new installation fails - Edge 330 Recovery - not booting

Question: new installation fails - Edge 330 Recovery - not booting

Hello, - Edge E330- 6 weeks old- stucked for more then 20min- even it was not possible to enter the "disk management" in Win8- so I saved the Win8 OEM Key- start a complete new setup- but this was after 45% stopped and had an error- got the recovery DVD by post from lenovo (after 4 business days? no download possible) - recovery DVD will not accepted (the Lenovo is not booting from these) - download a Win8 RTM ISO - this runs directly and very well (is booting from this and installing it perfectly!) - so the Lenovo hotline tells me, they do not have a Win8 OEM ISO DVD, I must do it with the recovcery DVD- but these will be not accepted by the computer! - tried it with a external USB stick (FAT 32) and an SD card (FAT 32) - the data will be not accepted as a boot capable next plan: A) organize a Win8 ISO CD (not RTM), but I guess the key will be not be accepted because of OEM, I am right?B) return the notebook and buy a competitors notebook I appreciate any kind of help! Thanks in advancedrawonmycar

Preferred Solution: new installation fails - Edge 330 Recovery - not booting

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Yesterday I received my Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge E73 and the first thing I did was update my Windows 7 professional. However, after it had rebooted about 3 times it froze on the 'loading windows' screen. After a reboot, the startup repair launched and was restoring to a previous state. Ok, I thought this will get fixed. The pc rebooted and tried to do a CHKDSK but it failed and loaded the welcomescreen but froze with the message that winload.exe was damaged. Knowing about the system recovery partition I booted it at start and selected the option to restore the whole pc to factory state. Unfortunately, this happened.I tried using a retail windows 7 pro-disc to repair the computer. However, it didn't even recognize that the old windows was there, untill I looked at the partition manager. It seems the recovery partition is still intact but I can't boot to it anymore. Will it work if i delete the old windows7_os partition or do I have to do anything else? The bios is setup to start from the harddisk. Thanks in advance,Joeri

I used Lenovo Solution center to create a Win7 Recovery Media bootable USB. But it does not boot off the USB. It fails to load OS. But the Recovery Media info has been deleted from Drive Q: and anyway it said my license only allows to create one recovery disc, hence I cannot create another one. What do I do now? I want to reset to factory defaults. ThinkCenter Edge 91zWindows 7 Professional SP1

I have Toshiba Satellite Laptop Windows Vista, It was hanging so I tried to recoverr to factory settings, after taking my backup. The first disk i get the meesage "Cannot read from source file or disk "
type WIM file

I have option to skip, I skip this message and the first disk is ejected after a long time then in the second disk after some time I get error message. I think this is due to the two bad sectors on the hard disk, I did a chkdsk and it marked the bad sectors but when I repeat the recovery prcoess I get the same error message. I think the recovery disk format and unmark the bad sectors and later try to write to it again, do not remember the exact error message but it ends with -0008 i can post the full error message later.

Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Answer:Recovery installation fails

If the HDD is faulty and has defective sectors you have to replace the HDD. Chkdsk and other options will not help you because the drive is physically damaged.

If your notebook is under warranty you can take it to an authorized service provider in your country. The guys can replace the HDD for free.
Otherwise you can replace the HDD yourself because it?s not tricky and can be done in 5-10 minutes. :)

After installing Windows7, I need to install R&R. I have downloaded it through the Thinkvantage Toolbox, but installation fails with the error message (translated from Norwegian): A file required to install the Rescue & Recovery environment, could not be found. The installation could not continue. Pease ensure that correct .tvt file is located in the same folder as the installation package, and restart the installation. I have also downloaded the installer manually from Lenovo's website with the same result. Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Answer:Satellite L300 - Fails during recovery installation

I have also Satellite L300 but never had a problem with the Toshiba recovery disc.

What happens if you install Windows using a Microsoft disc? Does it work or do you get an error message too? If yes it might be a hardware issue, HDD, RAM or something else.

Furthermore I did read here in forum that it?s sometimes useful to format the whole HDD before using Toshiba recovery disc.
Check this!

Hi everyone

I have a Equium L350 after a crash I could not restart my pc. I tried to fix using the f8 restore menu and it did not work so I contacted Toshiba and got a restore disc. I reinstalled from the disc but after instalation it says installation complete but visa fails to boot.
I get: Windows cannot repair this computer automaticaly click finish to shut down your pc

After a format and reinstall is my pc broken? It's 13 month old there for out of warrenty

Answer:Equium L350 - Vista fails to boot after recovery installation

Normally after the recovery installation your notebook should work properly again.

In my opinion it could be a hardware malfunction. Have you tested the HDD for defective sectors? You can do this with Drive Fitness Test:
Download the ISO image and burn it onto a disk. Then you can boot from it and test your HDD for errors.

I would also recommend checking the RAM for errors:
Memtest is good diagnostic tool for the RAM.

I hope I could help you a little bit. :)

Hi All,

I have the above computer (or should I say my wife) & it has been nothing but a right pain since the first day we got it.
I have had it about 2 years & must have had to reformat the HD at least 6-8 times using the Product Recovery Disc as laptop wouldn't boot.
The laptop runs Vista.

Anyway problem I have now is that once again laptop fails to boot but for some reason Product Recovery disc also fails to work.....
What can I do...

I have read on various forums that it might work if I reformat the HD first using some s/w on a bootable CD but how/ what S/W do I use.....?
The laptop has a 160Gb SATA HD installed. How can I check this is all working.
I have no idea if current problem is S/W or hardware related..

Does Toshiba have a utility I can use...?

Many thanks for any help....

Answer:Satellite U300-13U fails to boot and Recovery disc fails to work too

What happened exactly?
Do you get some error messages using recover disk?

Please check if the HDD is OK! You can check this in BIOS.
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then the BIOS found the HDD and the HDD is not dead.

Usually you could boot the notebook using an Live disk? for example Bart PE
It?s a bootable live windows CD/DVD

This can helps to format the HDD and then to use the recovery disk!

I ve bought thinkpade edge 13 (0221RY6) and formated my hdd (was trying to install win XP). But now i am ready to switch on Windows seven and i am very sorry that i ve formated my HDD with pre installed windows 7.Somebody who has same machine PLS Can u give me your copy of recovery usb or link on it! Or any other help.THANKS!

Answer:I have lost my Recovery HDD with pre installed windows 7 on ThinkPad Edge 13 edge PLS Need HElp!

This is why one should burn recovery media before fiddling with the HD.
One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.
Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links
To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.
Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.
Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.
I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.
Good luck,

The laptop was running fine, but left unattended for several days. It came unplugged and the battery drained. When rebooting it, it went to the Recovery options. I went to a command prompt and it went to X:\. Chkdsk would not complete, recovery would not complete, restore to factory settings would not complete ... as if the hard drive is damaged. I do not see any option on to buy a recovery kit for this model. What should I do? Thank you, Tony

Been awhile since I've been here so I hope this is where this post goes.
Recently I had to uninstall a program, and now when I try to re-install it I get the following error: "Installation ended prematurely because of an error"
I have installed other program without a hitch since I first tried to install the problem program.
It gives me no error code just the message above.
I've searched the internet (I hate the term searched the web) and have found numerous "fixes" yet none have worked.
I know the info above is sparse, so if anyone thinks they can help please let me know what I can add for your help.

Answer:Installation fails: Installation ended prematurely because of an error

Some things you could try - in no particular order:
Clear your Temp folder. Type %TEMP% in Run box to open it. Dlete all its contents. Run Disk Cleanup Tool too. Then try to install it.
Else try to install it in Clean Boot state.
Check if your Windows Installer service is up and running. Open services.msc and ensure that the Windows Installer service is set to Manual. Start it manually if it is not started. If it refuse to start, this post may help you.
Else visit this link. Download SafeMSI and enable the Windows Installer Service in Safe Mode. Then try to install it. Hope something helps!

The 500 GB Samsung Hard Drive on my HP Pavilion a6500f PC running on Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) crashed. I bought and installed a new 500 GB Western Digital Caviar Blue model WD5000AAKS hard drive on the PC. I ordered recovery disks from HP using the computer's serial number and confirmed that the Build ID on the recovery CDs and the sticker on my computer match. However when I attempt to recover the system Windows loads the recovery files and then I get the error:

"This PC is not supported by the system recovery discs. You will not be able to recover this system with these discs."

I have tried 2 sets of recovery discs from hp and get the same error. I have attempted to use the Cyberlink Recovery Disk Utility from hp but it fails. This Utility only supports Windows 7 per the hp page.

I would appreciate any help on how to move forward. I am new to this site so if I broke any rules please feel free to correct me. Thanks.

Answer:System Recovery Fails with hp Supplied Recovery Disks

How much did you pay for your recovery discs and is it refundable? If you the recovery disc costs more then $100, you would be better off purchasing a copy of Windows 7 which is far more stable and a less of a memory hog.

I have gone to restore my laptop to Factory setting but in the rescue and recovery application i do not have any option to recover to the laptop as it came out the factory. When i got the laptop i created rescue media and have a set of 4 disks, All DVD(2 are 8.5GB). The R&R  boots and asks for the Final C disk. None of the disks display in the backup listbox. Before i went for a fresh install using a Windows 7 disk, i got R&R to off load media to a portable drive. This will boot to a different version of R&R similar to the post 2008 walkthrough. But the screen i get does not have the radio button for Factory restore, just the backup and when i put my DVD's in, no backup is found from the media i have... I removed the factory partition after i created the media as i presumed i could get back to the factory using them. My fresh install of windows 7 works but downloading the wireless driver from Lenovo doesn't activate... wish i never started to mess with it now.... Any suggestions???

I had 4 disks in a bundle, the first being the Rescue repair disk, which boots to a similar screen. As 1 of my disks didn't do anything in the various rescue and recovery application i used from previous thinkpads. Turned out this was bootable and the proper rescue and recovery for my set of disks... cdrivebackup.swm took ages to load and then asked for the second disk. Everytime I download a pdf document within the EDGE browser, it's going to open it automatically, and then it shows this error:

"Something is missing

To view a PDF, you need some media functionality that you don?t currently have. You can install the Media Feature Pack to view this PDF."

Is there anywhere I can download Media Feature Pack for windows 10?

Or is there anyway I could use adobe reader to open PDF documents in EDGE?(Under system default app settings, .pdf is already linked to Adobe reader)

Answer:EDGE browser fails to open any PDF document

Could this be because you have the "N" version of Windows 10 installed?

Lenovo Edge 2 1580 fails to power on completely.  There is a slight glowing from the screeen but other than that it does not complete the power on process.  I was able to get it to boot up by removing the CMOS battery and found a bios updated that needed to be applied:  D3CN32WW.  I applied the bios update and thought that fixed the problem.  I rebooted fine a few times with the CMOS battery in but then stopped again.  There is a note in the bios update file for the Ideapad 300s/500s failing to power on when it is booted the first time or after a period of normal use.  This is very issue I am having.  However, I can only get the computer to work correctly if the CMOS battery is removed.  Anyone else having this issue?

A few days ago out of the blue, my laptop began to take a very long time at the login welcome loading screen. Even after that, it gets stuck at a black screen with only the cursor (which you can still move around).  This all takes about 15-20 minutes, after which the desktop loads.  The happens when I shut down the computer and restart it, but not after awakening from hibernation. So for a while I only used hibernation instead of shutting the computer off.I eventually got tired of this and decided to try to restore the laptop to factory default using the built in one key recovery.  The problem is that when I try to get the computer to boot into recovery mode, either through restarting from the application or booting from shut down by pressing the one key button, it still hangs like before and just loads windows. I'm currently running Windows 7 (what was originally on the laptop). I'm also wondering of there is a way to boot into the one key recovery environment from a USB instead, maybe that could be a solution around this. If anyone could kindly provide steps on how to go about doing this, I think that it would be worth a shot!Anyone have any other ideas for how to fix this? Help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo Y570 hangs when loading desktop; One key recovery not booting to recovery mode

Do a boot time analysis using event viewer by following this tutorial: I think there's no way to boot to the One Key Recovery that is stored on a USB. However, you can clean install Windows 7 from a USB boot by following this Don't forget to make a factory reset discs using OKR software within this location C:\Program Files\Lenovo\OneKey App\OneKey Recovery\OneKey Recovery.exe (at least 3 are needed when I did mine).

AFAIK, "print to PDF" is not a built-in feature for Firefox under Windows, at least for the installed version.
I presume it's probably the same for the portable version.
I think you would need some sort of plug-in or extension or 3rd-party application (Adobe Reader DC, Acrobat, etc.) in order to provide that capability.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong....

I've got a six year old toshiba laptop running windows xp pro on it, and I'm having problems with the start up.

I the the computer on, the fan comes on, then 'in touch with tomorrow, toshiba' flashes up.
Then some bios message flashes up
'intel boot version 4 ...... etc etc,
pxe e61 media test failure, check cable
pxe mof: exiting intel pxe rom'

The windows sign comes up with the loading bar across the middle of the screen set against black. It does this for a few seconds, and then the screen goes completely black, waits for another second or two, then the screen flashes blue for an instant, and then the fan stops, and we go back to the beginning, where it will start with the fan coming on.

I've tried loading it in various of the options in safe mode, and to no avail, with it cutting out after it writes a number of the drivers in safe mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Windows 7 32bit on Dell 9200 4 GB RAM 2 x 500GB HDD ... with all OS updates.

Been working fine ... today left PC running, returned to it, power but screen was 'black'

Power off to reboot - on start up (normal) desktop paints in, the spinning wheel runs for ages, then eventually all seems fine ... but can't do anything, only action is cursor .. nothing clickable. (incl Ctl+alt+del) HDD led on PC running permanently.

Reboot in safe mode ... chose system restore .. and it shows a Windows Critical update restore point .. at a time that matches failure. ??
OK tried restore ... still the same.
Tried W7 repair disk, again selected restore ... Tried restore to next previous (2 days ago) all seems to go well, get login, desktop paints in ... then screen goes black ... all that is on it is cursor.

The only other points I can think of is that this morning (last successful boot up) it brought up a pop-up "Express files updated" with recommendation to run it ... as it gave no program, or manufacturer ... I chose not to run.
On one of the boot ups during problem .. an unfamiliar icon showed on desktop ... "Homegroup", a green sphere, surrounded by 3 orbiting blue spheres" although not been there on any subsequent boot up.

Any suggestions on next step ?

Answer:Fails to work after booting up

I take it the computer is not actually BSODing? It almost sounds like a memory error or corruption that is causing windows to freak out?

I take it that you are not overclocking it, this can happen when an overclock is unstable.

It sounds like the VGA is ok if you are getting some sort of start up screen but maybe when the VGA tries to set the resolution that you use for your desktop screen it is somehow not doing it and causing an error.

Its so hard to diagnose especially without any actual memory dumps or BSOD to highlight any issues.

Have you tried safe mode?

It could even be that the system restore hasn't worked correctly, as you know system restore operates on the reboot as well as while restoring, often setting up some files just before you get back into your desktop password screen.

Just come across this which may be of help to yourself??

When I search my Yahoo mail, opened in Microsoft Edge, it gives me error:

An error occurred while trying to fetch the items in this list. Retry

Search works okay when Yahoo Mail is opened in other browser.
Why so? I just switched to Edge and I noticed this.

Answer:Yahoo Mail Search Functions Fails In Microsoft Edge Browser

Yahoo and Edge and not been playing well for some time.

I do not know route cause but if you search Edge and Yahoo, even on this forum you should get a lot of hits.No real solutions except don't use Edge which is not really a solution. Maybe when Verizon gets this deal done we will see changes.

Long story short, I have to create a small website for a class I am in. I'm not new to HTML, so this is easy peasy for me, but part of the focus is on usability, meaning I have to make sure the site functions across multiple resolutions and mobile devices. No problem, CSS to the rescue.

I also have to make sure the site functions across as many browsers as I can. Again, no problem until the other day...

Our sites are not published, we just zip up our files and submit them for grading...anyway, to test the site, of course we just open the index.html page from the hard drive in whichever browser and test it out.

So, about 2 days ago, I started having a problem with MS Edge. For some unknown reason, when I edit one of the pages of the site, the navigation link to that page will not work! Works perfectly fine in all the other browsers, but not Edge. Today, I created a new graphic for the sitemap page (I edited the old one) and saved the new file replacing the old one. Now, when I go to the sitemap page link in Edge, it will not display the new graphic! Nothing has been changed in the file names or anything. This is driving me nuts!

I've tried clearing my browser cache, rebooting, scanning for malware, moving the site's files to a different directory, nothing helps. If I edit any part of any of the html files, Edge just simply will not open them from the nav links. I can click directly on the specific html file itself and it will open, but it seems editing... Is any possibilities for booting from external eSATA drive on Edge 15?I'd like to install Win7 to external drive but i can't see any way for solving this problem....

Answer:booting from eSATA on Edge 15

Hello Paganelle,
You may refer to the Microsoft Support policy before you start on.
Now, as when we try to install Windows 7 on eSATA drive it detects it as internal drive.
Make sure before you proceed the notebook BIOS is updated.

I'm seriously considering getting an Edge 430. I plan to get a larger mSATA SSD drive, install the OS on it, using the HDD for data. This is possible, correct? and anything I need to look out for?

Answer:Booting from mSATA SSD with EDGE 430

yes that is possible. But you would need to reinstall the OS from scratch.

My Edge 13 won't boot anymore. It performs the post however when it needs to boot the operating system it shows a blank screen or a blinking cursor. At first this behavior occurred occasionally and the system would boot after a couple of times powering it off and on. At this moment it won't boot anymore at all. I have already ruled out a hard disk problem. I must mention my Edge 13 has a history of problems. After the first month of usage it died and after repair it died for a second time within a month. I also have problems with the magnetic screen sensor and now this problem. My Edge 13 is 1 year and 5 months old so it is out of warranty as Lenovo only offers only one year warranty on this crappy product. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing the problem myself or should I take my loss? At least I have learned my lesson not to buy Lenovo products anymore, although it was a rather expensive lesson.

Windows wont finnish booting! i cannot access the PC in anyways via windows booting. i would like to repair this install if possible without reformating again

Any help appreiciated!

thanks and details below...

Before the Problem:

i was playing Ceasar IV, the game had froze for about 30 secs and then flashed a blue screen and restarted the PC. Since this happened the PC will not finnish booting. I have had this game for several months and no issues with it before.

Current Problem:

I press the power button the PC completes the POST and begins to start windows, the windows loading screen apears for around 5 seconds and the a very fast flash of a blue screen apears and the PC restarts and then it says the PC did not shut down properly and what do i wish to do.... i have tryed all safe mode types (with networking ect) but everytime i get the above problem.

More Info: I was unable to record the error number on the blue screen as it flashed too fast(around 0.5 secs tops) and the same for the current blue screen i recieve while attempting to boot.

I have left the PC disconnected from the power for over half an hour but still no change in symptoms.

i have formated my PC around 2 weeks ago to a fresh install and updated drivers ect but it has been used alot since with no problems what so ever while on the internet and gaming using COD4 and ceasar IV.

My Helix suddenly stopped booting. The power just goes when it should be loading Windows. I am able to enter the BIOS and as soon as I press save and exit to start booting windows it fails. Not even time to see the logo. Fan seems to be working. I took it to the local recommended technicians and they want to change the SSD (and they won't give me back the old one for some reason!). It is still under warranty. I would dread losing my files not backuped in the SSD. Anyone has any other possible causes for the failure to boot?

I recently installed Windows 7 and started facing a weird problem from and 2nd or 3rd day. First time when I start the PC on the day the startup fails and windows complaints the last shutdown was not proper or some driver has shut the system down automatically in order to prevent data corruption. After 3 or 4 (sometimes even 7,8) attempts or after starting in safe mode I'm able to start the PC and it runs like a dream for the rest of the day. If I try to restart it during the day I don't face any trouble at all. And the sad old story begins on the next day. I looked at the system logs and it complaints of a "Kernel power" problem. Searching for windows online help hasn't produced any useful info. Could someone please help providing some bright ideas about to how to solve this issue?
I have changed the system clock now to see whether it changes anything or not.

You need to go into the repair console and let it fix it automatically. You need your install/upgrade disc to do this. To do it manually through commands, when you get to the second screen (after you choose your language) go to "Repair Your Computer" and click Command Prompt. Type:

bootrec /fixmbr
press enter.

bootrec /FixBoot
press enter.

On this new laptop which appears to have UEFI and Legacy BIOS settings, setting UEFI settings to boot from DVD or USB first in order to run a bootable format disc to preformat before a clean install has thrown an error message that ..."boot from [xx device] failed." This was with the GParted.iso installed on disc or USB.

I did not touch the Legacy BIOS boot order just the UEFI boot order as information given suggested that the UEFI takes precedence.

In the end I formatted using the windows installation iso and format tool, booting from USB which worked. But this has meant that I get the windows recovery partitions that I was trying to avoid. Having got here, I think I will leave it like that as it probably makes sense and I suppose windows will probably run better with them? This has got rid of the additional HP partitions and crapware which is also what I was trying to achieve.

Just wanting to know for future reference, if I do want to boot from DVD or USB on this laptop OTHER THAN with windows installation .iso, how would I do it?

Thanks again in advance.

Answer:UEFI laptop, booting from DVD or USB fails

But this has meant that I get the windows recovery partitions that I was trying to avoid.

Hi, assuming you mean the 450Mb Recovery partition, you should keep that. That is for- guess what- recovery. Without that you have no Advanced troubleshooting options or automatic recovery. It's small- so you gain nothing worthwhile by not having it.

You could have removed all the additional stuff that came with your laptop without doing a clean install, and partition managers allow deleting the recovery partition.

Does your DVD boot up successfully on a different PC? Is there some chance it was not burnt successfully?

You may wish to check with your manufacturer about booting from a DVD. For example, on mine, I have to hit F7 to display the appropriate boot menu. Yes, F7. That was unexpected. And the option to select the DVD drive is described in a totally obscure way.

Hey,I've got a weird problem starting from my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E330.I installed Ubuntu 12.04 from USB-Stick and all worked fine. Then I wanted to do a Bios update, so I loaded the image onto USB-Stick with Unetbootin 5.81 on Windows. So I plugged the stick into the USB 2.0 port and started from the stick. But all that I got was that blue window with UNetbootin with Automatic boot in X seconds...But that loops forever. I than realized that my bios was up2date. But now to the real problem:When I startup my notebook it gets straight to the Boot Menu. This got 2 options: ATA HDD0 and PCI LAN.If I choose the HDD (where Ubuntu is installed) nothing happens. THe screen gots black for 1 or 2 seconds and the Boot Menu appears again.I first thought the grub loader is damaged, so I installed a grub bootloader repair image on USB and wanted to start that. But then I got that blue box from Unetbootin again looping forever  Bios is on default (Bios version: H3ET31WW 1.14)Embedded Controller Version: H3EC27WW 1.10Machine Type Model: 335496GHas anybody got an idea how to solve this problem? Maybe hardreset the BIOS (don't know how to do this) ?

Answer:Lenovo Edge E330 not booting

I am not sure why you would ever think about creating a bios boot disk with unetbootin. With a *nix based OS, you would use dd, with windows I have no idea.  I just know that it is not unetbootin.

It powered on normally and then went streight to a black screen with a white cursor blinking in the upper left corner. Im no computer whiz but I suspected it may have had something to do with the hard drive but with further investigation I found that the hard drive was just fine. Everything looks fine in bios as well so I am now compleetly stumped. Any help wold be greatly appreciated.

Okay, I am going to try and be as detailed as possible but if I leave out anything important let me know.

I was running Vista Ultimate 64-bit that had neither SP1 nor SP2 on it. I tried updating to SP1 as soon as it appeared on my Windows Update (surprisingly, not preceded by the Microsoft hotfix that I only now know exists for preventing SP1 failures...lot of good that did me). SP1 installed, seemingly, without a hitch and restarted my PC.

Immediately following that, however, Windows would not boot and would crash with a BSOD every single time. I could not even use a Vista Repair Disk which I have (complete with Start-up recovery) due to the BSOD. Luckily, however, I found a fix for the BSOD: I downloaded a System Rescue CD with bootable Linux on it and followed a detailed set of instructions to mount my disk partition with Vista on it and delete a file called $TxfLog in my C:/windows/$Extend/RmMetadata/ folder which was supposedly causing the BSOD. Apparently Windows checks that file to see if the HD is messed up and Vista SP1 had corrupted it - rendering my OS Boot process FUBARed.

So...after deleting the file, unmounting my system partition, and restarting my PC, the BSOD stopped appearing but I STILL couldn't boot. I would get an error code and then it'd hang. So, after this I ran my Vista Repair Disk and did a startup repair (actually I went through a cycle of repairing, rebooting, failing to boot, repairing again...up to eight times because I was told it sometimes t... Laptop Satellite L30 -psL33E ..........original HDD failed

Fitted new HDD, hitachi hts541616j9sa00.
Boot from recovery CD, this completes then computer switches off.

I restart and on screen it says wait while windows loads for first time.
This gets as far as the screen lighting up and the scrolling circle and then stops and the laptop just hangs there.

I left it for a couple of hours switch laptop off and then reboot.
Laptop screen then shows launch startup repair and start windows normally.

I've tried both options, the screen goes blank and then the same options appear it just sticks in this continuous loop.

Could this be problem with new HDD or restore disk any help appreciated

Don?t think this issue could be related to the HDD? but who knows? everything is possible but I think it?s improbably.

Did you check the memory modules?
From my knowledge such strange notebook behaviors can be related to a memory malfunction too.

But as I already said, we can always provides some suggestions and to be 100% sure what part is affected an notebook check would be necessary!

I almost think this thread's title says it all: it seems that after around a handful of successful boots, that after I enter my password successfully, the system transitions to the next window where it proceeds to hang indefinitely. At that point, I power down, wait a minute and then power up. 99.9% of the time the system will boot up successfully. I haven't had any luck figuring out the cause and just 'discovered' this SeverForums website.

Answer:Windows7 (64bit) booting fails every 5 or 6 times.

Confirm the 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) or C is Partition Marked Active

Then run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times to see if it finds anything to repair.

If this doesn't help post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

Dear Forum , usually I am using a LG External Super Multi DVD Rewriter Model GP08 NU10 - about 5 years old now - to boot Windows and Linux CDs&DVDS on my Lenovo machines. But on the E330 it doesn t work anymore. Can anyone explain me what to do?I have excluded everything from the boot order except the USB CD drive but it still does not work! and I powered up the USB ports permanently. Best,Andreas

Answer:Edge E330 booting from external drive

Hi, Andreas
I have a few questions about your issue: When the machine is first booting, you can press Enter repeatedly to bring up the startup interrupt menu. One of the options is to choose a temporary startup device. Are you able to press F12 to choose a temporary startup device and boot from the USB drive here? If not, what does the machine do when you attempt to do this?
Thanks in advance,

Question: Installation Fails

Please help me.

My sister is running Windows XP Home Edition. She was using Windows Installer 3.1. Then she tried to update to the newest version of Windows Installer. That failed miserably. Now neither installer program is working. Neither one is visible in Add/Remove Programs so we don't know how to uninstall either program.

She is completely unable to install any software whatsoever--including Microsoft Windows Installer Clean Up Utility.

When she tries to reinstall Windows Installer 3.1, she's told that there is a newer version on her PC. When she tries to reinstall the newer version, it tells her its incompatible with her system. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place!

Can any one help us?

Answer:Installation Fails

Download and run the windows installer cleanup utility from Microsoft and see if that solves the problem.

Hi TyLee, and welcome to TSF.

The Local Settings folder is hidden, that's why you cannot see it. To find it go to: Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > Under the View Tab select Show Hidden Files and Folders. Now when you go there, the Local Settings folder should show.

Yesterday my machine froze and I had to so a power off restart. Since then it will freeze during boot up, not always in the same place. Sometimes at the login screen, sometimes gets as far as loading the desktop, but it freezes every time.
If it gets as far as the desktop I am able to press alt-ctrl-delete and then click Task Manager but at this point the start menu and taskbar disappear.
System restore fails. I have also noticed that nothing seems to be being written to event logs.
If I do a diagnostic startup so that no services are running the system will boot into normal mode.
Works satisfactorily in Safe Mode.
Spec is HP dx2400 PC, Intel Core 2 duo E7400 processor, 3.25GB ram, running XPSP3.
Thsi is very similar to a problem I had last year:-
Perhaps foolishly, I have run the windows repair software from and it has made no difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know I need to move on to Windows 7 but this machine runs legacy software which will not work in W7 even in xp mode. I will make it an 'offline' workstation once the error is fixed.
Many thanks,

Hello everyone! I'm hoping some one can help me with a situation I have.

While recently using Nero 10's suite of programs I encountered a screen indicating several programs had newer versions and that I should update before continuing. I then updated the programs. The update process required a system reboot to complete the update, since part of the update process could not be completed while the system was running. After clicking on the "Reboot Now Button" the system went through a normal shutdown and start up process. However, after displaying the Windows 7 screen the system hung and I never saw the Windows 7 Logon screen.

At this point I powered down and restarted the computer. The computer displayed the "Windows did not shutdown properly last time" screen during the loading process. I then selected to finish booting in SAFE Mode. The computer then booted successfully and I was able to exercise the system. I then attempted to restart the computer from SAFE MODE but again encountered the "hanging" condition. I again attempted to reboot and once again received the "Windows did not shutdown properly last time" screen. Since booting into SAFE MODE hadn't solved the problem, I attempted to boot into SAFE MODE with networking. This caused the system to again "hang". In summary, I am able to boot into all but the SAFE MODE with networking capability, which reproduces the problem.

Since SAFE MODE failed... Read more

When I go to install WindowBlinds7, I get the following message:

WindowBlinds 6 shareware supports Windows Vista x64 platforms, but does not include support for Window XP/2003 x64 Platforms.

The enhanced version of WindowBlinds 6 does include files for Windows XP x64 platforms.

The install will not exit.

I click Cancel, in hopes of it letting me install, but it pops up saying:

Setup is not complete, blah blah blah,

You may run setup at a later time, blah blah,

To continue installing, click resume.

I click resume, and it returns to the initial error message.....
Only problem is, Im running Windows 7 64bit, not XP (And WindowBlinds obviously needs to update their error messages)

Any other programs like this that I can use?
Do you know how I can get this program running?

Do you know an easy way I can re-skin windows myself?

(I know how to do it the hard way, im just too lazy >_<)

Answer:installation of WindowBlinds7 fails....

Eh, got it installed, compatibility mode was on O.o

but, I can't get any new themes installed for it.

I can only get themes that are in the .wba format... >_< That soooooo lowers the variety....Well, I've found 2....I haven't found anything FOR ME, and if anybody know any good WindowBlinds themes that would fit a diehard computer nerd, dont hesitate to link me to it ;D

and the bootskin feature looks kewl

Well, I obviously don't have an issue at the moment, so delete this at will ;D

I have a netbook that came with the starter edition. I am trying to install the pro edition over it. The install dies and tells me I cannot install it and I need to select Windows Anytime Upgrade instead. However, that will not accept my license key from my pro edition. Am I stuck with a disk I cannot use now?
One of the install choices was to do a clean install and lose all of my files, applications, and settings. Is that my only choice?

Answer:installation/upgrade fails

This is because you are trying to in-place Upgrade, running the DVD from Starter. If you boot the Win7 DVD to clean install you would not have that error.

If you need to in-place Upgrade from Starter to Pro to preserve factory programs or utiltiies, MS wants you to use Anytime Upgrade. You may have found a limitation on which retail keys can be used.

There is a workaround to change between versions in Win7 by tricking the installer into thinking it is doing an alway-allowed same version Repair Install. I can provide it if you want.

If I interpret your post correctly, you're trying to update directly using the Media Creation Tool.

I suggest that you download the .iso instead. You can mount that directly in WIndows Explorer (from within Windows 8.1, I think 7 requires an additional utility) and run the upgrade from that.

It may not help, but you'll only need to download it once.

I am seeing error "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer's hardware." when my new installation tries to restart and boot from the hard disk.
Help please?

System is a Dell Dimension E520, OS is Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1.
I am using a reinstallation DVD for Dell PCs provided by my IT friend from work.
(Original computer came without an OS disk.)
This same version was used to install the OS on a WD 500GB drive 2 years ago, on the same system, when the original drive failed.
Now, the WD drive is also showing signs of dying.

The new drive is a Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
It is recognised by BIOS, and the system disk check tool passes it.

I booted from the Vista DVD and ran through the installation.
All seems well -- file copying takes about 15-20 mins -- until it tries to reboot, when it gives the error message:
"Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer's hardware."
Re-rebooting just gives the same error.

Clues please? It is really frustrating to fall at the first hurdle.

(Incidentally, I have not modified the BIOS boot order, so I had to manually select the DVD from the F2/F12? boot menu, subsequent reboots were from HDD.
Should I have changed the boot order setting to DVD first in BIOS for the installation process?)

I did spend an evening trawling answers online, but mostly this message seems to occur with Windows 7, and I drew a blank.
So I really hope you ca... Read more

I recently tried to resurrect my old HP Vectra (original drive had failed) by putting in a 80GB drive that was being used as a second drive on a different computer where it provided partition D and E while the first drive was C.I now plugged this second drive as the only drive into Vectra and ran XP service pack 3 cd to start installation. The XP CD showed the partitions on the drive now as C (NTFS)and E (Win32) and 46 MB free space. I deleted E and then created a new partition that contained all the free space. The new partition showed up as D.Now I formatted D with NTFS.The partition C still has lots of files and documents (but no OS) on it so I chose to install XP on newly created D instead. The installation started and reached the stage after copying of installation files where the XP says that PC will now reboot to continue installation- remove any floppy from the drive. Now when it reboots it ends up with a black screen with a blinking hyphen on the tops left that stays there forever.I have gone back to restart the install and over write the previous files with and without fresh format, the end result is the same. What is going wrong?

Last night I had decided to install Windows 10 on my MacBook Air,(2012 model I believe) after having Ubuntu 14.04 for about six months. I had made an ISO on a 16 gig flash drive with the Media creation tool, no problem at all. The install was flawless, until the very end where it says "taking care of a few things". I then got a black screen, and after a reboot, still a black screen. I managed to get into safe mode, however I did not know what to do to try and fix the issue in safe mode, so I attempted to do a reinstall with the menu when you hold the power button on startup(idk what it is called). I have attempted a reinstall three times, it gets past "resetting this PC", however it gets stuck each time on the install at 10%. Please help, I am afraid that I have bricked my laptop.

Hello good evening,
I was about to install new windows 7 32-bit/ultimate on my computer,
So i went to installation setup and chose 30Gb of memory for the OS, it made me to accept about 100 MB of memory for a recovery that i dont know alot about what it was.
so i let it install and after rebooting, the windows goes to black screen of loading windows for the 1st time and never showed up, the only thing that could be seen was mouse cursor.

I tried to give the OS memory about 45GB, but it failed again with the same matter.

My PC Specs are:

HDD: near 160 GB...i gave 30 Gb 1st time, and saw the problem then gave 45Gb, and the problem remained..

CPU: intel pentium 4, 3,20GHz 3,21GHz

RAM: 1GB...I've noticed that 64-bit needed 2GB of rams, therefore i tried to install Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit

Graphics card: NVIDIA Geforce 7600 GS - 512 MB of ram

Optical Driver : Ofcourse. It is DvD Drive.

Dell Dimension 8250

Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3
111GB hard drive (98GB free space)

I have a Del computer (spec above) which has WIndows XP Professional installed. I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and it appears that apart from a Creative Labs Gameport driver (I intend to replace the video card) there should be no problems doing a clean install of Window 7 (I am aware that it is not possible to upgrade from XP). However, during the installation I got the following message.

"Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation."

I then looked on the Internet for advice and ran a chkdsk /r /f check which found no errors. I then disabled my antivirus program (BitDefender) and tried again but got the same message.

Does anyone have any further advice to allow me to install Windows 7 on this computer?

If you get an error message saying "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP", this should help:

This problem can occur if the Cryptographic Service is Disabled in services.msc or a file within %Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 folder has become corrupt.

To correct this issue, first go Start > Run and enter services.msc
A list of Windows Services should now appear on your screen, scroll down the list until you find Cryptographic Services. Right click this and select properties. Now ensure that the startup type is set to automatic and click the start button in that window if the service status is stopped.

If the problem persists, go to run and type in cmd then click ok.
Next type in the following commands, at the end of each line press the return key on your keyboard

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Now attempt to run the DX9 installer again.

If this does not help go to Start > Run and type in %temp%
Delete all items in this folder and attempt setup again. If you are using Windows XP on a FAT32 formated hard disk, you should also run chkdsk (right click on hard disk in my computer > properties > tools tab > error checking > check now button).

I'm running Win8 CP 64-bit.

I ran the Upgrade Assistant program & purchased my license/key.
I cancelled the download as I already have the RTM from a few months ago on a bootable flashdrive.

I boot from the USB drive, choose my location from a standard looking Microsoft dialog, click Install.
Oh, I chose to keep my current programs. Don't really want to track down and customise about 30 odd extra programs if that can be avoided.

It then says to remove the install media & restart the computer as normal. It says that setup will continue after that, but it doesn't.

How can I check the reason? Is there a windows setup log somewhere?

Hi everyone,

I am clearly overasked. I got a customer, that has a computer with Windows 7 x64 installed. He didn't update since 2011, so I tried to get his computer up-to-date.

I installed all necessary drivers from the manufactor sites.
I installed Net.Framework 4.5 just to be sure.
I deactivated his AntiVirus application.
I tried CheckSUR.exe and sfc /scannow.
I tried chkdsk /f
I tried deactivating everything in his autostart (through msconfig).
I tried Windows Update and even downloading the Service Pack itself from the site.
But everything I try to install Service Pack 1 on his windows ends up with this error: (WindowsUpdate.log was a little too long)

I can't get Service Pack installed. It fails every time after the restart and configuration on 10%.

Does anyone has a hint?

PC is Mesh Elite Quad Express-PCA currently with Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor states that PC OK for Windows 7 64-bit, BUT a Custom Installation will be required. Capability also confirmed via Control Panel\Performance Information& Tools\System.
I've purchased Windows 7 Home Premium (Full version). Attempting to launch the 64-bit installation (setup.exe) simply displays a message to the effect that "this file is not compatible with the version of Windows installed on your PC". Looks as though the 32-bit version would install OK.
Impossible to reach either Microsoft or Mesh for support. What is wrong, and what do I need to do to achieve successful installation of W7 64-bit? Please provide full details.

Answer:windows 7 64-bit installation fails

You cannot do an automatic upgrade from a 32bit version of Windows to a 64bit version - you must select the custom install option in the Windows 7 installer.
Before you start, you should be aware that doing this this will mean you must back up all your data files before starting, as the installer will remove all files and previously installed programs. Once Windows 64bit is running you can reinstall your programs and restore your files, but be aware that if any of your software is not compatible with a 64bit operating system Windows will default to running in 32bit mode.

Hi, I am having trouble to upgrade my Java software.

When I tried to upgrade my java software to version 7 update 15, I first received an error message "jre1.7.0_15java_sp.dll is corrupt". I then tried to uninstall the old version. This failed using the normal uninstall procedure (no error msg). Then I tried JavaRa, MS Fixit and Windows Installer Cleanup. None worked. Finally, I succeeded using IOBit Uninstaller v2.4 with the 'strong removal' option, thereby deleting all registry entries of JRE. This seems to work as I no longer see Java in my list of installed programs.
I have downloaded the offline version of Java for Windows: jre-7u15-windows-i586.
WHen running the installer, I get to the installation progress screen but the installation does not start and remains at status 'installing' indefinitely. I run the installer in administrator mode. I have already tried running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP and 7 without success. I have also disabled my virusscanner.
Oh..and one more thing: I have also tried to perform a Windows system restore. However, this just remained in 'preparing for system restore' mode forever.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Whenever I remove the USB and restart the computer, the screen stays stuck on the Asrock logo. Additionally, I am unable to get into the BIOS unless I put the USB back in. If I leave the USB in and restart then Windows 10 just boots up fine. Moreover, I tried installing Windows 10 on the SSD with the HDD both plugged and unplugged. Both decisions had no influence whatsoever.

I tried changing boot priorities in the BIOS but this did not help. Neither did changing the SSD to AHCI.

Now, I have an old rig so I saw that there is a BIOS update for my motherboard. But, I see all these warnings around it. I am not very experienced with computers, so should I just do it? It may not even solve my problem, but at this point I am ready to do everything.

Thank you for reading

Answer:Windows 10 installation USB fails

Hi Provin915. Welcome to the TenForums @Provin915

Not exactly how you made your USB Bootable with Windows 10 but I would like to suggest you use the media creation tool outlined in this tutorial. Since you are going to put windows on the SSD please disconnect the HDD. Connect it after Windows is installed.

You said this is an old rig but not sure how old. Mine the tips about secure boot and Fast boot in the tutorial. Before installing Windows and after booting from the new USB key please delete the partitions on the SSD and let Windows create.

Not sure if your BIOS has the ability to boot UEFI. If it does you will want to use GPT partition structure. You can use these commands to wipe SSD and set to GPT.

When the first screen comes up press shift + F10. In the command window that opens run the following commands. This will erase the entire hard drive!

List disk
select disk 0 (assumes SSD is identified as disk 0 and is where you want to install Windows)
Convert gpt (if required for UEFI)
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

This process will install the Creators Update on your device. May be a few wrinkles to work out. For now I would leave BIOS alone.
