd. If I want a copy of the operating system then I must burn it, most of the software is on a secondary drive on the pc. So what I did was backed up all my files on the old system to a portable HD and I plan on installing those backed up files on the new system. My question is will installing the files into the new system in this manner do the job? I don't want to do something that is going to corrupt my new system. If this won't work, what is the simplest way to install my old files into my new system? Thank you in advance

Evening everyone,

I want to transfer files, such as games, documents (both run Office 97), address book etc. on my old PC (W95) to my newer one (W98) and was wondering what exactly I have to do. They both have 10/100 ethernet cards, as I have Broadband, and I've been lent the correct cable to connect them (RG45 crossover cable).

I only have the one monitor, but have a keyboard and mouse for each, and apart from plugging in the cable in the new one (as I would lose my net connection) I'm all set up and ready to go... except that I don't know what to do next.

As I will lose my connection for the interim, could you please either let me know everything I'll need to do (I'm fairly competent, but just have never needed to find this out) , or post a link to the info.

Thanks in advance..

I have just finished setting up my wife's new laptop with a Win 8.1 OS. This is the first time I have worked with Win 8 and managed to run through the set up and use the system with very few problems. However when I transfer her backed up files from her old computer to the new computer with a flash drive the transferred files always go into the One drive documents on the cloud, and and not into documents on the C drive. I have tried copying them and sending them from the One drive to the C drive Documents as they both show up in the documents folder, but I get the message the C drive documents folder is in use. The only way I can get them into the C drive at the moment is to drag and drop them which is a long drawn out procedure. Obviously there is a simple way which I am missing, I am sure someone will enlighten me.

Thank you.

Answer:[SOLVED] File Transfer

You cannot copy the Directory Documents to the C:\Users\[UserName} because there is a Documents directory there that already. You can open up both the Documents folders you want to copy and Select All of the files, so they are highlighted and drag them Into the Documents folder under the User file

Answer:Solved: Can not get Ultra VNC to file transfer

XP or Vista? 1.0.5 is stable and for Vista so that might work there. 1.0.4 is more of a RC version, skip it. I use 1.0.2 on XP and file transfer works fine. I connect by local I.P. (all within the same network), I'm using the file transfer icon on the top of the VNC Viewer screen and I have the windows firewall (no other firewalls) open for both the viewer and server.

Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again.

What is the proper way to transfer files from a PC that has stopped working to a new PC?

I suspect the power supply died in my old PC. It would not power up and I tried alternate power strips and wall sockets to ensure no issues with power source. I extracted the HDD from my old PC and am debating how is best to access and copy some of my most recent data files (music, pictures, docs) onto the new PC. I have an external back-up drive that has most of my files - just missing about a month worth of updates.

1) Do I purchase a HDD enclosure to power up the drive or try to add the drive to the new PC? The enclosure option is certainly the easiest way - I think. What say you?

2) Also will the old drive - once connected and powered - try to boot the old OS? Just curious what complications I should expect and how to avoid them.

Thank you for your advice.
Basics on the PC's:
Old PC
Pentium 4 with HyperThreading (i got a lot of miles out of this one)
HP tower w/ Windows XP Home Media Center
HDD - Western Digital SATA 250GB

New PC
Intel i7
HP tower w/ Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
HDD - 1TB (have not looked to find more details)

Answer:Solved: File Transfer from dead PC to new PC

An external enclosure would be the easiest way. If the new PC has an open expansion bay and a spare SATA port on the motherboard, it would take a small amount of work to install the old drive in the new PC.

Unless you make changes in the BIOS settings, the computer should not automatically try to boot from the old drive.

There may be an issue where you get access denied error messages if you try to open folders on the old drive. In that case you will need to take ownership of the folders and files.

You could do it over a LAN Network very easily, VIA cabled network, or a wireless network. if a network is not available, a simple crossover cable could be used, assuming a RJ-45 connection is on each PC.

I mapped drives on the Win 7 box to the XP shares

when I transfer any file, to the mapped drive (share) it often fails saying error with connection etc..

Answer:Solved: file transfer win8 failed

sounds like you have file sharing turned off on one or all of the devices. they also should technically be on the same work group, but it's easy to get around that if you share a folder on all of the devices. it's pretty easy to do, you want to search for how to enable file sharing on the specific device. for the windows 8, you can go to the control panel and then network and sharing center. advanced sharing options are on the left side of the window, make the appropriate choice.

I just used the File and settings transfer wizard to move the file it created to a new computer. I am now wondering if this is the only situation it can be used in.

Say I have a computer that is not new and I want the files and settings to be migrated to it? Would that result in a complete hosing of the old PC or would it just overwrite ?

And if using a flash drive to transfer does FAST Wizard just import them
directly or do you have to move the file to the HD of the new PC first?

per your first question;

This is a good basic tutorial - note that files can be transferred WITHOUT changing settings.

per your 2nd question;

Can you please kindly help me to solve the below interesting issue? (I will make my best to make myself understood, which is sometimes very difficult)

I need to see DIRECTLY in Windows Explorer (I use Win Xp) what is contained in the cell A1 on Worksheet1 of an Exel file (most often, the contents of the cell is a date in special Excel date format = yyyy-mm-dd, but sometimes the contents is a text). The purpose of all this is to sort Excel files (according to the contents A1 of the particular file) directly in Windows Explorer without the need for opening the files.

I hope that this could be realizable by transferring the contents of the cell into one of the standard Excel file properties that can be seen in )Windows Explorer) Details View (eg. Description, Subject or any other property) every time on saving the Excel file.

In addition:
- If the contents of the cell is "preserve", the Excel file property should be left as it was before I opened the file.
- If the contents of the cell is "delete", the Excel file property should be (strange to read)deleted.
On saving the Exel file, whose cell A1 in Worksheet1 contains „2012-01-05“, this date should go into the Excel file property Description.
- However, if the contents of the cell is „shall be done later“ then „shall be done later“ should go into the property. If the contents is „preserve“, the property should be left as is. If the contents is „delete“, the property... Read more

OKay anyone tell me if this makes sense. I have XP Home SP2 and I have XP pro SP2. THe XP Home SP2 is a clients but my own PC's are XP Pro SP2.

The Client has an old Windows 98 that we want to get all the settings off of. I have used the FAST (files and settings transfer wizard). When I make a wizard disk with XP home SP 2 it makes the disk but when ran the setup stops right after the first opening screen telling me the Scan cannot continue.

Now here is the wierd part. I CAN run the same wizard on my XP Pro PC and it will run just fine. THe problem is when I copy over the USMT data to the new PC XP Home it tells me it was created with a different version and will not restore!

So to sum up.
Old system - Win 98 - Will Run XP FAST disk from XP Pro but not from XP Home.
New System - XP home will not restore a USMT made from a Windows XP Pro SP 2 Wizard disk.

Any thoughts? The main thing i would like to avoid - Installing any of these documents to my own computers.

I was wondering if you think copying the USMT directory from the XP pro SP2 to the XP Home SP2 and then running the wizard from that may work?

I am finally getting around to upgrading my XP-Pro machine to Win-7. I'm in the process of running Windows Easy Transfer to save what can be saved on an external drive.

The process is saving my normal user account (with administrator rights) a second administrator account and something called "Shared items". I didn't pay too much attention to the shared items category until after I'd started the save process. Now I notice that it is in the process of saving 167GB of something. This doesn't make any sense to me a all, since the entire drive is only 160 GB and part of that is dedicated to a Ubuntu installation.

Can someone explain this?

Answer:Solved: Windows Easy Transfer is creating an enourmous file

Well, after letting the first attempt finish creating the transfer file, I restarted Windows Easy Transfer a second time and took a more careful look at what it was proposing to back up. Turns out that it was including the entire contents of the external drive that I intended to save the transfer data file to.

You don't get to see this unless you select "customize" under the shared options item and then "advanced" to see what will be included. Seems pretty dumb to include the contents of the drive that will be used to save the file, without any sort of warning.

I bought a new 64GB Class 10 MicroSDHC card to put in my Samsung Galaxy S5. For the last three days I've been trying to add ~26GB of music to the card without success. I've tried transferring it from my laptop with a card reader, transferring it from my laptop straight to the phone and using windows media player's sync function. It takes half a day or more to transfer all the files so it's been tough to troubleshoot what's going on.

In all three cases I formatted the SD card from my phone first so I'd be working with a fresh card. After the transfer is done the card will show "35GB out of 64GB" used up. When I go into a music player (I've tried several) it only shows the A and B artists and sometimes the latter letters, X,Y, and Z. When I look in explorer every artists folder is in the music folder, but then when I open the artists folder none of the music is actually in there.

I've looked through every folder in the SD card and I cannot find any of these missing files. I've tried doing some google-fu but I can't find any similar problems like this. Anybody have an idea about whats going on?

Answer:Solved: MicroSD Card File Transfer Missing lots of Files

Where did you buy this card? It could be a fake or faulty.

This should work on SD cards as well:

My last problem was solved and everything works fine now. I need the documents and emails from the old computer. I have it on my external and made a copy to my root C drive.

The problem is that I used Windows file transfer 7 and I want the files back to my Vista computer that I reinstalled. When I use Windows file transfer I get an error message that says I should choose a valid file.

What can I do?

Answer:Windows file transfer doesn't transfer back

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.. I didn't really know what to put it under..

I was upgrading my system, from XP to Vista. I tried the 'keep all my current files and settings' option for the upload, but it wouldn't let me use it.
So, I used the file and settings transfer wizard to transfer all my files to my external hard drive. Then I deleated my files on my computer - no point in having two copies. (I now know how stupid this idea was).
When I had successfuly uploaded Widows vista onto my computer, I found that it didn't actualy have the files and settings transfer wizard - it had something called 'Easy Transfer' instead. Easy tranfer is incompatible with the File and settings transfer wizard.

So, now all my files are sitting on my Hard drive in .dat files, and I don't know how to get them back.

Help me please.

Answer:File and Settings Transfer Wizard vs. Easy Transfer

you could download and install FAST to complete the transfer. i know that solves the problem when migrating from one XP /SP combination to another, perhaps it will work for an XP to Vista migration too.

this link is for v2.6, but 3.0 is also available on the site.

I have setup a shared drive so I can access my files with my Android devices but the transfer speed is very slow around 500 KB - 1.5 MB per second. My QNAP NAS that also using SMB is transfering very fast up to 12 MB/s. Can i increase transfer speed of SMB?

Answer:Increase transfer speed of windows file transfer (SMB)

Android smb shares are always slow.

I use Fast File Transfer which when in wifi direct mode gets up to 5 MB/s but have never managed to get more. This uses http protocol rather than smb.

Fast file transfer app is in google playstore and easy to use. Nothing is needed on pc side - all done from a browser.

In the end, usb tethering is quickest way.

I have 2 PCs, both running XP Pro SP2.
One is mine and one is my wife?s.
Both are connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 v3 router which is then connected to a cable modem.
Both can connect at high speed to the internet.
Both are on the same workgroup and have unique names.
They can see each other in the workgroup.
They can ping each other.
I can browse all shared drives in both directions from both PCs.
Everything seems to be working perfectly except if I try and transfer a file from my PC to my wife?s it takes approx 2 minutes per MB. However if I transfer a file the other way it works flawlessly and at high speed.

I have checked that all the required services are running and that there is only one master browser.

I have changed all the cables and tried different ports on the router.

NetMeter shows a maximum transfer speed of about 250kbps and the networking tab in task manager shows a network utilization of only 1%

Any advice would be gratefully received, as this is slowly driving me insane.

Answer:Slow file transfer in one direction, quick transfer the other way!

You should try data transfer using something other than WInbdows Networking. Set up some FTP server software for example. This way you can see if the problem is with the network or with Windows.

Well, have a dilly of a pickle here. First off, the old system specs:

Win XP Pro, IE6.0, SP2, all latest updates.

Now, this is a brand new pc, and not much is wrong with it, except for one thing. When I doubleclick an msi file, it doesn't work. This was tested with an msi file from here:

And then I tried it with some that are already installed on my system. Not to re-install them, but to see if it said the same thing as the one above, and it does.

A bit of background: I'm studying via the Open University for my degree, and one piece of software they give you is called Weblite Viewer. Its for viewing all types of molecules, etc, instead of just seeing them in 2D on paper.

So, I installed it as normal, leaving everything on default. However, when my mate came round last Friday, and tried to install the above, it opened up with the Viewer program, not the install itself.

I saw this, and went to uninstall the viewer, as I noticed this before that it associates with msi files for a certain type of molecule extension. Tried again, no joy.

So, bearing in mind I wasn't in a good mood when this happened, Friday night and gaming night, I went to Windows Explorer, File Types, and clicked on the msi file. Noticed it still said Weblite Viewer, so looked in the one before that requires the Windows Installer, and edited the proper... Read more

I'm upgrading to a new ASUS motherboard, new chipset (x79 to x99) and a new processor. I'm going to try to run my current Windows 10 installation (a retail copy - not OEM) without reinstalling from scratch.

On the previous install (after backing everything up) I removed as many of the old system drivers as made sense (USB3, graphics, etc..) and deactivated any software that needed that. I'm close to ready to see what happens. If it all fails then I'll just reinstall from scratch - which I'll do anyway on some rainy day. I'm just interested in seeing how well Windows 10 will cope with such a change of hardware - though it's still an ASUS Deluxe board, a recent Intel Chipset, and a fairly recent processor.

BUT - HERE'S THE QUESTION: When one makes such a major hardware change Windows10 will certainly complain and require reactivation. But is there any grace period??

I'm hoping I might have a couple of days to confirm that everything works properly before having to call Microsoft. If there's a serious hardware issue then I would have to revert back to my old hardware until any problems are resolved.

Does anyone here know what will likely happen? I'm just concerned that I might be stuck with a computer that's locked until reactivated and then find that there's a serious problem with the new system.

Answer:Transfer installation to new hardware

Windows 10 will de-activate on the first boot on the new hardware. The only thing you will lose is some of the personalization settings customization and you will start getting nag screens to activate Windows 10.

I have a PC with Windows 7 ultimate installed. I don't have the windows 7 installation disc but it is activated and have the product ID (from the properties windows after right clicking my computer) if it helps.

I would have expected Microsoft to have something that allows this but haven't found one. I've only found an application on Windows 7 called Windows easy transfer, but this only transfers files etc and not the actual Windows 7.

Hope someone can help.

Hello so I have this situation regarding my windows 8.1 machine and how it connects to my Windows Server 2012 machine.

I have my Windows server machine directly connected to the internet on one ethernet port and the other is on a private network.

My windows 8.1 Machine is also on this private network( and whenever I attempt to take files from my Windows server machine using its Local ip address it begins a connection from the Windows Server 2012 machines WAN IP to the local even
though the established connection happened via file sharing by direct network ip address. This connection uses up all the throughput from my router causing every machine on the network to experience lag online.

I also have Windows 7 machines and this issue does not occur when taking files from the server machine as it does it through LAN.

I don't understand how the Windows 8.1 machine can even know my Server 2012 machines IP address or why its deciding to do these file transfers over the internet rather then LAN.

Here's an example since its a very difficult issue to explain.

I have a Private network ( this network reaches the internet from WAN

In this network I have machines Windows 8.1 ( and Windows server 2012 (

Hi there,

due to some complete mishap, I was forced to reinstall Windows XP. Before doing so, I did a system backup, so I could restore all files. The problem is the registry. Due to the new install, many applications will not report as installed and request that I install them anew. But I got a copy of the old registry file (system32\config\software) in the backup. Is there any program that would allow me to edit this file and export those keys I need to a .reg file?

Answer:Progam to transfer selected keys from old registry file to .reg file?

You are asking for more trouble... You should have created an image of the entire hard drive, and restored that image to a "clean" formatted drive. You could spend hours and days editing the registry, but even this wouldn't guarantee success

Hi there,

I am familiar with transferring an Win 7 OS to different hardware (ie, without doing a clean install)
But is it possible to transfer from say 'Windows 7 Enterprise' to 'Windows 7 Ultimate', both 64 bit.

What I am trying to avoid is having to reinstall a zillion programs, that's the goal!

Any ideas?

First post coming up....

I have created a profile snapshot, using Windows Easy Transfer (WET) on a 32bit XP machine and have placed the resulting file on a network drive.
I then went to my new 64bit W7 pc and downloaded what I believed to be the correct WET version - wet7xp_x64. However, when I ran the executable I received a message "The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."
I'm running W7 Pro SP1 and have Sophos installed. However Sophos didn't have a problem on the XP machine so don't think it's that.

Any thoughts anyone?

Hi Andy, welcome to the Seven Forums.

My machine won't boot up unless I disconnect all of the Hard Drives. I still have my two SSD's (RAID 1) that have Windows 7 Professional installed still running fine.

I had one hard drive ST4000NM0023 (4TB) fail (had four of them), and so I replaced two of them with ST10000NM0096 (10TB) drives.

I had software backing up the failed drive, which was my D: (Documents & Program Files) drive. The backup drive F: (D Backup) has now been renamed my D: Drive, and I transferred all of it's files to a new F: backup drive.

I had to copy & paste everything from one folder over to another one of the same name because Windows 7 had automatically installed new folders with the proper icons on them (as per attached image). I had two of "My Pictures", "My Documents", etc.., with one having an icon and one not.

It seems like I had to move my files to the new folders or else my other programs couldn't seem to find the files they needed even though the the folders had the same name, minus the icon.

Copying files from folder to folder was very time consuming, and used all of the systems memory. I would successfully reboot the system after each successful transfer so I could restore the RAM back to 64GB.

I left the largest folder "My Documents" till last. After I successfully transferred the files in this folder over to the new "My Documents" folder with the icon on it, I tried rebooting the system and it would not work. I ... Read more

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:

Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.

The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.
Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me. Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings. Same system language as before. BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. Recently I have noticed a third party application we are using in our company has not been working properly on certain computers.  I contacted the vendor for support, and they said I should check if My Computer under Control Panel-->Administrative
Tools-->Component Services--> Computers has a red line through it.  On all the computers where the app is not working, this line appears indicating that there is a problem with Component Services.
Doing some further research on the internet, I have found several posts that indicate that if a computer was setup using Easy Transfer, that this leads to a "broken" Component Services.
And indeed---every one of the computers with a broken Component Services was one that had been setup for a new user by using Easy Transfer.  The issue with Component Services does not appear on computers that were a "clean" install.

Answer:Component Services (COM+) re-installation or repair: using Easy Transfer to setup a new pc breaks COM+????

Windows Easy Transfer helps you transfer your files, email, pictures and settings when moving to a new PC; Component Services are system components that cannot be transferred by means of Windows Easy Transfer.
You could try using the Windows 7 Recovery feature to perform a sort of "in place re-installation" of Windows 7 that could repair COM+: go to Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Recovery and click the "Advanced recovery methods" link and click
the "Reinstall Windows" option and insert the Windows 7 installation disc.

Hi Guys,

I have a problem installing Windows Vista. The installation process works fine until after the 1st reboot that goes to "completing installation". It completely freezes at that point and after 1 hour or so goes to a black screen where i can see nothing but my mouse pointer.

I just got my laptop 2 days ago and it's brand new Vista compatible. In fact it came with Vista installed and it was working perfectly fine until I decided to reformat it so that I could check if my new hd i tried installing was the main reason for this installation failure.

I saw a post with similar problems explaining that the BIOS was in need to be updated, but my BIOS is up to date and vista compatible.

My laptop specs are as follows:

Inspiron 1720, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache
2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600
17.0 inch Wide Screen UXGA+ TLLCD
Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem,
8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy
Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card
Can someone please help me out! Thanks.

Hi all,

I've just had a computer with a HDD error and have run a repair installation of Windows XP on it. This was successful however when trying to open Office programs and also Access the programs and core files seem to be damaged. I tried doing repair installations on these but errors came up, so I uninstalled Office 2007, cleaned the registry with CCleaner and then tried to install again off the CD. This threw up errors again. The error code is Error 2908. Please provide me with some advice urgently.

Answer:Solved: Installation of Office 2007 throws up errors after repair installation of Win

Uninstalled once again with the Office 2007 clean-up tool and then uninstalled all the "Visual C++ Redistributable" entries in Add/Remove Programs. Installed Office 2007 again and the issue was solved

Question: File transfer ??

What is the easiest way to transfer files from a Mac without a CDRW drive to a PC ??? :dead:

Answer:File transfer ??

If you're running OS X just use an smb connection from the mac side. That's smb://{windows machine}/{share}

If you have problems with that you can always take the easy way out and install AIM on both machines then AIM the files to yourself. You can also try setting up Windows Sharing from the mac and go from the PC to the Mac.

If you're using OS 9 or earlier then it might be a bit harder. To directly connect you'll need something like PC/Mac LAN (third party software that isn't free) or.... again use AIM.

Question: File Transfer

I have just purchased a new home computer from Dell and am trying to transfer files from my old Gateway computer. Both systems are running Windows XP. The computer store sold me the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista but when I attempted to use I received an error message on my old computer that I did not have a Hi-speed USB port installed on my computer and the program would not run. Am I going to encounter the same problem if I purchase a serial PC to PC file transfer cable?

Answer:File Transfer

Hi and welcome.

This should shed some light on the transfer.

I am trying to transfer files from a PC running Windows 98 to a notebook running Windows XP. I almost fiddled with setting up a file sharing network between the two. Almost. The problem is, I don't know much about networking, and I'm told that the two OS's don't go together very well. Does anyone know of an alternate way? It won't recognize a jumpdrive, and it doesn't have a cd burner.

Answer:File Transfer from 98 to XP

You could just take the hard drive out of the 98 pc and get a cheap usb hard drive adapter and plug it into that!!!!

Im looking for a tiny simple program that I would like to use to send files to another computer running the same program. I would put the remote machine IP in there and then send him a file.

its kinda like the MSN file transfer but without logging in, delays

Answer:File transfer by IP

Most Chat programs have file transfer capabilities. But to do it without asking the user first or using some type of authentication is suicide if you ask me.

Question: File Transfer

I just got a new computer ans was wondering what the fastest way to transfer roughly 50gb from one computer to another is...

Answer:File Transfer

If you have a router you could try using AIM.  I did this with a friend, he had to backup some files so I let him use my computers space.  Using AIM you can get really decent speeds (around 9000 kb/s, if you are on the same LAN).  All you need is 2 AIM accounts and the program on each computer.

Question: AOL file transfer

Kestrel13 thought should post this here---thanks K13

No response from AOL so may I ask here?

An ancient Ltop, with failed internet access facilities holds AOL email history.
Personal Filing Cabinet allows viewing on the old Ltop
Can this be transferred to a new Ltop having some new AOL mail history already?

I think?? AOL help pages suggest this is not posible??

If not, will the PF Cabinet or another folder, allow critical mail to be extracted as Word/Wordpad readable files, or whatever, and archived?

Two Ltops, as you may guess, just cannot be easily carried around

Question: File Transfer

Does anybody know of a way to transfer music files from one PC to another without the use of the internet or a USB memory stick? The PC holding the music files is too old to recognise the stick and requires a driver from the internet that cannot be put onto CD for some reason, and to upload the files from an internet address would prove to be too expensive with the limited monthly allowance. I read somewhere that maybe using a router to connect the two PC's might work. Anyone with any ideas would really be saving my day.

Answer:File Transfer

try using a cross-over cable, that will eliminate the need to use a hub. you will, of course need to have a network card (NIC) in each machine. you will also need to share a folder on the machine, and ensure that you have disabled any firewall!good luck!

Question: file transfer

i posted a thread last week under the hardware section, wasnt sure at the time what prob was, i narrowed it down to the hard drive.

i took a 120gb wd out of a gateway system, and when i boot from hd on new system i built, i get black screen. this system i built also has a 40 gig hd, which i have set as primary sata, and have loaded fresh copy of windows on it. that comes up fine.

my question, can i transfer all files from the 120gig hd, including program files?

the 120 gig hd is set as primary on ide channel, 40 gig hd is set at primary on sata channel.

also, the gateway that i got the 120gig hd out of came from gateway with all programs pre installed on it, no back up discs, which is rediculous. im doing this for a friend, and my main concern is transfering quicken 2004 and all its content from the old 120gig hd.

Answer:file transfer

you might be able to make shortcut to some of the programs but for the most part you will need to reinstall your programs
