Some special characters coming out wrong on my computer

Question: Some special characters coming out wrong on my computer

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Windows 7 x64 computer and several keys on my keyboard are misbehaving. When I press the tilde (~), at (@) or hash (#) keys I see different characters.

The characters that I am seeing are as follows -

Initially I installed a Microsoft USB Keyboard, and when I did so some software - in the style of Windows 8 - was installed. As I suspected that the Windows 8 "style" software may be at fault I uninstalled it (however there was no improvement). I then tried a Logitech USB keyboard with the same outcome, and finally tried a Microsoft PS2 keyboard.

Having tried 3 different keyboards with the same effect I am convinced that the issue is with the computer itself.

If anybody has any suggestions on how to fix this they will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Preferred Solution: Some special characters coming out wrong on my computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Some special characters coming out wrong on my computer

Seems like you have a different language keyboard set as the default. See here: http://www.howtogeek.com/121169/how-to-change-your-keyboard-layout-in-windows-8/
Or change it in the Control Panel. You may want to remove any other languages that you don't use and you should reboot.

I am using Microsoft Works word processor program. I need to cut and paste a document into Windows Mail The document contains 'em dashes.' These transfer as the numeral '3/4', rather than an em dash. Any suggestions?

Answer:Special characters

Remove the *em dashes* and replace them with -- instead. That should transfer just fine.

Google Translate would work on my other computer, but that computer stopped working so I have to use this WindowsXP computer. I haven't attempted to use the translator for a while after I got the XP computer up and running, but when I did it would not translate. A lot of the translated characters would show weird symbols like "もしもし" or "さようなら". Any idea on what is causing this? I have also tried different Internet Browsers but the problem still continues, so that means it's probably my computer.

Answer:Special characters won't appear.

Sounds like a language pack needs to be installed.

I'm surprised they show in W7's version of Notepad because I've always seen Notepad as a simple text editor and wouldn't have expected to see anything out of the ordinary in there. In XP, try pasting into Wordpad instead. If that doesn't work, go to Control Panel>Regional and Language and check the Unicode matches your chosen language under the Advanced tab.

Hi, not sure if this is the right place for this.

I live in New Zealand and I have the standard keyboard for my country. I want to add the Euro symbol to my keyboard as I use it a lot and I am not happy with typing Euro54, for example, when I am quoting a price.

Is there something I can add to Windows to make this happen?

Hi all! I just purchased a new Dell with Windows 10. I had a Dell with Windows XP SP3 for ages, and when I made the mistake of updating one of my drivers... Well, it was getting to be time to update... I've a few more grey hairs now.

Anyway, in my old machine, when I modified a file, I would just append a "-2" or "-3" to the file name, ie. File005-02.html. This made searches very easy, as I could just search for -2 and it would list all the files I'd changed. I have my old drive slaved into my new pc, but I can't seem to figure out what Win10 wants to search for just "-2". Win10 gives me all the files with a 2 in the name or inside the file, completely ignoring the dash, which returns a huge number of files.

Is there a quick way to do a simple search for files with a dash, underscore, or other special character in the filename?

Can I turn off the "search inside the file" function, so that it just searches filenames?

Thanks!

Answer:Searching for special characters

To find any file containing -2 search for filename:*-2:

Search parameter filename:* followed by any special character searches for that character in file names. For example searching for filename:*& finds all files with an ampersand (&) in filename, search filename:*_ finds all files with an underscore in file name, search filename:*, finds all files with a comma in file name.

You have to use the number pad. On your laptop you may have a NumLock key which will activate the numbered keypad - for example on mine with NumLock on J=1, K=2, L=3 (the numbers should be marked on the keys).

Sometimes subjects like The Carbon Cycle and Climate Change now need reference to the calculus,- a branch which could be loosely called the mathematics of change. Most people looking it up in texts are put off by the complexity of the Leibnitz notation. What they see is a ontrast to the sheer simplicity of Newton's own, instantly understandable way of writing it down.To say more on this in a Speakers' Corner posting I need to print an x with a dot over the top, also an x with two dots over the top like a German umlaut, preferably with the dots same boldness as the first. I found instruction on how to do it in my Mathematica 5 by Wolfram. It says this... Expression form Overdot is made by key sequence x\&. used inside \!\( ...\). I try for an x with a dot on top and in notepad it prints as \!\(x\&.\)and not x under a dot. The funny character is an ampersand.Questions...Is notepad a valid place to check the appearance of my forum printout? Where with Wolfram have I gone wrong? Is there an easier way to print x overdot and matching double-dot?(For anyone curious they are called Newton's fluxions.) Thanks for any advice. W

1. Make certain that the Num Lock key has been pressed to activate the numeric key section of the keyboard.
2. Depress the Alt key.

Christmas letter time and I use WORKS and a WORKS data base. HOWEVER, I have a Swiss cousin and his/her name has a special (e) character. I can find the character (WORD, INSERT,SYMBOL) but how do I put it in the database or into a WORKS letter?

Ideas?

shortcut

Answer:insert special characters into WORKS

Just startup the Character Map tool, it usually is in the Start>Program>Accessories>SystemTools folder (also you can start up a "Run" window and type in charmap and then click the [OK] button).

In the Character Map you will probably see the type of "e" you are talking about, or or or .
In the Character Map tool, you can press the [Select] button, to have it appear, and then press the [Copy] button to have the contents of the small "Characters to copy" window into your temporary Copy buffer. Then go to your area where you wanted that character or characters, and press the Ctrl and V keys.

At the same time you might notice, down in the bottom right corner of that tool window the Keystrokes you can press to enter the same character without using the CharMap tool. (IE. Alt+0232, or Alt+0233, or Alt+0234, or Alt+0235),
That is where you are typing somewhere, you can hold down the [Alt] key, and then use the keypad to enter that sequence of characters.
In the case it would be 0 then 2 then 3 then 2 then let the [Alt] key up. That character will appear.

Just discovered a nice feature of Windows 8, useful to those using special characters like , , just every once in a while. On big keyboards I was using Alt+number pad, or the Fn+Alt+number pad on smaller laptop keyboards, but hte twist doesn't offer a number pad either via the Fn button or even on the on-screen keyboard. Finding the characters in charmap, then copying is a easy workaround, but I also just discovered that Microsoft seems to have integrated into Windows 8 the nice keystrokes available in previous versions of Word: Ctrl-' then e gives Ctrl-: then a gives Ctrl-^ then o gives etc. It doesn't work everywhere, though. It works in Chrome's browser bar, but not in the dialog box into which I'm typing right now (I had to copy-paste to put the characters in above). Works in Wordpad, but not Notepad. Anyway, hope this post saves some people some time down the line.

Usually you would hold the alt key and use the num pad keys to enter the number codes, then release the alt to get the special character.

we do not have a numpad on the x1, so how do we do this?

I have tried using the normal numbers at the top of the keyboard, does not work.

I am running XP Pro on a Thinkpad R50 and after being attacked by some kind of malware or virus, which disabled taskmgr, all drives, start menu, etc., essentially closing off all normal avenues for fixing the problem, I have arrived at the following point, where I am now helpless:

I can boot into XP, although not into Safe Mode, and when I do, all text is displayed using a special character set. The only area where normal text is displayed is in the C: Prompt and in TweakUI. So, while I have run Spybot S&D and installed Webroot Spy Sweeper, I cannot perform a scan, since I cannot read the menu selections(not sure this would help anyway).

I have read some posts about copying the Fonts Folder contents from another computer, which I tried using a thumb drive and the C: Prompt, but I received an "Access Denied" message for several of the files. I assume this is because they are in use.

I will say that, I would like to simply wipe the drive and do a complete install, but the IBM Access function which allows me to restore the computer to its original state does not come up when I press my IBM Access button and, of course, I do not have install disks since this machine is supposed to have the original contents partitioned away for these situations.

I think if I can repair this font problem and establish a connection with the Lenovo site, I should be able to restore the machine to original.

Any thoughts?

Hi

Can I do a select statement on an Oracle database where I search a table for all records where field x contains special characters(ie it contains chanracters that are not between A to Z(both cases) and 0 to 9? These characters can be in the field also though.

I hope that makes sense.

Paul

Answer:SQL - Search for records containing special characters

This would be very tricky using just SQL; I'd recommend that you write a small program based on a "select fieldX from tableY" cursor and then check each letter of fieldX in turn to see if it is special.

If oracle sql supports a substring type function in the where clause then you could possibly check for a limited number of characters using something along the lines of:

Code:
select
fieldX
from
tableY
where
instr('$',fieldX) = TRUE OR
instr('&',fieldX) = TRUE OR
instr('#',fieldX) = TRUE...
but it would be slow and clunky.

Good morning.

Can anyone point me to a reference source (or provide the info I want) for "Special Characters", in Word 2000?

Along the way, I have picked up some useful key combinations, like ^t = tab, and, ^p = paragraph...

These are so useful for search and replace operations, but these are all I remember from an old Word5 booklet (they still work in W2000...)

There are some provided in the "Special Characters" menu (Insert/Symbol...) but very few.

In particular, I'm looking for a key-combination for non-break paragraph, so I can change the non-breaking ones for breaking ones (and vice versa) in large documents for, or from, web-pages.

Care.

kb-r

Answer:Word 2000 - Special Characters

>> key-combination for non-break paragraph

(I'm guessing here, that) there isn't one.

I made a non-breaking para in a test doc via Format -- Paragraph -- Line & Page Breaks -- Keep Lines Together.

The only evidence of it (back in the doc, with pilcrow on) was a small black square to the left of the 1st line (of the para).

Try stripping out all "non-breaking ones" with CTRL+A, then unchecking Keep Lines Together (click twice if it's greyed out, ie: not all existing paras are non-breaking).

FYI re: Replace, in W2K the Find/Replace dialog has a More button. Click it to access a Special (Characters) button (list).

You can find some shortcuts at http://www.contextures.com/word-tips.htm

Hi Everyone,
Right i'm more hardware orientated so not sure on this one. In word '97 (i know, ancient) my friend is trying to insert special characters and suchlike.
Now when she goes to Insert - Symbol and the windows appears, half of the characters are missing all that is in the space is a small square. Sometimes she can see the symbol/character but on inserting it is either a square or space that is inserted.
I'm no expert but on reinstalling Word the problem is the same, could it be the installed Fonts on the system that are corrupt or does the problem lie elsewhere.
Cheers Guys

The Alt codes require a number pad to work. They don't work on the top row of numbers even on a regular keyboard. If you're using Microsoft Word, you can press Ctrl and one of these ` ' : ~ and then the letter. So Ctrl+~ then n will give you . (Technically it's Ctrl+Shift+`, since you need Shift+` to get ~.) Also Ctrl+Alt+Shift and ! ? to get the upside down versions. http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/word-2007-shortcuts-for-inserting-accents-and-symb.htmlhttp://www.twinning.org.uk/international_characters_in_word.htm Non-Microsoft Office programs probably don't support this so you may have to write there and then copy and paste.

I am running win 98 SE. I have a HP deskjet 1220c. When I use Romanian accent characters in a Word document they appear OK on the screen but they do not print OK. However if I use the HP550c drivers they will print OK but I loose all the extras of the 1220 machine. I have looked on the HP site for updated drivers but cannot see anything to help? Can anyone help me? I am not an expert.

Answer:Printing special characters with HP 1220c

You need to ensure that your printer is operating in graphic mode, that way, what you see on screen is what results on paper. Check the printer control panel for the setting, and adjust accordingly.

Hi,
I have a problem in my Satellite Pro A50-C-1ND (Windows 10).
I can't get polish special characters (alt "z", alt "x", alt "c") - other polish characters are OK.
I have checked all found suggestions - keyboard setup, hotkeys, Synaptics drivers.
I have changed my BIOS drivers (7.60 -> 7.70), but it hadn't help.
Does anybody know if there is a proper version BIOS for my problem? Or other solution.

I have several hundred photos that I am in the process of copying multiple times and renaming them to a different name for uploading to a website. They are all being renamed to product numbers and multiple product numbers can use the same image. I am currently doing this through a .bat file where I use a command to copy and then rename the same .jpg image to different file names.

This works perfectly for product numbers that follow the normal Windows naming convention (i.e. abcdef.jpg, abcdefg.jpg) but there are also product numbers that have a / in the part number. To get this to work and upload via FTP, I save a .jpg by using the character %2f for the /. However, when trying to do that through .bat, it doesn't recognize %2f as being valid. It does copy and rename the file, but drops the %2 when renaming the file.

Here is an example of the command in my .bat file. In the example I am copying SHCSB_L.jpg to 3 different .jpg files (.2C8SHCA%2fB_L.jpg, etc). The .bat file does make 3 .jpgs but .2C8SHCA%2fB_L.jpg is copied as .2C8SHCAfb.jpg since it doesn't recognize the charge %2.

copy "C:\Users\RobPC\Desktop\Photos\SHCSB_L.jpg" "C:\Users\RobPC\Desktop\Photos\.2C8SHCA%2fB_L.jpg"
copy "C:\Users\RobPC\Desktop\Photos\SHCSB_L.jpg" "C:\Users\RobPC\Desktop\Photos\.3C6SHCA%2fB_L.jpg"
copy "C:\Users\RobPC\Desktop\Photos\SHCSB_L.jpg" "C:\Users\RobPC\Desktop\Photos\.3C8SHCA%2fBR_L.jpg"

Is there another way of us... Read more

Answer:Copying and renaming files with special characters using .bat

Seems putting a forward slash in file name is wrong approach. Number one, its not a legal character in a windows file name. The forward slash also looks like the division slash, its likely to screw up things on other platforms as well. I recommend a dash.

Used to place a special character bij holding ctrl or ctrl-shift and selecting like the accent grave (under the esc button), releasing and then pressing the e.
Viola- French "Frere" correctly...
But it stopped working for some reason, only in Word 7 it still works...
Used to work in all software, like my e mail client, in THIS entry box etc.
I know W7 has a complicated solution by copying a character from a list: very tedious.
Keyboard is US Int'l, languages English US and Dutch.
W7 also Dutch.

I have forgotten the simple procedure that is used to embed special characters in a text message. It involves using the backslash followed by the three digit representation of the ASCII character. Perhaps the Esc key is also involved, but I don't remember.

Can anyone advise what the procedure is?

------------------
R. J. Emery

Answer:Embedding Special Characters in a Text Message

Hold the "alt" key and type the three digit number. The number for each character can be found by going to START, ACCESSORIES, CHARACTER MAP. Click on the character you want and the Alt+XXX shows at the bottom of the window.

In Word you can also go to INSERT, SYMBOL and make your selection.

Simply, I can't insert special characters using alt-codes. The ThinkPad X250 does not have a NumLock key and has no numpad. I've tested Fn+Alt using each Alt key and all the combinations of Fn and FnLk available in the bios and on the keyboard to no avail. Copy/Paste from the character map and inserting special characters in Word are cumbersome workarounds. I would greatly prefer to use alt-codes because it's more efficient for frequently inserting characters into formulas. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I have an excel spreadsheet, and I'd like to insert a wingding character - a check mark.
I'd like to set up a macro to do this. But if I copy the checkmark to the clipboard and create the macro to paste the clipboard, this won't work if there is something else in the clipboard. What I need is a way to tell the macro what key combination I'm typing in, is what I want in the cell. The check mark character is way at the bottom of the character map sequence for wingdings. I've gone through all my keys, and there's many more characters between the end of what my keys will create, and that check mark.

Is there a way to generate keys using ALT or something? I tried ALT-1-2-3, but that didn't give me anything. Is the ALT sequence or whatever it is, mapped to ascii? Is that the character code I see at the bottom of the character map window? Is there any correlation of that code to what I'm going to type into my cell to get my checkmark?

Thanks.

Hello there-- what a way to start the day --and thank you in advance.

Like the title says: Windows 7, won't accept a password I set to it for my HP 620, though with a special character; which goes for Kar?s1990 --that's the password. Password that used to work flawlessly in weeks I have had it in use though until today after coming back from my morning routine, to boot the system, to find out every time I try to write "?" to complete the password properly, it instead adds another black dot to the input field in which case the form ends like: Kar'as1990 instead.

The keyboard isn't Spanish though configured, to international English, so to give me the special character without a problem. To throw as well, I had some virus attack yesterday; but swept them immediately. Nevertheless, I don't know if that have something to do with the keyboard no properly writing the a with the accent I'm seeking it to input. And for my surprise, not to my enjoyment; hence today is college's second quarter starts, yet here am I, with important files to deliver in there. Such a beautiful day.

Any idea how do I resolve this? UuU.

I'm a new guy around here so please pardon my ignorance.

I'm having a strange problem. I used to be able to enter ASCII characters anywhere, but recently I can only get the ones I want in msn messenger. In everywhere else, including notepad, they show up as japanese characters. For example, alt+0174 is "registered sign" normally, but nowadays I get a "ッ" when pressing alt+0174. By the way, my current default typing language is Japanese, but I'm using a standard US keyboard. The thing is, I had been typing with IME Japanese from way before this problem started, so I don't this is the cause.

When I checked character map, the keyboard shortcuts for everything seems to have disappeared, and only the japanese characters in fonts like MS Mincho have them. The last time i checked, which was before this problem started, the shortcuts were in all the correct places.

Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I've got a serious problem. My T430 bios allowed me to set a power on and hard drive password containing an exclamation point (!). This was a few months ago. Now when I try to remove the power on and hard drive passwords the bios will not allow me to type the exclamation point character, it is not accepted. The only way I can login now is with my fingerprint reader. Even if I bypass the fingerprint reader and try to type the password directly the exclamation point is not accepted. I really hope someone can help me with this. What has changed Lenovo? All I can think to do is roll back the bios one version at a time, maybe a previous bios allowed special character? I scared though to accidentally reset my fingerprint data in CMOS, if that happens I'll be locked out permanently. I really don't understand how I was able to type this character to set the passwords, and now I can't. Please help!

So I've recently learned how to use Word templates and want to convert many of my work documents to same. I have also learned how to change the file title in the template's properties in order to keep the naming convention standardized from file to file. The problem is that my file naming system makes use of dashes in order to make names more readable. Unfortunately dashes, as well as periods and brackets (both of which I tried as substitutions) both seem to "cut off" the file name. If I try and use the title "label - 5161 Avery - client addresses", for example, using "save as" doesn't bring it up as "label - 5161 Avery - client addresses.docx" - it just brings it up as "label.docx". Is there any separator mark that works in the Word filename or am I going to have to live with less readable filenames if I want to use templates?

I've run the trial version of MS Office 2007 for a month now. Today Powerpoint is doing something strange when I insert special characters such as a Euro charachter, , or a Spanish accent on a letter, .

What occurs is that Powerpoint doesn't move the cursor to after the character and it cuts the space before and after the character so it sticks too close to the character before and after. Basically it bunches up the special character with the before and after characters, and then positions itself in front of the special charachter I just wrote. Then I need to add space before and after the special character I wrote to make it give space around the character.

Any ideas???

I'd have a go at reinstalling it again!
With Office, when you reinsert the original CD, one of the options is usually "repair/modify" the installation.
You can't do any harm with this method.
If no luck you might be best to uninstall Powerpoint and the do a full reinstall again.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to archive that folder onto a CD, but most of the burner programs I've used (Nero, etc.) won't do this, because there are lots of file and folder names with strange special characters in them. I'm assuming this is because these came from Mac filesystems. Is there a way to get rid of all these characters in a batch or global way, a program I can use??

It's hard to describe, so I will also upload a picture.
I noticed this issue about a week ago, basically the up arrow, down arrow, left arrow, right arrow, check-marks, (like I said, "special characters" I don't know what else to call them) are showing up as blank little squares.
On games, online, wherever they appear, they appear as blank little boxes.

I've uninstalled and re-installed my graphics driver already, ran the SCF/scannow (was recommended by someone on windows 7 forum) and that came back without any results.
They also asked about a language pack, but if I do have one installed, I don't know how/where to look for it. (Checked windows updater, didn't see any language packs).
I can't use system restore either, as it jumps from 3 days ago, to 3 months ago.

Anyone got any ideas???

Fyi, the picture I've uploaded is from Elsword. There should be up-arrows (insinuating an increase in a stat) where the annoying red box is.
This is NOT a problem with the keyboard, the arrow-keys on the keyboard work just fine.

Answer:Strange issue with "special characters"?

Just a minor update, I found out that if I send (↑ or ↓) any special characters through something like a IM chat, it appears as those same boxes to me, but the person on the other end see the directional arrows.

I uploaded another picture showing what appears in the chatbox.
Basically, any special characters that I input through a combination of alt + (2 random numbers from the number pad) all show up as boxes.

I hope this might help some one identify the problem.

Did you install the special drivers for the motherboard, bios and others that come on a separate disk? If not then go to either the manufacturers web site or the motherboards web site and download them and run them and after they are installed reboot the computer.

If this does not work try this:

You might have to remove the hard drive from this computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and after it is able to be accessed by Windows on that computer you will have to manually backup all of your important data that you have to another media like CD-R's, DVD or Thumb drive. Then when this is done return it to the original computer as a master drive on the primary IDE cable and do the following:

Wrong characters have just sprouted in some places. Things like instead of ?, for instance.

I've spotted them in two places only : comments included in Properties of Macrium Reflect backup files, and one blog I follow regularly through Firefox.

That's the reason I suspect it's Windows-related and not a Macrium problem. It happened suddenly with no obvious trigger beforehand. It's the sort of bad transcription which often happens in emails.

Now the same blog displays correctly again. Any ideas ?

My daughter's keyboard on Windows XP will not type the @ symbol, it types " instead. Please help me get this corrected. She has changed the language input to English United Kingdom and also tried English USA. None of these changes fixed the problem. All advise will be appreciated, thank you.

A few days ago my Sony TR3 XP SP1 portable began jumbling or mistyping characters entered from the keyboard. It does this in all text areas (Word, shortcut names, file names, messages, dialog forms, etc. The errors ae not random, for instance "5" is always substituted fo "i" - although I have not checked this from session to session. Any solutions or suggestions on how I can correct this problem, or how it might have befallen me would be helpful.
TIA, fallingrock.

Hi tech support, installed windows 64 professional and some characters are not in the right place, @ and " are opposite, # is where the pound character

Answer:[SOLVED] keyboard wrong characters

Either you are in a Non-US English location and have the US layout, or vice-versa
US Shift+2 is @
UK Shift+2 is "

Control Panel | Language and Regional Options
On Regional tab, select the correct language for your location.
Click the Languages tab, then click the Details... button
Select the correct Default input language. This should also install the correct keyboard
Under Installed services, if the incorrect keyboard is shown, click the Add... button
Select the language and layout, and click OK
You can remove the other keyboard if needed. Helps to keep it from getting switched back accidentally.
