Printing wrong characters for Russian and Chinese

Question: Printing wrong characters for Russian and Chinese

ive got several printers and computers, which give different results. Win Live Mail displays Russian and Chinese correctly, but when sent to printer, most of them garble the characters. i dont want to delve into each printer hardware, so am hoping this is a problem with Win 7 encoding somewhere ? ive seen options in Live Mail itself, but changing them doesnt help. is there anywhere else in Win 7 itself that can be experimented with ? thanks for any help !

Preferred Solution: Printing wrong characters for Russian and Chinese

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Printing wrong characters for Russian and Chinese

I can't be certain whether it's your printer settings or Windows that's at fault here, so I've posted this link in the hope it may help you.

Pinyin Joe - MS Windows 7 Chinese Language Features, Setup Help

As a matter of interest, do you have the Russian and Chinese language packs installed? Obviously, you would need Windows 7 Ultimate for the language packs.

I just received delivery of a mini camera/voice recorder that has an instruction sheet in both Chinese characters and also broken English...very broken! In fact, it's basically incomprehensible. Is there anyone viewing this that may be able to help me translate the instructions, because I can't get the recorder to work yet. The colors of the light indicators on the recorder and the instructions don't even match. All that I can observe is red and blue, while the instructions refer to a yellow and green in addition to red.....go figure. And yes, I've contacted the seller about this but they haven't responded yet. I strongly suspect they don't have a clue either...they're just merchandisers, not tech folks.

I've attached a copy of of the so-called English instructions, but if you can read Chinese please contact me and I'll send you or post the instructions written in Chinese characters.

Thanks for your interest.

Question: Russian Characters

I have some Russian songs and English songs in My Music. The English songs are displayed just fine but the Russian songs are represented with Latin characters with weird accent marks above them.

I went to regional and language settings: advanced: and set the language for non-unicode programs to russian and that worked on two other PCs. Although on this PC, although the titles of the songs are now in Cyrillic, the actual file names are still corrupted. Another problem I have with this method on the two PCs that it worked on was that certain programs, especially during installation, are given in Russian and I only need my songs to be affected, not programs. Thanks

Answer:Russian Characters

All you've done is right, it must work for you.. Try to experiment with the first tab 'regional settings' as well. Otherwise, i'm afraid it's a bad job.

Question: Chinese characters

When reading text on some (not all) websites, I see Chinese characters in some of the sentences. Here is an example: "Coming back, we decided to take he other road."
I've contacted the author of the newsletter on this website and he has never heard this complaint before. I've checked the same website with two other computers and I DON'T see Chinese characters with my other computers. I've scanned the computer where these appear with Symantec Anti-Virus, Spybot Search and Destroy, Microsoft Antispyware and Spyware Doctor. My anti-virus definitions are updated when available via Symantec.

I don't have IE6 or any other program on my computer set to have the Chinese language as a secondary language.

It is possible that these characters are Japanese Kanji rather than Chinese.

I exchange email with friends in Japan and on Taiwan regularly but don't visit websites written in Chinese or Japanese.

I look forward to getting suggestions on what I should do to get rid of this problem, what scanning software to use, suggestions on what may cause the problem, etc.

Thank you very much.

Answer:Chinese characters

The problem continues and I don't understand it at all. Sometimes Chinese characters appear instead of (") parentheses marks and sometimes just as the first letter of a word ("The range of communities in New Zealand varies from very utback uralor even uggedto pretty cosmopolitan."). Has anyone ever had this problem? Do you still have it? Have you been able to fix it? Thank you.

I have a weird problem, I can read webpages and even input Chinese characters on my computer but when I download a programme written in Chinese characters I can only see the annoying codes, how do I deal with this?

Answer:Can't read Chinese characters

You would have to have a Chinese version of windows in order to install a Chinese program in many cases.

I used to run Engish windows, and as you said, I was able to view Japanese websites, and input Japanese characters, but I couldn't install any Japanse software into my comptuer without the characters getting all messed up.

The good news is, the opposite is NOT true. If you buy a Chinese version of windows, all English software works no problem.

I have heard that Windows Vista will allow us to select what language version we want to run, and with the click of a tab, switch from language to language (like you can with a Mac). I hope this is true!

Hi everyone!

After unfortunately having my Macbook Pro stolen, I have had to invest in a cheap little netbook that is still running Windows XP.

- Can I even upgrade my netbook without it being really slow/crashing all the time to the latest version of Windows and would I have to pay (yes, I am that out of touch with computers I do not know).
- MORE IMPORTANTLY: at the moment Chinese characters (Hanyu traditional/simplified) are showing up as blocks on my screen. What can I do to see the characters properly?

I am currently learning Mandarin and it would be a lot more helpful if my netbook could display the characters, instead of having to rely on my iPhone for the majority of my learning.

Is there any update/program I can use that will allow me to do this?

System Info (from Control Panel:
- HP, Compaq
- Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, SP3
- Intel Atom CPU 1.60GHz
- 798MHz, 0.99 GB of RAM

I am not too concerned about getting it updated, mainly just being able to see Chinese Characters.

Thanks very much in advance and apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place,

Answer:Chinese Characters on XP Netbook

Hello,See if this link is of any help: Arrow through all 5 pages.Regarding Updating:Most netbooks support 2 GB of RAM but come with 1 GB installed. Adding an additional 1 GB of memory would improve the netbook speed. I'm not sure if your netbook would support Windows 7 Starter Edition; however, it's been demonstrated that WinXP runs faster on a given netbook then Win 7 Starter does.

I transferred some of my chinese documents to my PC just now. Some of them are okay, while some of them got their titles all messed up (I'm talking about 500+ messed up documents. All of the messed up documents came from the same zip files if that's going to help).
Naturally, I googled and found out that if you change your system locale to China in the Region and Language tabs, you can solve the problem. Unfortunately, not for my case

I also unhide all the fonts in my Fonts folder (somebody says that'll help), but the problem persists.

I also added Chinese Language to my keyboard to see if it can help, but that also didn't work. So.. anyone any suggestion?

Hi Zaffy. I don't see a log from the Gmer rootkit scanner. Did you have trouble with that?

I'd like to try to get a more detailed log from GMER rootkit scanner.

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have troubles, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Hi. I'm wondering how to enable the display of Chinese characters on a Windows XP Home desktop. I've heard you had to go to the Regional and Language Options to install the East Asian language files, but on my laptop, which is a Windows XP MCE 2005, I never had that option checked yet I can see Chinese characters. On the desktop, they display as squares with numbers inside. Not sure why it would be different, since they're set up the same. It can't be browser-related as it occurs in both Firefox and IE. It's not a significant issue, but wondered why it was happening. Thanks,

Have the XP CD ready, get into Control panel>Regional and Languages and you'll need to instruct XP to install support for "East Asian languages" and "Install files for complex scripts" under the "Languages" tab.

Also under "Text services and input">Details>Advanced, tick the top most option.

Hello all, Glad I found this forum... hopefully someone here has come across this issue and knows the fix for it.

First off, this is very new computer with Vista Ultimate (64-bit) and it has Norton and Guild Wars installed.
Here's the Problem...

Whenever I run Guild Wars, there is a new folder with Chinese or Korean looking characters for a name created with a guild wars sub folder. and if I try to do a screen capture, it creates an other folder (again with foreign letters and in both cased the folders are empty with only an empty guildwars sub folder being created) in the main guild wars directory. And I can not use the Template System in guild wars (this is my biggest concern) not sure why exactly but in the Guild wars chat box, it says that Guild wars was unable to save the template because it could not access/write to the folder ... or something like that.

has anyone come across this before? is there a fix to the problem?
I have tried a complete re-install of guild wars in the default spot (program files) also I have tried a complete install in C:\Guild Wars, as well as an attempt on a seperate partition.... all with the same result.... foreign folders on startup created and unable to use the template system in the game

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

Where does it come from? Since my keyboard no longer has Chinese, actually doing a search for such a file will be impossible--besides the fact that I can't really read Chinese anyways. So how do I find such an app and get rid of it?

(BTW, unlike Win 7 now on boot I get HP Solution center loading as well and don't know what to disable since doing so may actually disable the printer.)

My system cannot display Chinese and Japanese characters. Korean characters and originally Chinese and Japanese do not have a problem after I deleted FNTCACHE.DAT in system32. On my Windows 7 system all of the characters work fine but on my Windows 8.1 system the Chinese and Japanese characters revert back to boxes when I booted my system up for the day to use. It's getting pretty annoying not knowing what I want to listen to.

You would need to switch the hole language of the user to "Chinese".
Or, try with applocale, and use it to run WMP in "chinese mode".

I got a game on my Win7 Professional SP1 that is in Chinese, but when I start it all the text is either squares or question marks. I have done everything I know of.

In the Regional and Language window I have change format to Chinese Simplified, the current location to China, the display language to Chinese Simplified, current language for non-Unicode programs to Chinese Simplified.
I also unchecked the "Hide fonts based on language settings" button under Font Settings.

Still the game shows squares and question marks while my entire PC shows everything in Chinese.

Is there anything else that I am missing?

Actually I'm not having any problems reading or writing it on websites/word etc. My specific problems involve importing emails from Outlook 2003, and favorites from Internet Explorer 6. They are fine in my old machine but after importing to windows 7, i get garbage text. Anyone know what the problem or solution is? Thanks

Dear Sir,

I am using Windows XP Home edition.

Whenever I tried to type in certain Chinese characters in any application like Notepad, Firefox, words, etc. The application will crash will error report telling "Modname: uniime.dll" is causing problem. The application where I type in the troubled word will close after the error prompt but the windows and other application remain intact.

The same problem occurs for several Traditional Chinese characters input method, for the same Chinese character.

I have been using the same system without the said problem for years and this problem occur after I tried to use a clean disk application and canceled the process in the middle (I know I am not wise there). I was told the uniime.dll is about the IME international input method, I wish it is only a corrupted dll causing the problem. How may I reinstall that particular module or should I do other stuffs to fix it?

hie..i would like to know is there any ways that i can read chinese characters in windows XP.I mean got any software or updates provided by microsoft ??I want to read chinese characters in Command prompt.Thankz for helping.!

Answer:Reading Chinese Characters In Command Prompt

Not sure but I don't think you can.I use w2k pro which has multi-lingual support. On my English version of w2k pro, even with Chinese support, I open a cmd window, turn on the Chinese input method, try to type Chinese, and it won't come out. If I copy and paste Chinese characters on to the command prompt, it still won't accept it.On my Chinese version of w2k pro, that's possible. So even if your XP is XP Pro (which also has multi-lingual support), but if it's an English version, I suspect you can't do what you want. What exactly do you want to do in the cmd prompt? Maybe there's a workaround.

Have any of y'all seen a box that pops up with a blue border, at the top there is a penguin with 4 Chinese characters beside it. Below is another with QQ: then a box with 10000 in it, two or three more characters, another box with 10000 in it, then a small box with the image of a person in it, followed by 8 more characters.
Then below that is a larger box full of Chinese characters and some numbers. After this pops up, things deteriorate rapidly. The first thing we noticed was that the Task manager would not open. Others had other problems, eventually not being able to work at all.

I'm not asking for a solution. We have been looking High and Low, and we know how to use the tools available. I just want to know if anyone out there has come across this and if anyone knows where it came from?

My computer is only a couple of weeks old. It's a T5100 and when i got it it was fine with displaying chinese and japanese characters which i am having problem with now. I didn't change any language settings or anything related to how the language would be shown. It shows totally fine on websites like chinese sites or youtube, but not on my computer programs, for example on itunes or skype, all non english words are shown with boxes. It only started recently. Yesterday i restarted my computer and it was normal but today when i opened the computer it started again. I don't really want to keep restarting my computer everytime it happens and i have a lot of songs that are boxed so it really bothers me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

it is T510, not T5100.
What OS do you have? and whether it is Home Premium, Professional, etc.
What is the default language for non-unicode programs that you set in the language and region setting? (access this through control panel).

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium in English, and for some reason, Chinese characters SOMETIMES won't display properly. By sometimes, I mean that when I turn my computer on, and open a program that displays Chinese characters, the characters just display as boxes. But then I restart the computer, and the Chinese characters would display properly again. Then this happens again the next time I turn on my computer. Is this some kind of bug in Windows 7? Anyone else had this problem before?

I don't want to change the language of the UI, and changing the non-unicode program language to Chinese will change the language of all my applications as well, so that's no good. Any other solutions? Thanks!

The closest thing I came to my subject here was the following discussion:
Windows not reading Chinese characters properly

In my case all is already set as such: Fonts are all accepted and used in many software, the language and keyboard settings set as such, etc. etc. In fact I could see/read my Chinese characters on a file name and within them (text) without problems whatsoever--all software Office, Adobe suite, Browsers, etc. can read Chinese . The thing is though, the one thing I can not do, is open a file which has Chinese characters in ts name. If I change the name to ABCD no problem, it's openable. but if I have even just one chinese character within the file then, no go.

Answer:Windows can't open files with Chinese characters

I believe that one must have Windows 7 Ultimate to load the Chinese language package.

I've googled it and it seems like some others have had similar issues, but i'd like to ask if anyone knows what this is all about.
If i copy paste the line seen on screenshot, then this is what i get:

I'm 100% sure it's not malware or any other type of malicious software, so please don't start saying that my pc has a virus.
What i'd like to know, is where it's coming from and why is windows 10 doing this?

In past, in win 7, i've seen similar chinese characters somewhere in documents and settings folders within some files, i was cleaning my files, going through all the folders in docs and settings and i saw some files having similar names.

It's a fresh install of windows 10, I haven't downloaded anything, but simple things, such as google chrome, ccleaner, winamp, skype ..etc, everything from trusted sources only, so clearly it's not a virus or malware, whatever it is, it's within windows 10.
I don't think it's dangerous, but i'm just trying to figure out why my PC is going chinese on me.

D'you know when you click on a web-page, and a pop-up box say's... 'You need to install Chinese Language Characters to display this page corectly'...
Well, when i click OK, (yes) - to install the required language characters - It asks me to insert my windows CD - and then it fails, saying: the file xjls.nls cannot be found
And when i try to install East Asian Language Characters from my WinXP Pro CD, thru Control Panel/Regional and Language Options - The same thing happens !
My copy of XP pro doesn't auto-run - so when i want to - i have to start the install or repair using 6 floppies...(it being a dodgy copy the PC builder sent me)
The file isn't on the CD when i use windows search - (even when i use folder options to 'view all files')...
So - Can anyone tell me where i can get the file from, and whether it's just a matter of 'double clicking' it to install ?

Many thanks - Blo. :beard:

Answer:chinese/east asian language characters

I'm not sure if it works but you want to install the Language
packs in the Internet Explorer Browser. Go to Tools, Internet Options, select Languages at the bottom, then click add and
install the different Languages you want the Browser to support.

You will need to close and reopen Internet Explorer for this
to take effect most likely.

Hello all,

This is a really strange problem. Both my laptop and my desktop can't seem to read Chinese characters properly. The languages are installed; I can type in Chinese just fine, but if I go to a folder that contains music files in Chinese or I open up Windows Media Player, the characters are all boxes. Just plain old boxes. Yet, if I choose to play one of these songs, the correct title will show up in my Windows Live Messenger status. I'm not sure why Windows Live Messenger can read it properly, but not Windows 7 itself.

Even if I go on google chrome and go on youtube, the youtube page itself will display the characters properly, but the google chrome tab label will be boxes. The screenshot should clarify.

If anyone has any idea, I would really appreciate it. One thing that I have noticed is that if I connect my Sony mp3 player, suddenly all the characters will show up perfectly, so I really don't understand why this is. Please advise.

Thank you all in advance =D

Answer:Windows not reading Chinese characters properly

Try this:

Start> Type Fonts in search box and press enter> When fonts folder opens, click on Font Settings on left navigation pane> Untick Hide fonts based on language settings> Ok your way out.

If no fix, right click on the Ming Liu fonts in the fonts folder, and select Show. Restart to see changes.

How do I copy Chinese characters from the Touch Keyboard to paste elsewhere such as search engines?

Answer:How do I copy Chinese characters from the Touch Keyboard?

I only run English, but when you run another language, do you have a Character Map for those symbols.

On my touch keyboard, holding certain keys will show additional options. You may also have an option to use different styles of keyboards which needs to be enabled in the PC settings area and then you can select the configuration from the keyboard.

I used Explorer++ as a replacement to windows explorer. Tested it's search feature to look for a AT&T text file. It finds strange Chinese characters that Windows search doesn't find.

Here is a pic.

Uploaded with

I have no idea why it found these or why they are on my system. I'd look at them in a text editor then copy and paste the contents to Google Translate to see what these documents say, but they are not click able. No location address is given for these files either.

How can I make these clickable and open them in an editor?

Answer:Explorer++ finds strange Chinese characters - How to open them?

I see this got moved out of General.. it really is only a Windows question however.. it does not matter what program I used to find these Chinese files - (These files have nothing to do with the Explorer++ program) with any Chinese files on my system of this sort.. what do I use to open them?

Windows itself must have some way to access and display the contents of these files. Do I need support for Chinese characters before a text editor will be able to open them? I want to know.. why are these files in Windows not clickable.

during exploration of various app creators for android I came across I'm still using IE8(sadly no more support) but have google chrome as a second option.
I'm not sure when what happened exactly. I did a defrag, cleaned some old files. I tried to open beta.appinventor in chrome and it displays chinese characters across the screen.
Even when I log-in to my modem (portable wifi router) from chrome it displays chinese characters. Very few sites display adds in chinese the rest of the site would be ok. Also if I open a tab in incognito mode the entire window is filled with chinese characters.
Now the chinese characters are not displayed by opening 'normal' url's.
The puzzling thing is, the speed of the system is good. IE8 has no problems. I can open websites in chrome, no problem.
I tried ccleaner, norton scan, dr.web scan, uninstalled chrome, re installed, several times, knowing I will not be able to remove all chrome instances in the reg, trying it again with revo uninstaller and re install.

Answer:possible malware in google chrome, displaying Chinese characters

hi everybody,
sorry for my own confusion. I kept on digging and came across a forum. It was suggested to change the encoding in chrome to autodetect, While my chrome showed unicode. Anyway I tried, the result no chinese characters anymore. Allways thought unicode was more or less universal, that would have been the last thing for me to suspect.
Strange was that a new install to my laptop which never had chrome on it came with unicode already in place. Had to change that, too.
Long story, happy ending, problem solved.

Issue: All Chinese characters I try to view in text editors are being displayed as squares.

I can view the file in a browser (Chrome) and the Chinese characters appear correctly, but in text editors they are squares.

Background: I recently installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1 along with many other updates. I had not been installing any updates (yeah I know) but I wanted to be able to edit files with Chinese characters in them, so I installed all the available updates.

After I restarted the first time, I was delighted to see that the characters which were squares before were now legible Chinese characters. However, when I restarted again, the characters were back to squares.

I checked for updates and saw a few optional updates were available. I installed them, restarted, and the characters were back to being legible. I restarted again and the characters returned to being squares.

Now there are no available updates and the characters still display as squares. This happens no matter what text editor I use, be it Notepad++, Sublime Text, or plain old Notepad. The file is encoded with UTF-8 (it's been that way during both when I could see the characters and when I couldn't). It also happens no matter what font I use.

How can I fix this issue?

I've recently bought a Windows 8 64-bit desktop system after my old Win XP system died due to power supply and MB failure. One of my most used applications is Irfanview, a freeware image viewer and batching program.
Right now, I am experiencing a problem with Irfanview not displaying the Chinese characters in my folders correctly. I will attach screenshots so if you're so inclined, please have a look, it's easier to explain that way. Basically, Irfanview relies on a Unicode plugin to allow the program to browse Unicode folders, and also to open files with Unicode filenames.
On Windows 8, the plugin still works, but now Chinese characters are displaying as nonsense. I am still able to browse folders and open files, but in a way half-blind because of the gibberish characters. I have other computers running XP, Vista, and even Windows 7, but in all cases Irfanview is working.
I have been in touch with Irfan, the developer, who unfortunately has no solution for now. I have tried adding Traditional Chinese display language, changing the system locale etc, but to no result. My guesses now are toward Windows 8 display font (no Chinese characters?), or the font that Irfanview uses to display Chinese characters are not working the same way in Windows 8 compared to previous versions.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any suggestions and help.

Hello all -

I am trying to do a Windows 7 reinstall from my Samsung Recovery disk, as I have a Samsung laptop. I have received the infamous "windows could not format a partition on disk 0...Error code: 0x80070057" error. Through researching this forum it seems the diskpart program is used to troubleshoot. However, the program only displays English from the command lines or numbers (i.e. - 465 GB). Everything else is displayed as Chinese or Japanese characters. Is there a way to change the language to all English? Thanks.

Answer:Diskpart not in English. Displaying Chinese or Japanese characters

Hello richarmb Welcome to the Seven Forums!

With a factory recovery disk that should automatically reformat and reOS the drive for you. That works along with the hidden recovery partition to bring everything back to how you saw the preinstall when first buying the laptop.

Since the manufacturer is actually South Korean with a US product and support site. Samsung - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia the default language for non user items would be in the native language and unfortunately not flexible like adding language packs onto Windows itself. You're dealing with hard copy media not an OS already install in that sense.

The only option for a clean install with an English version of the Disk Part tool would be borrowing someone else's 7 dvd and then entering the key on the sticker itself. But you shouldn't even be needing Disk Part with any factory restore option.

hello there, I am a music lover who has more than 1000 mp3s and wma music files in my harddisk drive and I love them.

I do have a lot of chinese songs and all of them have meta data of GB codes (simplified chinese). Now I face a problem in switching between Winamp 5 and Windows Media Player. I use both players to play my music but the thing is they are not compatible when it comes to the issue of displaying chinese characters. That means, when I edit the media information in WMP, the chinese characters display fine in WMP but it becomes unviewable in Winamp 5. When I turn to edit the meta tag in Winamp 5, it is fine in Winamp but turns up unviewable in WMP 10.

It is really a trouble to me, as I have more than several hundred chinese songs. I appreciate any help on this issue. Thanks!

I'm having a really strange problem... the computer disk keeps getting full, I've kept uninstalling programs and deleting data, but amazingly after maybe 30-60 minutes I will lose 300mb or more of space... until I'm down to 10mb or even 0 @ one point... I'm stumped.

When I was in Taiwan, my uncle bought me a R Series ThinkPad Laptop. Since most of the people there communicate in Mandarin Chinese, the keyboard (typing section) also has Chinese characters on it. I'm back in America now and I also do a lot of writing, but I don't plan on typing in Chinese for a while.
Do you know of a way where I can get a keyboard (typing section) that solely has the English alphabet on it? Or, do I have to buy a completely new laptop for this to happen?
Thank you.

Answer:Swap out keyboard with extra Chinese characters for solely English one?

Hi, there are tons of new english keyboards for R series on (30-40$) For example for R500 Just remove 5 screws from the bottom of your laptop, remove the piece with touch pad and keyboard and replace. It is very easy and takes 5 minutes.

Hi. I'm using Windows 7 64bit Professional. It's configured for English and the System Local for non-Unicode is English (RP Philippines).

I've been able to copy and past Chinese characters from Word --> Notepad -->Chrome/Firefox/IE for work (I was localizing a website) with no problems until last night.

Today, when I tried to copy-paste a few chinese characters to Word, I was suddenly only seeing square boxes. I know this means that the font or app can't recognize or render the characters. My questions is WHY? and how to Fix it? It frustrates me since it was fine yesterday. I haven't installed anything new or changed any setting that I know of.

The only change would be a windows update KB915597 that automatically installed last night.

Please help! Thanks.

Wondering if anyone has been able to try this or has heard about this.
For those wanting to try it, here's a simple Japanese sentences you can copy-paste and send to yourself:
(This is a simple Japanese Test).

Answer:Will the Microsoft Band display unicode characters (Japanese, Chinese, etc.)?

Apparently it is not supporting unicode at the moment. I tested this on my friend's Band by sending him a text with Persian (Farsi) characters. Unfortunately the sentence showed up as squares.

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Answer:Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

Solved......I went to Control Panel > Languages and saw Chinese had appeared after my default English. No idea why, it just had. So I highlighted and pressed the option to Remove.

I find my temp directory has these pg files getting created - pg1, pg2, pg3, pg4, etc.
I delete them and they reappear over time. I've noticed my browsers (both IE and firefox) are slower and less responsive.
I ran a malwarebytes- logfile included.
Symantec AV ran with no flags. Any ideas?

Answer:Temp directory has these pg files created with (mostly) nonsense chinese characters

There are several post like mine out there already but none of the solutions have worked for me. When I am connected to my company LAN I can go to Google (my home page) in IE7 on an XP Corp SP3 Laptop. about every other time I click on a link I get the following error box.Whether I click ok on the error or click the X, a new browser window opens maximises and opens my home page. When I am on my home network the behavior is different, (probably because my home firewall is not blocking the site) When i click any link from my home page there is no error box but my click gets hijacked to an advertisement or fake virus protection sites. Here is what I have tried:1. Full scan and immunize with Spybot S & D (found a lot of cookies etc. didn't fix this issue)2. Full scan with Symantec Endpoint protection (finds trojans once a day, probably friends of this issue)3. Full scan with Malwarebytes (fixed other issues it found but not this one)4. Purchased full version of Spyware Dr (found and fixed 4 issues but not this one)5. Disabled all browser plugins, including those that run without permission. (did not impact the issue)6. Searched for any files or registry enties with "hpprintspool" in them (there were none)7. Installed HijackThis and created the following log -Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 9:43:09 AM, on 11/12/2009Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16735)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WI... Answer:Malware Cannot find http://(chinese characters) Make sure the path or internet address is correct

Hi jgardner,Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.A backdoor Trojan can allow an attacker to gain control of the system, log keystrokes, steal passwords, access personal data, send malevolent outgoing traffic, and close the security warning messages displayed by some anti-virus and security programs.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the Operating System. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can still try to clean this machine but I might not be able to make sure it will be 100% secure afterward. Please tell me if you want to go on with cleaning.

We have .Net 4.5 based WPF application. It works correctly on Windows 7.
When we moved it to Windows 10 it started malfunctioning.
On investigation we found that when we type a set of 2 character typing will make one Chinese character.
In windows 7 when we press first character it is converted to <BLANK space> for display in text box. When we press another character again it decides the final Chinese character to render.
In windows 10 this behaviour has changed.
when we press first character it is NOT converted but render as it is. When we press another character it decides the final Chinese character to render, by replacing first and second character typed.
Is the expected behaviour of Windows 7 vs Windows 10?

Answer:.Net 4.5 WPF application worked fine on Windows 7, malfunction on Windows 10 for Chinese characters. Is this expected?

Sounds logical.
