Typing when suddenly no characters appear on screen

Question: Typing when suddenly no characters appear on screen

Windows Vista Home version: HP SR 2163WM computer. This happens randomly whenever I'm typing. Might be in Word or during this message (just happened when I was typing "during"). Suddenly the cursor is gone, no letters are appearing, etc. This isn't the buffer just overloading, the cursor just disappears and I can't type. It's like it jumps off the page, but it's very irritating (just happened again on "like").

Preferred Solution: Typing when suddenly no characters appear on screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Typing when suddenly no characters appear on screen

Would be hard to say without actually seeing it happen... Reinstall mouse and keyboard driver? I'm not sure, maybe corrupt registry. i'm just guessing, if you can provide any other details please do

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.

As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)

Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?

Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.

I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Using a Lenovo Yoga 910.  All I want to do is to be able to quickly and easily insert the registered trademark symbol  ® without copying and pasting.  I use this symbol often and am frustrated that I can't figure out how to insert it quickly.

Answer:Typing special characters - ®

Nomally you can use CTRL+ALT+R   is the key combination to insert the ® symbol in some applications like MS Office etc.and ALT + 0174 will also insert the ® symbol in most places that the CTRL+ALT+R key combinantion does not work, such as in this forum.   Cheers,

I cleaned my keyboard and it started malfunctioning about 10 minutes after Happens to thw following characters I've found l =;lp=poo=poa= select all and several more

Can we customize a key so that when pressed it will type several characters?
I would use that function to quickly enter my ?user name? or email address when accessing internet pages that require filling such fields plus the Password.

Thank you for any help.

Answer:Typing several characters with one keystroke

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.

If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.

Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.

If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

When attempting to type in MS Word 2000 on win98 platform all of the characters are covered by a growing block of black. I have found that my Yoga 900 will regularly insert two characters when I have only hit a key once. I might type "stop" (4 keystrokes) but I find the word "stopp" has been entered. This is not a problem with one key, it happens on lots of keys, as shown in the video:The problem with duplicate characters It seems to happen most if you type the key "gently", so the characters you press with pinkies and ring fingers are more likely to exhibit the problem, but the video shows this is happens on any key -- it is not a problem with just certain keys. I am getting a new laptop because of an issue with the Yoga 900 waking from sleep when picked it up:(My problem with the Yoga waking when I pick it up) I'll see if this new issue is a problem on the replacement Yoga. Note that Lenovo has been great, and is sending me a replacement laptop based on the waking problem. I have a brand new Satellite C50-A-1CK which is perfect for my needs EXCEPT I continually get double characters appearing on screen when typing which is:
A. VERY frustrating
B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.

Please does anyone know of a fix for this? It can affect any key on the keyboard and it doesn't matter if I type slow or quick, press the keys firmly or as light as possible.

Have checked for firmware updates but none available.

Thanks in advance!

I hope that someone can help you and me on this!

I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.

Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.

I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.

Really frustrating

My keyboard is typing correctly in Word but types nonsense when I type in either a browser window or in my email. If I type a web address in Chrome, Explorer or Firefox it comes out as random letters, symbols and numbers and the same if I try to type an email in yahoo or gmail. As I say, it is fine typing in Word. Any ideas gratefully received.

PS I have been into Control Panel and made sure regional settings and keyboard setting are for English (UK)

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

Hi nfarrier, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Yes, it can be virus. Did you made any changes on the PC recently?

As mentioned by Yard Dog, run Malwarebyts to scan for malwares. Run antivrus, and do SFC/SCANNOW to check for any errors.

Hi, hoping someone here can help me...

Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).

Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.

Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.

Any ideas?

Hi. I use gedit as editor in my Linux systems (SUSE and Fedora); there I find that I can't type in accented characters like I used to do in Windows.

In the text editor in Windows, even using an English keyboard configuration, I could type in accented characters by entering a combination of Alt+<ASCIIcode>, for example Alt+130 would type in the accented 'e' character; this sequence doesn't work in Linux.

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem ?

Answer:new problem, keyboard is not typing accurate characters,

There are a mix of ideas here: not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Do NOT check any box you see about removing the software. The above is not the usual uninstall, it just disengages the software from the hardware. When you restart the computer it will find your keyboard as new hardware then re-install the software from the supplied drivers. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?

Answer:Laptop keys also typing adjacent characters

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

Answer:windows live mail typing characters

I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

For some reason, there always seem to be a second delay on the keys on the keyboard, including the numeric keypad. Many times, either a character was skipped or the character showed up twice.
Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Wrong characters have just sprouted in some places. Things like é instead of ?, for instance.

I've spotted them in two places only : comments included in Properties of Macrium Reflect backup files, and one blog I follow regularly through Firefox.

That's the reason I suspect it's Windows-related and not a Macrium problem. It happened suddenly with no obvious trigger beforehand. It's the sort of bad transcription which often happens in emails.

Now the same blog displays correctly again. Any ideas ?

Hi. I'm using Windows 7 64bit Professional. It's configured for English and the System Local for non-Unicode is English (RP Philippines).

I've been able to copy and past Chinese characters from Word --> Notepad -->Chrome/Firefox/IE for work (I was localizing a website) with no problems until last night.

Today, when I tried to copy-paste a few chinese characters to Word, I was suddenly only seeing square boxes. I know this means that the font or app can't recognize or render the characters. My questions is WHY? and how to Fix it? It frustrates me since it was fine yesterday. I haven't installed anything new or changed any setting that I know of.

The only change would be a windows update KB915597 that automatically installed last night.

So how about posting what the make and model of the device you are having issues with.If this is an iPhone, start by doing a cold reboot. Hold down the home and power buttons until the phone restarts. Do you have a protective screen cover on it? if so, try cleaning it and if that doesn't work, remove it. Even if you don't have a screen cover, try cleaning the screen with a soft cloth dampened with water.

My HP Pavilion dv4-1123US has suddenly started typing every keystroke twice.  I get double letters for everything typed.  This is happening for every key, letters, numbers, backspace, cap lock.  PPAASSWWOORRDD.  Etc.  I am forced to use a virtual keyboard that came with Kaspersky Internet Security. I tried uninstalling the device driver for the keyboard in Device manager and letting Windows reinstall it during reboot.  This did not work. I running Windows 7 64-bit. Anyone else having this issue?  How can I fix it.

Answer:Suddenly my keyboard is typing every letter twice

This might be with the keyboard settings. Click Start, Control Panel and open Keyboard Properties. Try to change the Repeat Delay and Repeat Rate settings which should solve your issue.

This is about to drive me completely crazy in fact I have to resist throwing the computer across the room when it happens. I have an ASUS laptop running Windows 8.1. Every time I am typing the palm of my hand gently touches the synaptic mouse pad which causes the Windows charm bar and time and date window to appear. I have to stop typing and click back in to the document I am working on to continue. I have already gone into PC Settings - Corners and Edges and turned off "Allow switching between recent apps" and "When I point to the upper right corner, show the charms" both of these have been turned off. Does anyone know how to stop this from happening? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Charms bar and date suddenly appear when typing

You need to make the changes in the Synaptic touchpad properties. Or use something like Start8, that you can disable the charms and edges, if all you are doing is working in the desktop 100% of the time.

Tapping, edge motion and edge swipe in the touchpad properties would cause the behavior.

Hi guys!

My PC is a year and a half old.
HP m7760n
2.13Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
Nvidia GEforce 7600GT graphics card
Running Windows Vista.

A couple of days ago, it suddenly turned itself off. When it started up again, a strange ASCII character appeared scattered on the startup screens (the character is "à" to be exact). The "hp invent" screen that always pops up came up with vertical streaks and took much longer than usual, then the computer tried to recover from the crash.

It recovered the first time, then crashed suddenly again soon after. I left it off for a while thinking it might have been overheating. Turned it back on a couple of hours later and everything seemed fine until... another crash. Trying to start it caused the same thing to happen (the ASCII symbol appears, takes a long time to startup, tries to repair) and it subsequently wouldn't bring up Vista anymore.

Tonight, I took out the CPU fan and heat sink and removed all the dust in there, as well as removing as much from the case in general as I could.

The computer started up, I had it repair itself twice and Vista ran! I immediately made the system restore DVDs and backed up as much as I could. During the backup, it crashed as usual and on start-up, the symbol was back and it needed to repair. After repair it shut itself down and I haven't restarted it since. I haven't tried the system restore yet because I didn't get to back everything up yet, and was hoping s... Read more

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. hi bijoy3d,
Welcome to the Forums.
What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

my mother has a Toshiba Equium, and has just phoned to say that its stopped typing the letters "s", "d" and "g" - does anyone have any ideas why this would happen?

Thanks, Clare

Answer:Re: Equium's keyboard has suddenly stopped typing some letters

Looks like a keyboard malfunction...
In my opinion you should contact the ASP technician in order to replace the keyboard.
The point is that it?s not possible to replace the single buttons... of course you can replace the key caps but nit the full button...

Therefore a keyboard replacement would be necessary in order to solve this problem.

I usually like to leave my computer on overnight. So I go offline, disable my wireless, and put on a video playlist in full screen to help me sleep. Anyway, today I woke up and saw the Windows Media Player no longer full screen, and the wireless switch was actually turned on. This is strange because I know I turned wireless off and I frequently check my system with Malwarebytes.

What could this be? Did someone snoop in my computer? Thanks in advance for the support.

About 5 months ago, I started seeing what appeared to be asian writing in the top of my screen. I also noticed that when I opened a new tab, they would jump on the new tab, like I was being tracked. There would be a few at first, then the longer I was on my PC, the more characters appeared. After a little research, I was able to get rid of it.  It appeared to be some Firefox issue. Well, now there are some other characters, more like the left corner of my screen. Lines, sometimes dotted and occasionally boxes or "L"s. Also, my sound randomly turns off and my PC doesn't think the speakers are plugged in when they are. Long story short, I'm infected and I want to use the Rkill. I used it once before, but it was a long time ago and I'm sure there have been changes since 2004! Lol! Any tips before I take the plunge, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am using Windows 95 and Explorer 5.0.

I recently went to a web page and saw English words on the left side of the web page. When I went to run a video from that sight, it said that I need a macroflash something or another, which I downloaded directly from that site.

The video then played just fine, HOWEVER, the words on the left side of the web page are now all garbled, they look like greek letters.

If I move my mouse over the garbled letters, in the links show up in English at the bottom of my screen in my Explorer window, however they still look greek on the web page.

I have viewed this web page from work, and it is in English, so something must now be wrong on my end.

Can someone guide me through the process of getting this garbled mess gone.

Could I change the screen font? How would I do that?

I just started experiencing the problem with the repeating key on the lock screen. When I do WINDOWS key and L the window locks like it is suppose to however the password box fills like a keyboard key is being continually pressed. The fix for me is to unplug the usb then replug in the keyboard. at that point i can log in as expected. This only happens on the lock screen. Any other time there is no evidence of repeating characters.  my keyboard is a "Razer BlackWidow Ultimate" I have verified that the drivers are most current using device manager and via the utility that came with the keyboard. the software version is 1.18. the keyboard driver ver is 6.2.9200 16384 The character that is repeating on the lock screen is either a capitol i or a lower case L.

Answer:lock screen repeating characters

tomfx Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about the lock screen repeating characters and wanted to help. I have a Corsair gaming keyboard and it supports macros -- which can be software, but also loaded into the firmware of the keyboard, such that, they are implemented regardless of the OS that I am using at the time. Your problem sounds like the combination of the Windows key + the "L" key invokes a macro that repeatedly generates an "l" key code until you disconnect the keyboard.  I don't know how Razer implements keyboard macros, so I can't tell you where to look, but it's worth examining.Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

I updated my PC last night, it wasnt a big update or anything and i tried booting it up this morning. It was taking forever to boot so I had the bright idea of restarting it via the power button . Now its stuck on a black screen after the Acer splash. I don't have any recovery disc/usbs. My PC is an Acer running on windows 10 (originally 7). Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a pic.

Answer:Black screen with characters on bootup after update

Hi, you may be lucky if you use a Win 10 boot disk to boot from (iso's freely downloadable - see Tutorial section or MS media creation tool) and run System Restore from the Advanced Recovery options.

Failing that, you might be able to restore the backup registry having booted from a suitable boot medium.

Before the above you might want to make sure you have backups of any important data (e.g. using a boot disk such as Kyhi's, available from the top of the Software and Apps section.

Note: you have won the grand prize: discovering how invaluable disk imaging is- we strongly and repeatedly recommend disk imaging - e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for the images which then allows you to recover your system to a previously working state relatively quickly, even if you have to replace your disk, and also provides a full backup.

I am having problems with my Satellite M30. It shows random characters or signs over the picture. Other than that computer is running fine. I thought that it might have been virus, because I can see the Toshiba and Centrino Logo fine, it starts happening when it loads Windows.

So I reinstalled it but random characters came up on the screen even during the installation. Can somebody advise, what this could be?

My thoughts are either bad graphics card or ribbon cable from MOBO to LCD.

For me it looks also like a GPU malfunction... what you could is to connect the external monitor to this notebook. If the same strange signs, characters will be visible on the second screen then the GPU is faulty...

Well, this would be the worst case because the whole motherboard must be replaced if a GPU chip malfunctions...

I simply used "Windows 7 USB/DVD" to burn ISO Windows 7 (64 bit/ 32 bit - Both versions contained in the same ISO file) to a DVD disc and to a USB Flash.

I format all drives to NFTS format, I set one drive as primary and set it active. So there is no problem with formatting. My computer now is clear.

XP desk top computer won't boot. Upon turning machine on, only a black screen appears with seven "characters" of: a backward 'f', square happy face, heart, cap letter 'A', lower case 'f', a comma, and what looks like a bell or a Christmas tree, and then a blinking cursor. Hit enter or any other key, and all that happens is a repeat of this line of characters.Cannot reach safe mode, not even by repeatedly pressing F8 with power turn-on. I can get to F1, F6 (I think I recall), and F10, but none of these keys appear to be the ones to lead me to be able to load the XP desktop. This is my mother's (82 years) computer, purchased three months ago. I am troubleshooting this from my computer, as I can't reach this forum from her machine! We had additional hard drive memory and ram installed upon purchase and it was performing (reasonably) okay until this. NOTE: Day before this problem, I attempted to install a Linksys (Cisco) WPC54G wireless-G notebook adaptor 6 to my father's 5 to 6-year-old Sony Vaio laptop so he could get Internet and e-mail via the modem on my mother's machine. I ran into all sorts of problems, it is still not working. This attempted, failed installation could be a coincidence of timing, or maybe part of the problem? What is this line of characters? A system crash, a virus? I am so frustrated. Also, I see now that this  computer did not come with rescue disks (arrggh). Any ideas, please?Lisa B.

Hi Simon

Don?t panic! This is not a malfunction or a problem?
The native resolution of your internal screen should be higher as 1024x768 therefore you should leave the notebook running with the highest possible resolution.

This issue was discussed already in this forum. You should check this:

about a week ago, i left the computer for a little bit. when i returned - here starts the problems. suddenly when ever i type things on a form online or email online, etc (not word though) the computer screen scrolls up and down quickly about an inch over and over while typing. or sometimes the screen flickers with sort of a double vision thingy also when i type - kind of like its going to go out, but doesnt. at the same time this happened, my shift key started acting like a 'back' key, so whenever i try to type a capital letter, it goes back to the previous screen, thus deleting everything i've done. verrrrrry frustrating. ran virus scans, adware scans, etc - no help. tried deleting and reinstalling display drivers and keyboard drivers - no help. did several system restores to different past points before the problem started - no help. bought a new keyboard - no help.

oh i also checked sticky keys etc - they aren't on.....

does anyone know what i can do short of a complete system restore or buying a new computer
please let there be someone who can help me..

sorry no caps for obvious reasons stated above.....

It does remember everything I type as I type during the lag, and it posts it correctly. I am curious if I may have tuned something incorrectly to cause this. I thought maybe spell checker, but I do not recall seeing one on the computer.

Any help with this matter is greatly appreciated.

Greetings, comperroruter.

Sounds like something's eating your resources - I'd suggest running CCleaner, click on Tools, Startup, save that page to a text file, and attach it here.

BTW: what OS and service pack # are you running? And, does the symptom change if you're online/offline?

Why does my screen turn black for seconds back and forth while i am typing? I have Vista Home

Answer:Black screen while typing

Have you verified the VGA cord is securely connected to your computer (assuming, of course, you are referring to a desktop and not a laptop)?

We have an Acer ES1 laptop where the screen flashes on every single keystroke you make on the keyboard.  Doesn't matter what application, every single key you press the screen flashes.  White flips to black and black flips to white on pretty much all app's. We've updated display drivers, installed all updates that are available through ACER.  Uninstalled a bunch of things that were included with the laptop.  Tried disabling various things in the settings to see if they were affecting it.   Nothing has worked and I'm not sure what else to try.  Anything else people can think of?

Hello everyone!

I have come to this site as a guest many times in the past, and usually I find the solution to my problems by searching. However, this time I cannot find anything on my issue.

I just built a new pc a couple of weeks ago. It runs stable, I had no lockups, the hardware monitor always reports a good status, the temperature is cool.

I turn it off at night, and when I turned it on again in the morning three days ago, it wouldn't post, basically locked up with a flashing screen that showed grey lines, bars, boxes, some letters and characters. I turned it off, turned it back on, it booted fine. Yesterday morning I had no problems at all. This morning it did the same thing. Again, I turned it off, turned it back on, same flashing screen. The 3rd time the screen did the same thing but it actually started going to Windows. Upon turning it back on for the 4th time, it came up fine. I was wanting to take a picture of the screen, but now it won't do it anymore.

My question, is it more likely to be a bad video card or a bad cpu? All parts are new, and I have 3 more days of exchange period on the video card. Unfortunately I don't have any replacement parts to test it with. I ran PCDR and PC Certify, both didn't come up with any errors. I have already reseated video card and ram.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!
Thank you in advance.

mmm... it sounds that it might be bad memory...

windows xp, new Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. Why won't the the screen keep up with my key board when I type? It doesn't matter if it is an external keyboard or the laptop keyboard. I have Avast running, and have tried shutting down, no difference. Please help.

Answer:Delay from keyboard to screen in typing

Check task manager to see what % your CPU is running. You may have some malware or failty software that is occupying almost all the CPU time.

There is a video lag in screen response time.  It takes longer to load images and there is a small lag in the time between when a letter is typed and when it shows on the screen.I have both shut down and done restarts but no joy.At one restart, the screen paused as if half-way drawn and then continued on.Has my video driver, card gone bad?

Answer:Delay in typing and screen response

Just a guess without more info like model number and stuff- hard drive about to fail.  Studders and lag often can be a indication of the hard drive failing.  If you have more than one hard drive in laptop try changing the cache in windows to the other drive and see if issue goes away.  Did you try an external monitor? Same result?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

FYI, you should NEVER clean the registry.

Please follow this guide here to perform a System File Check of Windows:
