Solved: Keyboard displays wrong characters

Question: Solved: Keyboard displays wrong characters

I my laptop keyboard is now displaying incorrect characters after I cleaned it (just a wipe over with some window spray). I have bought a USB keyboard and am currently using that. For example:

Most keys are affected, even the enter/delete and number keys.

Any idea what is happening? Have I completely broken it?

I have a Toshiba satellite A300 installed with Vista. I have had problems with the following:

In order to type "Emily", I have to enter ["][spacebar][Emily]["][spacebar]
Quotation marks only appear after pressing the spacebar or typing in another character. Typing the single or double quotation marks, immediately followed by the letter will result in a special character like:
['][e] - ?
['][a] - ?
['][i] - ?
["][i] - ?
["][e]- ?.....and so on

How do I change this so that the quotation marks appear when I type them and that the special characters disappear? Please, please, please help me!

Hi tech support, installed windows 64 professional and some characters are not in the right place, @ and " are opposite, # is where the pound character
etc, installed three types of keyboard plug and play and USB and ergonomic with software all the same problem, any advice what to do???

Answer:[SOLVED] keyboard wrong characters

Either you are in a Non-US English location and have the US layout, or vice-versa
US Shift+2 is @
UK Shift+2 is "

Control Panel | Language and Regional Options
On Regional tab, select the correct language for your location.
Click the Languages tab, then click the Details... button
Select the correct Default input language. This should also install the correct keyboard
Under Installed services, if the incorrect keyboard is shown, click the Add... button
Select the language and layout, and click OK
You can remove the other keyboard if needed. Helps to keep it from getting switched back accidentally.

Any help to correct this problem would be appreciated.
I don't know if this is a hardware issue or a software issue. Whenever I press certain letters I get a numeric stroke. For example:

The only reason I'm able to type this is because I've connected another keyboard up to the laptop.

Answer:Solved: Fujitsu laptop keyboard showing wrong characters

Most likely you have some kind of number lock feature on. It's so you can use the letters as you would a number pad on a standard keyboard.

Try to find a key on your keyboard labeled "Num Lock" and press it (you may have to hold down something like an "Fn" key while pushing the Num Lock button).

Hi - I'm using Vista Business.

When using an office program, certain characters do not show up correctly. For instance the '@' symbol (shift+2) shows up as quotes.

Here's the strange part. I can type normally in notepad. This suggests that there's a setting in Office??

In either case, I tried changing Vista's language settings by right clicking the taskbar -> toolbars but the 'languages' toolbar does not appear. In other words, i don't have any other languages installed.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Wrong Keyboard Characters

Shift+2 for quotes is UK (maybe others)

I have just had a look in Excel and you can change the language for office (excel in this case)

Hey, i run XP and am having an issue with my keyboard not inputting the correct character on certain keys when shift is held down. This same thing happens when i use either keyboard a basic PS/2 and a USB Steelseries Merc Stealth which i install drivers for.
Some examples of the problem are pressing shift + 2[top row] should input " but inputs @ : Shift + 3 should input pound sign but instead inputs # : shift + @ should input @ but instead inputs "
I have tried removing all my drivers through divice manager and rebooting letting xp reinstall ect, removing all my usb keyboard drivers and software and reinstalling ect still the same issue with both keyboards, exactly. At first i thought that because i am based in the UK and my USB keyboard is from the US that was the issue but its the same problem with my standard PS/2 keyboard which got me thinking that it can only be somthing related to XP or some settings in XP.
Any help as always welcome, thanks in advance.

Well, my computer is an Acer Aspire PC running on Windows Vista Home Premium, but when I try to type things, my keyboard will type in a completely different symbol. For example, in most programs, instead of an apostrophe, Ill get è instead, or if I want to use square brackets, Ill get ^^ç. It wont happen in Microsoft word, but it will happen when Im on the internet, or using the search function in my computer.

Here's what the Keyboard driver window keeps telling me:

Under general tab:

HID Keyboard device

Device Type: Keyboards
Manufacturer: (Standard keyboards)
Location: on User human interface USB device
Device status: This device is working properly.

Under Driver Tab:

If anyone out there could help me, It would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I tried FN+ F11 or F10 and I did nto work. What could it be?

Any help? Has anyone had the same problem?

Answer:Keyboard types wrong and weird characters on Tecra A2

sounds like a serious hardware problem. You can try the following to check if just the internal keyboard is making some trouble or your machine is malfunctioning: just connect a external keyboard (ps2 or usb) and check if you got the same error.

But nowadays you should bring your machine to a local authorized service partner for a hardware checkup because I think that your keyboard is defective and the hardware components of your machine should be checked.

Here?s a link to find the nearest local service point:

Good luck

Hi all,

I am having serious problems with my keyboards. when I press some letters like 'g b y t a' its generates wierd codes.

g = Dg GH`B'GN#
a = AS
y = YUI
b = NMB,N

these keep changing all the time, sometimes it just generates unending code and I have to hold down the backspace key for it to stop.

I have changed my keyboard from the original one that had a serial port to a new USB type but this has not solved the problem. Now I have both plugged in and have to use both to type as the keys that work on one do not work on the other.

I have started my computer in safe mode and done a full virus check, using mcafee and avg, i have even used housecall which is an online antivirus but this has not solved the problem.

I have changed my regional setting from UK to Us and back but this does not solve the problem.

I got remapping software anthis shows that all the keys are mapped correctly.

I have downloaded every microsoft patch but still with no joy.

I need some help please. frustrating typing with two key boards. appologies for gramatical errors, I just want to send this.

Answer:Keyboard, characters mixed up and wrong code generation

The 2 areas that affect keyboard mapping are;

Keyboard settings are in Control Panel-> Keyboard
Language settings are in Control Panel-> Regional and Language Options

Use only one keyboard at a time - a stuck key will/may cause both to appear errant.

A System Restore is also a possibility if this event had been recent.

Answer:Tecra A9 - Keyboard "unlocks" and wrong characters are typed

To be honest I have no idea what you are talking about.
If your keyboard layout does not match with the keyboard language, then you should change this and should add new language.

In such case you will be able to switch between languages using the shortcuts SHIFT+ALT

Of course you can also delete the other languages. In such case the SHIFT+ALT will not functions.

I have an excel spreadsheet, and I'd like to insert a wingding character - a check mark.
I'd like to set up a macro to do this. But if I copy the checkmark to the clipboard and create the macro to paste the clipboard, this won't work if there is something else in the clipboard. What I need is a way to tell the macro what key combination I'm typing in, is what I want in the cell. The check mark character is way at the bottom of the character map sequence for wingdings. I've gone through all my keys, and there's many more characters between the end of what my keys will create, and that check mark.

Is there a way to generate keys using ALT or something? I tried ALT-1-2-3, but that didn't give me anything. Is the ALT sequence or whatever it is, mapped to ascii? Is that the character code I see at the bottom of the character map window? Is there any correlation of that code to what I'm going to type into my cell to get my checkmark?

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro M10 that has broken down. When the system starts up, the Toshiba logo seems to have a few dots here and there. When it displays messages on the screen during startup, the characters seems to be corropted. For example the message "Insert system disk", the I and T of the word insert seems to be from the upper half of the ASCII characters. The S from system is the "less than or equal to sign". and The k of the work disk is {. I have already done the following:

- tried booting with one of my two memory card and I tried for both memory cards.
- swapped my memory card.
- reloaded windows and Linux

I did drop the computer once but has worked OK for a month after I dropped it. I have deleted the operating systems but now it seems to have problems loading an operatig system from CD (CD works OK). Anyone has any idea what is wrong?

Answer:Satellite Pro M10 displays currupt characters on startup

You have suggested that the notebook dropped down two times.
Well, you can try to connect the external monitor to the notebook to find out if it?s a screen fault or a graphic card malfunction.

You have problems with the OS installation? Maybe there is something wrong with the drive and the HDD. But possibly only looses connection is responsible for the problems. Check the pins.

It?s possible that the screen and the other devices was damage because of the dropping down.

I added 128MB/PC100 to an open slot on my Dad's Hewlett Packard and now the monitor displays some characters as black boxes, purple colored when they should be black, missing letters in the middle of a word, and sometimes when you click on a desktop icon, a ghost of the icon will follow the pointer around the screen. Pull out the memory card and all is well again. The only other card on the MoBo is a PC100/64MB. ANY help would be appreciated. The 'puter is running Win 98SE with an AMD-K6 333.
Happy New Year!

Answer:Added more RAM and now monitor displays missing/distorted/colored characters.

How many memory slots have you got ? You might have to add in pairs ie 2 times 64MB or 2 times 128MB. Is it exactly the same type of memory ?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. The problem seems to be with t... Read more

hi bijoy3d,
Welcome to the Forums.
What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

I bought this awesome, lovely and exquisite piece of technology innovation in August 2014.I have come to India and everyone loves it.Everything was fine until the last Saturday morning when I was typing an email. I got on a phone call for a while and it went in sleep mode. Pretty normal. I concluded the call and touched the space bar expecting the normal, quick wake up and the login screen. The login screen came up alright, but the password box was already filled. I tried to use backspace to clear the box and I missed a heartbeat! Nothing seemed to happen. So I force shut it holding the power button and after a minute bring it up again. Same scene! This has continued. I am going to be in India for a few months. So I checked with Lenovo service centers calling them. And I learn this model is not supported in India. My warrantee is valid, but of no use!I go to a local dealer, to no avail. I have lost my primary way of communication. Difficult to live this way. Right? SO I buy a toolset (expensive!), open the back cover and disconnect the keyboard cable. I put the cover back and start using it as a tablet only.It is serving me for now, but cant do this for long. What may be wrong? My friend is travelling to the US (San Jose) in a couple of weeks. Should I send it with him? Will Lenovo give me a replacement keyboard or whatever part? I have been a computer professional for 30+ years and used more than 6 laptops so far. Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Keyboard continuously floods characters in the keyboard buffer

I have this same problem but with my Y510p. It floods the 'Q' character.
The only solution which seems possible is a keyboard replacement (unless the connecting port is damaged, which is highly unlikely). I have ordered a keyboard and it is on the way.
As for your scenario, I would say that if you friend is going to be in US for more than 2 months then it is fine to send it with him for repairs. You could also order a keyboard online and replace it yourself (I ordered on ebay).
Check your manual on lenovo website for supported keyboard part number.
Tip -
To disable a malfunctioning keyboard like yours, you can either disconnect it physically (like you did)
You can go into Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards
Select the laptop keyboard and manually install a wrong keyboard driver.
This way the keyboard wont be recognized and wont work.

Wrong characters have just sprouted in some places. Things like é instead of ?, for instance.

I've spotted them in two places only : comments included in Properties of Macrium Reflect backup files, and one blog I follow regularly through Firefox.

That's the reason I suspect it's Windows-related and not a Macrium problem. It happened suddenly with no obvious trigger beforehand. It's the sort of bad transcription which often happens in emails.

Now the same blog displays correctly again. Any ideas ?

This is a problem I have that is 'solved' by rebooting my computer, but arises again after some time when I am in Word and some posting forums (not this one). I have a new laptop with Vista Home. When I am typing, there comes a point that the "?" key instead outputs ?, a similar problem happens with other keys, such as the quotations key. Then I reboot and everything is fine again. It is extremely odd (and annoying), and frustrates me becuase I need to write a paper and do not want to have to keep rebooting!!

Sounds like Regional settings might be acting up
Go to the Control panel and open Regional settings. Click on the keyboard tab. How many language options do you have?
Maybe even change it and change back

I recently reinstalled Windows XP after reformatting my HDD [new mobo, etc.], I kinda rushed the installation. I left the language and regional settings as English (US) [I'm English (UK)], I've went into Language and Regional Settings in Control Panel and made the amendments for both drop-down boxes, restarted my PC, and checked the settings again. They seem OK ["English (United Kingdom)" and "United Kingdom"] in Control Panel, but it's still treating the keyboard as English-US. I get @ for " and vice versa... Any ideas on this? [Any other info needed to help explain?]

Googling it keeps returning answers saying adjust "Regional and Language Options", which I have. Any ideas or directions appreciated.

Did you install the special drivers for the motherboard, bios and others that come on a separate disk? If not then go to either the manufacturers web site or the motherboards web site and download them and run them and after they are installed reboot the computer.

If this does not work try this:

You might have to remove the hard drive from this computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and after it is able to be accessed by Windows on that computer you will have to manually backup all of your important data that you have to another media like CD-R's, DVD or Thumb drive. Then when this is done return it to the original computer as a master drive on the primary IDE cable and do the following:

I have had Japanese installed on my language bar for some time, but lately when I try to use it, the wrong characters appear when I type in the Romaji. I tried deleting the Japanese IME and re-adding it, but it made no difference. Could this be caused by a virus? How can I fix it? It still works fine on my laptop, it's only my desktop that is affected.

Hi nfarrier, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Yes, it can be virus. Did you made any changes on the PC recently?

As mentioned by Yard Dog, run Malwarebyts to scan for malwares. Run antivrus, and do SFC/SCANNOW to check for any errors.

I have just purchased an NB200-10G and some of the keys or key combinations do not produce the correct character. eg,
Shift + " (quotation marks) produces @
Shift + £ produces #
Shift + @ produces "
pressing # only gives \
Shift + ~ gives I

It can be corrected in Microsoft Office Word (but not in Notepad or Wordpad) by pressing shift + alt - but it is very irritating. Can i do anything to correct this permanently.

HI all,
I recently had to replace the hard disk in my Packard Bell PC. I lost the original Windows XP Home installation. I had to install a new version of XP Home OEM ( decided to stay with XP as I use several fairly old programs, which, I am told probably would not work with Vista). Can anybody tell me how to change to the English setting? I am getting @ for ", and vice versa. Also, I cannot find any Euro symbol.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Windows 7 x64 computer and several keys on my keyboard are misbehaving. When I press the tilde (~), at (@) or hash (#) keys I see different characters.

The characters that I am seeing are as follows -

Initially I installed a Microsoft USB Keyboard, and when I did so some software - in the style of Windows 8 - was installed. As I suspected that the Windows 8 "style" software may be at fault I uninstalled it (however there was no improvement). I then tried a Logitech USB keyboard with the same outcome, and finally tried a Microsoft PS2 keyboard.

Having tried 3 different keyboards with the same effect I am convinced that the issue is with the computer itself.

If anybody has any suggestions on how to fix this they will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Hello everybody,

I found that my XP (English version) is not able to put non-English characters in correct order, so that my Thai dictionary doesn't work properly.

Here are some details.

In Thai language, some vowels are on the left side of consonant, but when ordering those words with vowels on the left side, we don't consider the vowel is the first character, but XP does. I need to introduce 3 Thai characters in order to illustrate this problem more clearly.

ก is the first consonant in Thai language, ข is the second, ไ is a vowel which is on the left side of consonant, such as ไก and ไข. Now we put these 2 consonants and 2 words in proper order, it's supposed to be 1.ก 2.ไก 3.ข 4.ไข, but what XP does is 1.ไก 2.ไข 3.ก 4.ข

Is the any solution for this? Thanks in advance.

P.S. In the shop where I bought that dictionary, it works pretty well, but I didn't notice what system is was.

I've already restored windows fonts through the control panel. I've renamed the calc.exe.mui and nothing. I've even tried downloading an english version posted in these forums, but it didn't work. Even the language remained the same.

Just built a machine from a whole load of components I bought some time ago and never got around to building til now. Built to play some games but not real cutting edge ones.

It ran for the first few days OK on internet etc running Firefox 8 no hassles watching TV programs online etc no issues.

Yesterday after I was happy it was stable I installed the first game Assassin's Creed Director's Cut.onto the second HDD. The first HDD has only the OS and Firefox on it.

At first it ran OK then the assassin started spinning on the spot after about 10 or 15 mins running. After that the PC switched off. After re-starting and entering the game again, after a few minutes it shut down again and did this a few times. I went looking for the most up to date graphics card driver I could find for the card I had installed (see below) the manufacturer's site was a little confusing but I think I installed the most recent driver I could find.

Then today after starting and playing the game for a few minutes the character started spinning again and the machine switched off again. I went looking to an alternative source for a driver and trid to download one and got this message:

Did you put the correct 80-prong ATA-100/133 cable on?
As far as I know, a BIOS only recognizes the combined size of the first 4 partitions of any HD, so if your 5th partition is about 15GB that explains dhe difference.

Uninstall Chrome,
Delete C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Google
run CCleaner to make sure you got it all
Then re-install Chrome and see if that worked.

I have a problem with which monitor shows an activated program.

For some reason, I have had a very small number of programs that when activated, it displays on my TV screen (2nd. option) without selecting this to happen.

When this happens, I minimize the program and drag it to the computer monitor and that seems to take care of it. But I don't know why this is even happening.

Tthe program for activating PPS with Microsoft Office PowerPoint is one that I can not correct by dragging it to the computer monitor. The reason being, that there is no way the PPS program can be "minimized" so that I can drag it.

Can someone help please?

Answer:Program displays on wrong monitor

When the program is open on the 2nd monitor, drag it to the 1st monitor and then close the program. When you open the program again, it should now open on the first monitor.

Solved the problem myself but unfortunately I am not quite sure how I did it!!! Solution lay with the Nvidia display controls.

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Nvidia Quadro
Samsung 2693HM (Main VDU) & HPLP2065 (left hand secondary VDU connected via VGA/Converter/HDMI cable)
Wacom Intuos 3 tablet
Previous setup as above except secondary VDU was a Hanns G. - worked perfectly.
Now I have cursor problem.

Previously as I moved pen from right to left, the cursor moved from the right to the left of the main monitor and at the mid point or thereabouts of the tablet the cursor moved from the main monitor across to the left hand monitor and continued from right to left. Now if I do the same, the cursor starts on the right of the secondary monitor, moves across to the left and at the mid point of the tablet position, it appears on the right of the main monitor ad continues moving left. One solution is to move the secondary monitor to the right hand side of the main one, but I don't want it there!
I have tried switching the display configuration on the Nvidia display setup area and also switching the primary monitor but neither solves the problem.

I'm not sure if this requires an adjustment on the display controls or the tablet ones. Also, why does it not work now when it was fine with the other monitor. All that has changed is the monitor and the need for a VGA to DMI convertor.

Answer:Dual displays, wrong tablet orientation

Easiest way to get the monitors to "change" sides is to do it in the Windows display properties. It is as easy as dragging and dropping one monitor to the other side,

Likely what you ended up doing in the Nvidia control panel.

I've tried searching all over the net, but I wasn't able to find anyone reporting this issue (or, maybe I just couldn't find the right key word to describe this issue). The problem is, when I have multiple tabs in IE10, it begins to have this weird issue where if I click on a different tab to switch to that page, IE10 still displays the page I was on before. The funny thing is, if I move my mouse over the page, the location of the links, etc are actually of the new page I switched to. If I view page source, it also confirms that I am in fact on the right page, so it's just the display that's wrong. I already tried resetting IE10, but the problem came right back. I don't have this issue with any other browsers. If anyone knows any fix for this, please let me know. Please don't tell me to use different browsers, as I don't consider that a solution (I already have firefox, and I have a reason why I want to keep using both IE and firefox on my PC, chrome is out of the window d/t its sneaky privacy invasion features).

Thank you,

Answer:IE10 displays wrong page on various tabs

That does seems to be an interesting issue one which I haven't encountered "yet" lol,
Open ie,
Use Alt+TO or gear symbol and Internet options,
Delete browser history Settings button,
Cache and databases section and Uncheck allow databases, Close.
Delete browser history and see if the issue returns.
Just to add when you delete your browser history Uncheck the top box then delete.

I have recently bought a G50-70 from ( this is the laptop : ) and after installing the drivers provided by the DVD that came with the laptop I have noticed a major lack of performance in games that used to run smoothly on my 2007 PC. I started to worry about it and I looked on the internet for a solution. Some users recommended that I should temporarely disable the integrated card via device manager and "force" the laptop to use the dedicated card. I tried that and I have noticed that device manager showed me that I have the HD5800M video card, which is totally wrong, because this product hosts the R5 M230 video card, so I clicked update drivers in device manager and after the update, the correct video card showed up. So I disabled the integrated card and ran an old game (Battlefield Bad Company 2). Ultra lag striked on the settings that the integrated card managed farely well. After I quit the game, an error from AMD Catalyst showed up and said that the video driver for AMD card is not installed. What to do now, because after reinstalling the drivers via AMD Catalyst the device manager tells me that I have the HD5800 AGAIN!

I am having a problem with Internet Explorer displaying the wrong pages. Sometimes, like 5 percent of the links I click on will take me to the wrong page. The strange thing is that when this happens it ALWAYS takes me to a page that I have previously visited instead of the page I was trying to reach. For example when I click on a link to ebay it will take me to google instead. Strangest of all, the address of the page that I was TRYING to get to will be in the address bar rather than the address of the page that is actually displayed.

I have deleted all cookies and temporary internet files. I have also ran Ad-aware 6 as well as Spybot both with the latest reference files. I have also purged my cache, cookie and history folders with PurgeIE. I use PC-Cillin 2000 with the latest pattern files. I have also ran Stinger. I am running XP home with IE 6.

I have posted the results of HijackThis below:

Hello guys, My oldies notebook Satellite Pro 410 CDT, with BIOS updated to v6.20, which I am trying to install as SO w98se. I have a few problems that I do not manage to solve:

1. I have formatted a HDD of 4.3 GB of a libretto 70 CT, in two partitions one of 814 Mb and other one with the rest. In the partition D, the major one I have copied all the drivers of 410 as well as w98se to proceed to his installation. These options I did it in the tower Pc with Partion Magic and the explorer of Windows XP.

Reinstalled the HDD in 410 CDT, the screen shows me the following message:

However much I have looked in manual there is not done any reference to this message, can they say to me that it happens?.

2. When I format the HDD in another Pc I must reserve an empty space in in order that it is a system do his copies in way of hibernation?. That is to say, in the Libretto 70 and 100, they save themselves 32 MB at the end of the HDD. All that I owe resevar for 410 cdt and in that place?.

3. When I start the portable one with a bootdisk of windows 98 without ramdisk, which allows me to load the most basic thing in MSDOS, I verify that the keyboard does not act as owes, that is to say, some keys they show on screen characters that do not correspond to them, others prove to be two or three simultaneously, others do not do anything supporting the fixed cursor, for example, if tou... Answer:Broken keyborad on Satellite Pro 410cdt? Wrong characters are shown

I?m not 100% about the point one because I have never seen such error message but I have investigated in the internet and somewhere has suggested that such error can appears because the booting partition was not activated or not active.

2.) I don?t think that you need to reserve any place on the HDD for the hibernation mode. In the hibernation mode all data and settings are saved to the local file. It?s a part of the OS.

3.) For me it?s not easy to say if the keyboard is wrong or only the software environment cannot detect the functionality of the keyboard buttons properly. To be sure if the keyboard works properly you should test it in the Windows OS

A client using a billing and inventory program that I wrote for him a number of years ago, is having some problems since
upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 Home Premium.

The main problem now is that when printing his quotes and invoices, Windows is using the wrong character set.
Instead of getting single and double line boxes and frames, it is printing completely different characters.

They are all graphics characters above 128 ASCII commonly used for both screen and print in DOS programs.
There is no problem with screen display of the same characters.

Isn't there a way to make it use the intended character set when printing?
I don't have Windows 7, so I can't do any testing on my own equipment.

Don't bother with suggestions of 'a different program'.
This is a custom application that he paid $$$ for and I spent hundreds of hours developing.

Answer:Windows 7 prints wrong graphics characters from a DOS database program

Not unless you can find a printer that allows IBM Character set, such as a LaserJet. I would suggest moving them into something like QuickBooks, or design the program to run in Access, if you want full use of the printer. BTW, there is no such thing as DOS anymore. DOS died with the end of Win98 & Win NT.

My laptop froze to a blank screen. When rebooted it first displayed a black background with a light concentration of blue and white shaded blocks in strips vetically down the screen - like a tetris game.

As it went through the loading of Windows in the background, the display turned to a green-yellow lines on black bakground verticlly down the screen - like the Matrix screen from the movie of the same name. The next display was black and white barcode blocks also vertically. It started a repair-recovery action which eventually failed and would not go any further. I went on in safe mode with the same displays happening. I disabled the NVidia GeForce GO 7600 graphics card to set it to the standard VGA.

I can now log all the way onto and use it in the normall manner but visually it is the same as described above through the boot porcess, but adding blue rain like verticle lines down the screen - like Vista is behind the window of wet coloured glass. White pages such as a Notepad windoe has pink verticl lines down it but the text is readable but everso light in shading.

Everything seems to work fine, browser, web surfing, email, but the display is shot. I connected external monitor but got same. I tried to check BIOS but is all displayed in coloured tetris squares making it hard to see what to do. I upgraded the BIOS from v3.40 to v3.90 successfully but no change to display. I ran diagnostics and Graphics card failed.

I guess the graphics card is a goner and I need a... Read more

Answer:Qosmio G - Graphic card displays wrong screen

Hi Rabbitoh,

To be honest it?s really strange to say something if you don?t post your exact notebook model?

But normally if an external monitor shows the same picture, it means that the internal display is ok and the problem is caused by the graphic card and it needs replacing or with other words the whole mainboard.

So you should contact an authorized service provider. The guys can order a new mainboard and replace it for you. :)

I am using xp media edition. Ever since daylight savings time started the guide is off by one hour. I have reset the guide and I thought that last night it might have corrected itself because this was the original night that daylight savings usually occurs.

Hi everyone, this is going to be a bit long, so I thank you in advance for your patiente. :-) My issue of the boot loop (explained in a previous post) was fixed by changing the motherboard. I'm happy to have my x120e up and running. Now I have a really annoying problem. Upon receiving the laptop, I immediately updated to the latest bios firmware.Later I found out that after installing the new mobo the at the support center they did not updated the product type, an serial number of the machine in BIOS. So the thinkvantage toolbox was displaying a wrong product id: qqqq2ru. As you can imagine the system can't be automatically updated because there is no product with this id number. After hours of googling I found a copy of Hardware maintenance disk (v1.78, please do not ask me how I did it) and I managed to update the BIOS with the correct Product and SN. I thought, oh, what e relief. This until restarting the computer. The toolbox now is displaying the correct SN but the same wrong Product id: qqqq2ru I thought maybe I should reinstall the system to factory default. Did it, but the result is the same. My product id in TV toolbox is set to qqqq2RU although in bios I see the correct model, in my case 05962RU. Can anyone shed some light on what the problem might be? Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance abvasili

Answer:X120e-Thinkvantage toolbox displays wrong product id

Ok, I solved this.  Aparently, the cause of the problem was flashing the new bios without first writing the info in BIOS (Serial Number, Product type etc) I downgraded the bios to an older version and cleared the product type. Voila. ThinkVantage Toolbox recognized my Product id, SN etc. After that, I updated the bios to the latest version and now everything is fine. Hope this will help someone with the same problem in the future. Thanks for reading. abvasili

I have the Gateway NE56R12u 15.6-Inch Laptop
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

A few drops of water was spilled onto my keyboard (I don't think the water got down into the laptop... as far as I could tell the water landed on top of the keys, but I could be wrong) and when I went to clean it, I didn't think ahead and turn it off before cleaning up the spill. So many keys were pressed and now the keyboard is not functioning correctly. When I press the majority of the keys, they will either add other letters/symbols, or they will trigger Windows shortcuts.

As an example..
B = "B (it also brings up the right click menu) (this will also bring up this: € symbol as well as times)
O = 7i7o0
L = *L{YK

M = HM

k= yk*

j = brings up googlechrome downloads

i = takes curser to the start of the text

The space key types b ' and brings up the right click menu.

7 brings up the "open file" shortcut

and so on

Some keys are working properly: a c d e f g q r s t v w x z

I browsed google a little to see if anyone else has had this problem. A big fix was pressing the FN button and the NumLock at the same time. That didn't work. Which, I doubted it would since my laptop has a full keyboard.

Is it possible that it's stuck on some sort of sticky keys or toggle keys setting?

I don't know if this is a software or a hardware issue, but using the onscreen or an exter... Read more
