Wrong alphabetical order for Non-English characters

Question: Wrong alphabetical order for Non-English characters

Hello everybody,

I found that my XP (English version) is not able to put non-English characters in correct order, so that my Thai dictionary doesn't work properly.

Here are some details.

In Thai language, some vowels are on the left side of consonant, but when ordering those words with vowels on the left side, we don't consider the vowel is the first character, but XP does. I need to introduce 3 Thai characters in order to illustrate this problem more clearly.

ก is the first consonant in Thai language, ข is the second, ไ is a vowel which is on the left side of consonant, such as ไก and ไข. Now we put these 2 consonants and 2 words in proper order, it's supposed to be 1.ก 2.ไก 3.ข 4.ไข, but what XP does is 1.ไก 2.ไข 3.ก 4.ข

Is the any solution for this? Thanks in advance.

P.S. In the shop where I bought that dictionary, it works pretty well, but I didn't notice what system is was.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: Alphabetical Order

Alright, this may sound like a dumb question with a very simple solution, but I cant seem to find it, and its driving me nuts. I have windows XP professional installed on my computer. One day, everything just decided it wanted to be organized in alphabetical order. I dont ever remember changing any option to cause this. Everything in every folder is organized alphabetically, and so is the start menu. After I move things into the order i like, they are back to alphabetical order after any time i reboot the computer. I've looked everywhere for an option checked where i may have caused this, but i cant seem to find it. I've even scanned for spyware adware, everything. Can someone please help me out? thanks.

Answer:Alphabetical Order

Try this. In Windows Explorer, select a folder and organize it in whatever order you want (date, size, etc.). Then click on Tools, Folder Options, View, and then click Apply to All Folders. See if that works.

I like my folders and files arranged in alphabetical order except I do not like the fact that when I copy new files into a folder, they go immediately into alphabetical order. I prefer they go in at the end of the list and stay that way until I click View> Refresh or when I exit and re-enter the folder.

In other words, I want it to work like it did in Windows XP.

Is there a way to fix this?

Answer:Alphabetical order in folders is sometimes a problem

I doubt if there is any way to rectify this as Windows 7 by default will do exactly as you have found. All I can suggest is that you create a new folder in the list just for new entries.

Other suggestions may follow.

Here is one way to do it for Word 2007 or 2010 (it also works for me just now in Word 2016 on Win10, but it should also work on Win7) -- the items need to be either bulleted or numbered, I think:

Hello,

I normally organize and rename the shortcuts in the start menu (in the folder ...\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu) to shorter or more memorable names. However, my start menu is not in alphabetical order anymore.

For example: I've renamed "Adobe Photoshop CC 2015" to "Photoshop" and "Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015" to "Premiere". So, I expect that the programs would be listed under "P" in my start menu, but, they're still on top of my menu, renamed, under the "A" letter.

This process has always worked, until now. Is there something I can do to fix it?

Thank you in advance,

Answer:Start menu not in alphabetical order

Hi, I think the problem is that the Win 10 start menu does not behave in the same way as traditional start menus in respect of legacy folder-based menus we're used to.

Many of my 'normal' entries in my start menu aren't even present in the Win 10 start menu. Subfolders (E.g. the folder created by a program I install containing its shortcuts) aren't even shown in the Win 10 start menu.. all the shortcuts under one letter in the start menu are linear- extracted from their folders producing this sort of absurdity:
That's why I use Classic Shell- which works as I expect.

I've got 25 separate files of cartoons in a directory that are listed alphabetically, naturally. I want to place them in another temp directory in my preferred order. I suppose a DVD burning program will let me do that before I burn the files to DVD. However, I'd like to have them in my preferred order on my HD. Previously, I would have to laboriously put the numbers 1. 2. 3. in front of each title to have them listed in my preferred order.

Is there a way to force Explorer not to list them in alphabetical order in that temp directory that I want to move them to, without putting the numbers 1.(filename) 2.(filename) 3.(filename) etc. before each file name to have them in my preferred order and not listed alphabetically by file name?

Answer:List files not in alphabetical order?

File systems are essentially built on a database and as such Windows can arrange based on multiple properties such as name, date, or file type but you can't just specify a display order without adding a prefix. To my knowledge Windows can only arrange based upon information that it can pull from the database.

With all plugged in assign each a drive letter of your choice using Disk management (leaving gaps if necessary for card reader slots).
Next time you reboot or plug in a drive it should keep the same drive letter. (USB drives must always be plugged into the same slot as when the drive letter was assigned.
I have a drive I have assigned as P: (Verbatim)
Internal drives C - H with G as DVD drive with even without drives I J K l M switch on if I power up the Verbatim drive it will always be assigned the letter P

Until about 6 weeks back all folders and file names appeared in alphabetical order when I opened a program or looked in My Documents.  Now they are never in alphabetical order.  Sometimes the last one used is at the bottom and each one opened after that will go to the bottom.  I can go to View, click Icons, then go back to Lists and they will be in alphabetical order until I close the program and go back to it again, then they are out of order again.  The same will happen if I have them in order under List-Icons.  This happens in QuickBooks, My Documents, Word, Excel and all other programs.  It is very time consuming to find the correct folder or file when I never know where it might appear.

On my HP laptop, using XP Home/SP1 and IE 6, I am unable to get the Links on the Address Bar to stay in the order I arrange them in. They revert to alphabetical order even when I rearrange them to "Sort by name" as soon as I close down IE and/or reboot the PC. I have modified many of the names so that the ones I use the most will come to the top after doing a "Sort by name".

Yes, I could rename them so that they would pop to the top in an alphabetical order also, but I shouldn't have to.

On my office PC with XP Home/SP1 and IE 6, I can arrange the links in any order I want them and they will stay that way unless I manually change them.

I've checked the settings on both PC's and haven't yet figured out what might be different.

I am aware that to get IE to hold a change you open one window, make the changes, and then close it down. It should hold after reopening IE up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi Was wondering if someone can guide me in the right direction.

The problem I am having is I can sort it out in alphabetic order but the changes dont reflect onto the main form.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Kind Regards

Ranj

Answer:Solved: Alphabetical order in combo box MSACCESS.

Use a query (not the table) to sort the pupils and use that to provide the data for the Combo. Once you have created the query you can replace the current data source with it in the Combo's Properties. If you want the main form to be in alphabetic order as well use the same Query to supply it's data.

I have recently acquired a refurbished Microsoft Surface Pro1.
It runs well, except one nagging matter which I am unable to resolve.
Will appreciate greatly if someone shows me the answer.

The issue is simple : the contents listed in Programs and Features are in alphabetically "descending order"..... from Z to A.
I cannot, for the life of me, find an option to list them from A to Z.
Not a big deal. Just bugging me that I cannot change that.
My screenshot.......

Answer:Microsoft Surface Pro1/Programs & Features list /alphabetical order

Never mind.
I must be getting senile. Windows 101. And it took me a day to fix it.

My sincere apology for wasting your time reading this.

At my job I have tons of folders and I need them to be in order by date. Whenever I browse the folder normally it shows up in order by date, like I want it to. But when I load or save a file it is _always_ in alphabetical order - which is the biggest pain in the butt because then I either have to find whatever folder I am looking for or change it back to details then to ordered by date. I have tried to reset all folders, I have tried to apply all subfolders to these settings, and whatever else I could find. So obnoxious! I even went to the Windows Annoyances book by O'Riley and tried everything I could in there - no luck! Help please!! I save and load a file at least every 5-10 minutes and it is driving me crazy.

I tried sort by date, I tried apply first and then ok - When I am saving & loading I can change it to sorted by date, but it always reverts after I leave the folder and come back or save or load and come back. I tried to go a folder up and put apply these settings to all subfolders and mess around with that folders options. I can not name the folders by date (it would have to be by time) because the folders need to be named the actual name of the merchant.

My folder settings stay just how I set them whenever I am browsing the folder with Windows Explorer (organized by date). However, whenever I save a file, download a file, or try to open a file through any program the folder is always organized by alphabetical order. (while still in the save/load dialog ... Read more

Answer:Windows (XPs2) Folders Keep Reverting to Alphabetical Order when Saving or Loading!

Try this. In an Open or Save dialog box, sort by date. Now, hold down the Control key and click the X in the upper right. (close the box).
Next time you open the dialog box, it should be sorted by date.

Hello Everyone! Sorry. Instead of a question, I just have this solution that I want to share. I noticed nobody here asking for it. But, just in case, here it is.

QUESTION: When we open multiple Microsoft Office documents from Windows Explorer, they don't seem to open alphabetically. How do we do it?

ANSWER (Old MS Office Versions):

In your Explorer window, supposing you have five (5) files named A, B, C, D, E. The sequence goes like this:
1. Single-Click file B. This acts as the anchor point for most of the selection.
2. Shift-Click the last file. In this case, E. By this time, B to E is now selected. Only A is unselected.
3. To include A, Control-Click file A to complete the selection.
4. Press the Enter button.

ANSWER (Newer MS Office Versions; per app; Excel example):

1. Create a shortcut from the MS Excel application. Put it somewhere easily accessible such as the Desktop.
2. In Explorer, ready your files because you'll be dragging them to the MS Excel shortcut.
3. Select the files you want to open simultaneously and alphabetically. It doesn't matter how you select them.
4. This is the curious part. When you drag and drop the selected files to the MS Excel shortcut, it matters which file among the group your cursor is pointing at. That file will be the first to be opened. The rest will be opened alphabetically after the one you're pointing at.
5. Example: You have files A, B, C, D, E. We select them all and drag-drop them to the MS Excel shortcut.... Read more

Is there a way to use Middle English characters with Word 2000? I support a professor who needs to use Middle English characters for a book he's writing. I can't find them. Ideas? Thanks!

Hi JMK and welcome to the site!

I tried a quick search and came up with:

If this is no use, try a search on Google, using the pertinent words. Or perhaps one of the clever bods on this site may have a better suggestion.

Hi, I have a T61 notebook with both English and Thai characters. I dont know how to swap between them. Can anyone help??? Thinkpadthai

Answer:English to Thai Characters on T61

If you are using Vista(I use Vista Ultimate 64, Other versions may vary), you first must install Thai Lanuage Pack from Windows Updates. After that go to control panel>Change Display Language>Install the Thai language Pack(if not done already)>Change Keyboards>look under installed services>add>scroll down to Thai(Thailand)expand>expand keyboard>then tick Thai Kedmanee, or whatever other dialect suits you>then click OK. You should then see in the taskbar the language bar. If not right click the taskbar>toolbars>then tick Language bar. I hope this helps! Cheers, Singtoh

Hello. My computer runs on Windows XP SP2 with Greek as regional option language. It displays English just fine but when I run programs which use non English characters (German or French dictionaries for example) I see some greek characters instead of the ones that should be displayed. I know that changing the regional option language solves the probrem but then I can't read greek. Is there a way to keep greek and still be able to
read non english characters? Thank you.

Answer:Non English Characters displaying problem

i think you will need to install the greek language software and change the regional settings. i will see what i can do.

My husband returned to his comuter tonight to find that it had rebooted and now there are nothing but non-English characters showing on all of the screens! He is running Windows XP and has an up-to-date copy of McAfee antivirus software running at all times. We have rebooted several times with no change...even the screen where you enter your password is in a foreign language!

Since we cannot read anything on the monitor, I don't even know how to get to Control Panel, much less figure out where it might be that I could change things back to U.S. English.

Any help that anyone could provide would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hello all -

I am trying to do a Windows 7 reinstall from my Samsung Recovery disk, as I have a Samsung laptop. I have received the infamous "windows could not format a partition on disk 0...Error code: 0x80070057" error. Through researching this forum it seems the diskpart program is used to troubleshoot. However, the program only displays English from the command lines or numbers (i.e. - 465 GB). Everything else is displayed as Chinese or Japanese characters. Is there a way to change the language to all English? Thanks.

Answer:Diskpart not in English. Displaying Chinese or Japanese characters

Hello richarmb Welcome to the Seven Forums!

With a factory recovery disk that should automatically reformat and reOS the drive for you. That works along with the hidden recovery partition to bring everything back to how you saw the preinstall when first buying the laptop.

Since the manufacturer is actually South Korean with a US product and support site. Samsung - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia the default language for non user items would be in the native language and unfortunately not flexible like adding language packs onto Windows itself. You're dealing with hard copy media not an OS already install in that sense.

The only option for a clean install with an English version of the Disk Part tool would be borrowing someone else's 7 dvd and then entering the key on the sticker itself. But you shouldn't even be needing Disk Part with any factory restore option.

When I was in Taiwan, my uncle bought me a R Series ThinkPad Laptop. Since most of the people there communicate in Mandarin Chinese, the keyboard (typing section) also has Chinese characters on it. I'm back in America now and I also do a lot of writing, but I don't plan on typing in Chinese for a while.

Do you know of a way where I can get a keyboard (typing section) that solely has the English alphabet on it? Or, do I have to buy a completely new laptop for this to happen?

Thank you.

Answer:Swap out keyboard with extra Chinese characters for solely English one?

Hi, there are tons of new english keyboards for R series on ebay.com (30-40$) For example for R500 http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=Lenovo+R500+Keyboard&_sacat=See-All-Cat... Just remove 5 screws from the bottom of your laptop, remove the piece with touch pad and keyboard and replace. It is very easy and takes 5 minutes.

For some reason, only when I'm using the open dialog box for a program such as winamp, word, etc. (not when browsing in Explorer), I end up starting from the end of the list working up to the file folders instead of the other way around, as I've organized it to be.

Does anyone know of an option change that may have caused this, and how to change it back? Thanks in advance for your support.

Recently got a new machine with XP installed. When I copied some data folders and files from my old setup (95), I found they were no longer listed in the same order. The folders and files all have numerical titles representing the date of the data,i.e,
folders for any given year use the month and day numbers as title (mmdd format} and the data files in a given folder use the time as title (hhmm 24hr format). The problem is that XP Explorer ignores any leading zeros in the title, i.e., it sorts the list numerically. My data collection program drops all trailing zeros to save storage space so files for the sequential times 0230, 0630, 2100 are named 023, 063, 21 and then are listed in the numerical order of 21, 023, 063 by XP Explorer.

I figured I have to add the trailing zeros to the old file names and, perhaps, modify the data collection program. But then I noticed that in the Temporary Internet Files folder files are _not_ ordered numerically but "alphabetically" like in 95.

My question then is - Can XP Explorer be set to sort a file list in the same way it does for the Temporary Internet Files folder?

This is a problem that has bugged me for a long time: any time I want to save a file, in any application EXCEPT Word and Excel, the list of folders in the "Save as.." window is in chronological order instead of alphabetical order. I can always make the order alphabetical by right clicking in the window, and then clicking on "Arrange Icons by > Name."

This isn't much help however, since when I close the application and open it again, the list will appear in chronological order again (newest folder created will appear first). This problem does NOT occur in Windows Explorer

How do I get the folders to appear in alphabetical order? Does anyone else have this problem?

This is a problem I have that is 'solved' by rebooting my computer, but arises again after some time when I am in Word and some posting forums (not this one). I have a new laptop with Vista Home. When I am typing, there comes a point that the "?" key instead outputs ?, a similar problem happens with other keys, such as the quotations key. Then I reboot and everything is fine again. It is extremely odd (and annoying), and frustrates me becuase I need to write a paper and do not want to have to keep rebooting!!

Sounds like Regional settings might be acting up
Go to the Control panel and open Regional settings. Click on the keyboard tab. How many language options do you have?
Maybe even change it and change back

I recently reinstalled Windows XP after reformatting my HDD [new mobo, etc.], I kinda rushed the installation. I left the language and regional settings as English (US) [I'm English (UK)], I've went into Language and Regional Settings in Control Panel and made the amendments for both drop-down boxes, restarted my PC, and checked the settings again. They seem OK ["English (United Kingdom)" and "United Kingdom"] in Control Panel, but it's still treating the keyboard as English-US. I get @ for " and vice versa... Any ideas on this? [Any other info needed to help explain?]

Googling it keeps returning answers saying adjust "Regional and Language Options", which I have. Any ideas or directions appreciated.

Did you install the special drivers for the motherboard, bios and others that come on a separate disk? If not then go to either the manufacturers web site or the motherboards web site and download them and run them and after they are installed reboot the computer.

If this does not work try this:

You might have to remove the hard drive from this computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and after it is able to be accessed by Windows on that computer you will have to manually backup all of your important data that you have to another media like CD-R's, DVD or Thumb drive. Then when this is done return it to the original computer as a master drive on the primary IDE cable and do the following:

Hi - I'm using Vista Business.

When using an office program, certain characters do not show up correctly. For instance the '@' symbol (shift+2) shows up as quotes.

Here's the strange part. I can type normally in notepad. This suggests that there's a setting in Office??

In either case, I tried changing Vista's language settings by right clicking the taskbar -> toolbars but the 'languages' toolbar does not appear. In other words, i don't have any other languages installed.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Shift+2 for quotes is UK (maybe others)

Wrong characters have just sprouted in some places. Things like instead of ?, for instance.

I've spotted them in two places only : comments included in Properties of Macrium Reflect backup files, and one blog I follow regularly through Firefox.

That's the reason I suspect it's Windows-related and not a Macrium problem. It happened suddenly with no obvious trigger beforehand. It's the sort of bad transcription which often happens in emails.

Now the same blog displays correctly again. Any ideas ?

I just received delivery of a mini camera/voice recorder that has an instruction sheet in both Chinese characters and also broken English...very broken! In fact, it's basically incomprehensible. Is there anyone viewing this that may be able to help me translate the instructions, because I can't get the recorder to work yet. The colors of the light indicators on the recorder and the instructions don't even match. All that I can observe is red and blue, while the instructions refer to a yellow and green in addition to red.....go figure. And yes, I've contacted the seller about this but they haven't responded yet. I strongly suspect they don't have a clue either...they're just merchandisers, not tech folks.

I've attached a copy of of the so-called English instructions, but if you can read Chinese please contact me and I'll send you or post the instructions written in Chinese characters.

Thanks for your interest.

Answer:[SOLVED] keyboard wrong characters

Either you are in a Non-US English location and have the US layout, or vice-versa
US Shift+2 is @
UK Shift+2 is "

Control Panel | Language and Regional Options
On Regional tab, select the correct language for your location.
Click the Languages tab, then click the Details... button
Select the correct Default input language. This should also install the correct keyboard
Under Installed services, if the incorrect keyboard is shown, click the Add... button
Select the language and layout, and click OK
You can remove the other keyboard if needed. Helps to keep it from getting switched back accidentally.
