Sat L20: Missing characters when typing

Question: Sat L20: Missing characters when typing

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.

As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)

Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?

Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.

I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Preferred Solution: Sat L20: Missing characters when typing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Sat L20: Missing characters when typing

This problem only shows up when you type :)))

Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.
Any ideas?

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

Can we customize a key so that when pressed it will type several characters?
I would use that function to quickly enter my ?user name? or email address when accessing internet pages that require filling such fields plus the Password.

Thank you for any help.

Answer:Typing several characters with one keystroke

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.

If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.

Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.

If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

Is there a way to fix this myself or would I have to take my PC into a repair store? Or have to replace my keyboard entirely?

Hi, hoping someone here can help me...

Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).

Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.

Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.

Any ideas?

Answer:keyboard typing wrong characters

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

Hi. I use gedit as editor in my Linux systems (SUSE and Fedora); there I find that I can't type in accented characters like I used to do in Windows.

In the text editor in Windows, even using an English keyboard configuration, I could type in accented characters by entering a combination of Alt+<ASCIIcode>, for example Alt+130 would type in the accented 'e' character; this sequence doesn't work in Linux.

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem ?

I have found that my Yoga 900 will regularly insert two characters when I have only hit a key once. I might type "stop" (4 keystrokes) but I find the word "stopp" has been entered. This is not a problem with one key, it happens on lots of keys, as shown in the video:The problem with duplicate characters It seems to happen most if you type the key "gently", so the characters you press with pinkies and ring fingers are more likely to exhibit the problem, but the video shows this is happens on any key -- it is not a problem with just certain keys. I am getting a new laptop because of an issue with the Yoga 900 waking from sleep when picked it up:(My problem with the Yoga waking when I pick it up) I'll see if this new issue is a problem on the replacement Yoga. Note that Lenovo has been great, and is sending me a replacement laptop based on the waking problem. I have a brand new Satellite C50-A-1CK which is perfect for my needs EXCEPT I continually get double characters appearing on screen when typing which is:

B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.

Have checked for firmware updates but none available.

I hope that someone can help you and me on this!

I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.

Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.

I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.

HI, and welcome to TSG...

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?

Answer:Laptop keys also typing adjacent characters

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

Answer:windows live mail typing characters

I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

Answer:new problem, keyboard is not typing accurate characters,

There are a mix of ideas here: not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Do NOT check any box you see about removing the software. The above is not the usual uninstall, it just disengages the software from the hardware. When you restart the computer it will find your keyboard as new hardware then re-install the software from the supplied drivers. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Answer:Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

Solved......I went to Control Panel > Languages and saw Chinese had appeared after my default English. No idea why, it just had. So I highlighted and pressed the option to Remove.

For some reason, there always seem to be a second delay on the keys on the keyboard, including the numeric keypad. Many times, either a character was skipped or the character showed up twice.
Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.
I am very careful with the laptop as I am sure there was no spill.

Any comment is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

I have a Sony Vaio desktop running XP SP3,IE8 and spybpot and MS security essentials.
Of late there are random problems of missing characters when entering text into online messages(such as this)or using Excel, also multiple insertions (stuttering) of the same character. IE8 also freezes causing the CPU fan to come on.No security threats have been fund. I used CCleaner the other week to try to sort out the problem and also a defrag. Usually I have Live Messenger open.
Any ideas please?

Answer:missing characters/freezing

"IE8 also freezes causing the CPU fan to come on."
It sounds as if your PC may be overheating. Have you checked the CPU heat sink for cleanliness? You could also check temperatures by using Everest Home link text - after starting click on 'Computer' then 'Sensor' and details of CPU/GPU/HDD temperatures will be shown along with fan speeds.

The first time I installed IE7, many months ago, I noticed that it would miss characters as I typed. I found a fix to some settings that corrected the problem. I rebuilt my system last weekend and the problem is back. After searchin the web for hours, I can't find the info on the setting that fixed it the first time. Does anybody know where the answer might be (or what settings I need to change)? Thanks!

Running xp professional, desktop icon descriptions (i.e. WORD) and menu selections are shown in ascii characters instead of english. I went to display settings and clicked on fonts folder and nothing shows up. I can copy/paste fonts from a cd here, go to background, click on any choice and everything appears normal again.

When I shutdown/restart I'm back to square one and fonts are gone again. During boot process everything is normal this appears to happen as the desktop comes up.

Since few days I have Satellite P 100. The unit is very nice and I like it very much but I have noticed one negative keyboard issue and it disturbs me on my work. Very often I must write long reports and I try always to write it fast but I am always surprised when I see that many characters are missing.

I really don?t know what is wrong there but it is very annoying and it takes always long time to correct whole written text.
Does anybody of you have the same problem on P100? Please let me know if someone of you has solution for that!!!

Answer:Missing characters on Satellite P100

Hello Sascha

I can understand you but please don?t worry about that. For a short time one other user has reported this issue on this forum. It is solved with new BIOS - Version 2.10 from 27.7.2006.

This BIOS update you can find on Toshiba Europe page under

Click on ?Support & Downloads? > ?Support Homepage? > ?BIOS Update? (Download). When the BIOS download page is open choose your notebook model and make BIOS update. For P100 there are three different models listed. Please be sure that you have chosen the right one.

I hope that your problem will be solved and you can write your reports without correction.

Good luck!

I have been searching like mad to try and find the answer to this, but I just can't find anything! No one seems to have this problem or know how to help!

I reformatted my computer after trojans rendered it unusable, but I didn't have any sort of backup because it was unexpected.

I reformatted, installed drivers using Dell's website, and the computer works fine except for the fact that I am now missing unicode characters, such as number 2764, a black heart which I was previously able to see!

It is very annoying seeing little boxes instead of symbols that the people who posted them can obviously see, and I have no clue where to get them back! There is no "unicode downloads" website, or any sort of driver I could see that would get these back.

What do I do? How did this happen? I'm so frustrated!

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

You need to use a HD utility first to fully erase HD before running windows disc
especially you say there was trojans on it prior.

Go here for a utility to fully erase HD:

Go here for imgburn to burn it to a cd as an image file:

Note: After it starts erasing, remove the cd from cd rom to prevent it from becoming corrupted possibly.

If you cannot find a HD utility for the HD you have then go here:

killdisk -

1. After completing the full erase of HD
2. Install windows operating system
3. Install drivers - Go here: (enter service tag)

Note: Install chipset driver first. After each driver installation restart computer.

4. Install protection antivirus and antispyware
5. Update windows through windows update icon under the start button
6. Your done

Re this thread:

It was never resolved and I find my self in the same situation. This particular machine has Excel 2010 on Windows XP Pro machine (32bit). Printing to a Xerox MFP printer (although the printer seems to be irrelevant to a degree). FYI the printer has the latest drivers, the Machine and office is fully patched.

We setup a test spreadsheet and it fails. Basically some cells miss characters from the field. I tried printing to a PDF (the only other printer I have available) and it creates a perfect replica of the spreadsheet.

I tried changing the font so that TT prints as a graphic rather than download etc. Didn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Excel Missing Characters when printing

Hi, welcome to the forum,

You've put quiet a lot of information in the posting but one important fact is which font are you sing in Excel?

Maybe it's a special font with special characters that the character set of the printer does not recognize, extended characters like or the swedisk slashed O?
PDF has no problem ther but what happens when you print the pdf file to that same printer? Does it do the same?

Hi guys, I have the following pc issue:

I have a Dell Desktop pc and Vista Home premium edition, and yesterday my pc randomly shut off (I hadn't changed any settings or installed anything new as far as I'm aware). When it restarted, the bootup screens contain random characters and some missing characters. And when loading Vista, it will go to the loading screen bar (which is now yellow instead of green for some reason!) and then I just get a black screen with no cursor. However, it will load in safe mode and although it works fine in safe mode, there are also random blue/yellow squares on the screen (not sure if that is usual for safe mode).

I have tried putting in the Vista DVD and doing startup repair, doing a system restore, and also uninstalling/reinstalling the nvidia driver, but no luck. Can anyone recommend anything else to try? I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Answer:Random/missing characters on boot up and PC only works in safe mode

This is most likely a video problem. Try checking the cables first, then check the monitor (by trying another one).

Unplug the system from the wall and check inside of the case to see if the fan on the video card is free of dust/debris (if it's an onboard video card you won't be able to do this). Then plug it in and see if the fan on the video card is working. DO NOT stick your fingers inside the case when it is powered on!!! This can damage the components - to include damaging YOU!!! Also try a house fan blowing into the case to see if that helps any.

Beyond that, try another video card (DO NOT buy another one unless you can return it for a refund).

Answer:missing letters when typing fast

@Maxlondon? The keyboard speed may be set too slow. Adjust the keyboard speed pretty much in the same way this worked in previous versions of Windows. Control Panel > icon view > Keyboard > Keyboard Properties >> adjust as needed Example Reference:Typing speed is slow on windows 10, how to change keyboard speed? Other than that, make sure you have installed / updated your relevant HP Drivers for Windows 10.  Sometimes the Drivers in the computer's Driver website support page are newer than your "new" notebook. When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.

Hi, this is my first post on this (or any) forum, so I hope this makes sense.

Has anyone else had problems with missing keystrokes whilst typing on a satellite p100. Basically when typing I find that a couple of characters will be omitted at random (every 5-6 seconds). This only seems to occur with the internal keyboard, i've not noticed anything with me external USB keyboard.

At first i thought it was my typing, but if i hold down a key i can see a visible lag every few seconds. Also if I alternately type '1' and '-' i get characters skipped evry few keys, like this...

...these symptoms suggest to me that maybe it's not hardware based, but I could be wrong

Looking through the forums I see a some similar problems with the M60 but no obvious solution. I don't suppose anyone's come up with anything?

Thanks for the help

I hope Toshiba will solve this problem.

When typing a post the cursor is blinking away as I type.

After a few lines it stops blinking

Eventually it disappears and can make editing a headache as you can never be sure where the cursor is.

As this is a fairly new phenomenon can any one tell me if it is something I have done, or can do, to stop this odd behaviour?

Can we have the model number of the laptop? Have you tried an external usb keyboard? If an external also misses letters then it is the motherboard. Otherwise it likely needs a new keyboard and cost and difficulty of replacement is all over the board (so to speak) depending on the model.

I am using a Satellite M105-S3084 (Windows XP MCE) and have been unsuccessfully struggling with a keyboard problem since I first bought it. I tend to type fast, especially double letters and find that very often only one of the double letters shows up on screen. For instance "kk" would result in "k" only and similar missing letters even if not doubled. This causes a lot of wasted time correcting what I type.

I know that there are settings under Control Panel\Keyboard ("repeat delay" and "repeat rate") that permit setting speeds, but I have found them frustrating to use. I've tried both at various settings and still have a problem with missing letters. Maybe I just do not know which way to set which setting and I am just getting frustrated, or there is another setting somewhere else whic I do not know about.

Have others had this problem with mising letters while typing and found a solution?

To be honest it?s not known to me that the L550 would be affected by the same keyboard issue as the L670.
Did you test this notebook behavior using an external USB keyboard?
Do that?

If the same issue would not be available using the second external USB keyboard, then this means that the BIOS is ok and the internal keyboard is affected.

I hope someone might be able to help me.

I have had this laptop for nearly a year and slowly this is driving me mad. I have to type very slowly and deliberately when using IE.

For some reason it doesn't seem to pick evey key stroke up. It is fine when using office apps though. It seems to possibly be linked to the fan being on constantly.

Online games run slowly too.

I have bought an air duster can but not much came out of the fan area, so the fix that everyone keeps suggesting on here for fan issues hasn't helped, the fan is still noisy and it has taken me ages to type this.

Please help me!

Answer:Satellite A300: missing letters while typing fast & noisy fan

What plugins are you using in IE? Some plugins/toolbars can drastically affect the performance.

Have you tested it in FireFox or another browser? You can download FireFox from here:

Did you install Windows yourself? Or are you using the factory Windows installation?

Maybe you are missing some drivers, for example if you have not installed the correct Graphics Drivers, Windows will run in VGA Mode (software mode), which is very slow.
Have a look in Device Manager for driver problems.

It can also be caused by installed software. Perhaps you have two Antiviruses installed? Maybe you should try backing up your data and running Recovery. That would determine if its a hardware or software problem.

A BIOS Update may also help. You can get the latest BIOS from the Toshiba website in the support section.

It is Toshiba Satalite P305D-S8828 which is not available in europe, only is sell for USA.
Thats the link :

Laptops keyboard looks nice, soft and good at typing, but especially on a msn messenger box or forum reply page, when i am typing, it miss some of my typings??? I mean i normally use my keyboard fast, but it is like it doesnt press all the buttons but i really press the letters. So the things i write are mixed, not understandable cos of missing letters.

This is not my first laptop. I used a few more before but nothing like this happened before.
It doesnt happen always but generally happens.

Answer:Satellite P305D-S8828 Keyboard missing my typing and FN+F9 doesn't work

Go to the Toshiba US site and download the latest BIOS. Having the latest BIOS is important on new models.

For the Touchpad issue, download and install the latest Value Added Package for the P305D, and reinstall the Touchpad driver.
If you installed drivers for your USB Mouse (for example Logitech or Microsoft drivers), remove them. They may be conflicting with the Touchpad

Answer:Garbage Characters Replacing English Characters

Run Windows One Care Free ScanGo to Windows Live Onecare Free Scan It will say "Get a free PC safety scan" sure you click "Full Service Scan" in the middle of the page and not the "Try It Now Free" on the right side.Allow it to download an Active X component.Choose "Complete Scan" in the window that opensClick "Next"Do not click on anything else that offers you a free trial or to sign up if you live in the US.Allow it to scan - it may take quite a while, maybe two hours or so depending on how big your hard drive is and how fragmented your registry and drive are.

Hi there. This is an odd problem, whenever certain characters are used ("^ are just some) then a letter is pressed foreign characters appear.
When I press
" Then O it comes up as ?, instead of "O, and so on.
Does anyone have any ideas, on how this could be fixed. I've checked in the regional/language settings, and in the G15 control Panel.

Answer:Foreign Characters/Characters appearing.

I use English, German and Finnish keyboard layouts on a daily basis. Never had this kind of issue.

Could you please tell which language settings you are using?
