Preferred Solution: Lock Windows after a period of time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lock Windows after a period of time

will you explain a little more clearly what you want to do.. and please remove the link from your signiture.

I am not quite sure where to it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

Answer:Vista will password lock when computer is idle for a period of time

Right click on your Desktop and click on Personalise. Click Screensaver in the new window. In the Screensaver window, uncheck "On resume display logon screen", click OK and the problem should be fixed!

I took spare hard drive I had and installed 8 on my Dell notebook. Everything went well all driver loaded and I have been playing with it for a couple of days now, I like it. The only problem I'm having is after hours, I never really timed it, my computer shuts down and I have to restart it. Was wondering if anyone else was having this issue. I don't use it on battery for the most part and leave it plugged in. I checked power management, everythng is set correctly.

Answer:windows 8 shut down on its own after a period of time

Hi, welcome to forums...
Have you installed Windows 8 correctly? Which beta you are using right now? Did you let the notebook plugged in most time, if that's the case, you need to troubleshoot the battery

when i come to use my pc after a period of non activity 3o minutes, approx, the sound disappears. if i reboot the sound is sound device is c-media AC97 i think? n vidia g force ???? if thats any more help.

Answer:windows xp pro loses sound after a period of time.

I can only make a guess here. I would assume that you have onboard sound, and that other than the sound dying, the computer is behaving normally. I assume also that when you reboot you don't actually switch off the speaker power. This would lead me to think that there is a hardware problem in your onboard sound circuit. If I'm right, then I think your best bet would be to disable the onboard sound and fit a pci sound card. You can get them for less than 10, although for quality sound you would need to spend about twice that amount.

Hello, my laptop is having difficulty getting past the starting windows screen. The problem I've diagnosed is that the hard drive has no activity for a while (5-7 Minutes), and then once it spins up its fine from there. The logging in screen works well, and fast, the logging out is fine as well. Sometimes there's simliar problems with shutting down. It will sit at shutting down for 3-7 mins after it successfully went through the logging off section in under 3 seconds. I have tried restoring windows OEM built in to my laptop, also through a CD, both ways, my HD was formated. I've ran spyware, malware, registry cleaners many of times with no luck. Please help!

Answer:"Windows Starting" Screen For Extended Period of Time

1) How long does it take to boot to safe mode?2) DO NOT use registry cleaners. They CAUSE problems, they do not cure anything.

Hello, and thank you soo much for helping!!

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate Home Edition with unknown service pack addition. The machine is an inspiron 1720 and is about 1.5 years old.

The problem I am having is that my machine will freeze after about 15-20 minutes when it is left alone. If I am using it it runs fine. But say I leave and come back about 30 minutes later it will be completely frozen. I will have to hold the power off button to turn it off and then turn it back on.

Just today a problem appeared from the computer saying "A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly."

My pc randomly reboots itself after a period of time. It usually happens when Im running about 3-4 IE browsers, AIM, and Outlook Express for a while. i thought it was my overclocked CPU that was the problem, so i disabled over heat turn-off in the BIOS. Could there be errors in my registry?

Athlon 2500+ XP overclocked to 3400+ (42 C at rest)
Abit NF7-S2 Motherboard

Answer:PC Reboots itself after being on for a period of time

That processor is seriously overclocked.

Overclocking reduces the lifespan of the hard ware and also overclocks the RAM and PCI bus, so have you tried not overclocking the system?

There is no point in turning off the overheating monitor in the BIOS if the processor isn't overheating, which it doesn't appear to be doing if its temperature is only 42 degrees.

I am currently running Combofix on my laptop, however I am a bit worried about how long it is taking.

It at present only states:

"C:\Program Files\network monitor\netmon.exe"

It has been like this for 15 minutes, should I be worried?

Hello, I'm sure Shawn is aware of this setting, and I'm sure he'll eventually read this, and can link me to the post to how to do it =)

I have my computer set up to when it is idle after 5 minutes, it will turn the screen blank for 3 seconds then it will show the lock screen. Sometimes I'm at the computer desk busy doing something non-computer related, and all of a sudden I notice in the corner of my eye that the screen goes blank. I had the computer set up to whenever that happened I grab the mouse real quick and move it to come right back to whatever was showing on the screen before it goes to the lock screen. Reason why I want to catch it right in time is so I don't have to re-type the password at the lock screen. There is a setting somewhere that lets me do that. Where is it again?

So I have a somewhat halfway decent computer on windows 8.1 intel core i3-2130 cpu 3.40 ghz with 6 gb of ram 64 bit system that has been a consistently good computer for doing the basics google searching youtube playing small games even able to run smite on lowest with decent frames per second and minimal lag but ever since yesterday this computer is trash

it started when even at the desktop it would take twice as long for everything to work like using the search bar or starting smite would all take longer even some instant things became 2 second things smite would lag like crazy and completely froze or crashed multiple times which is all completely new things to me it seemed to lag more oddly enough after using the text chat feature

these problems were hard to solve as even the desktop would freeze when i tried to get some of the newest computer updates i had to shut my computer down 20 times since yesterday which cant be healthy

after a bit i got stuck in the this pc needs to restart blue screen loop so i listened to a youtube video that told me how to stop it using command prompt it did it one more time still afterwards then went back to normal all ran fine so i played a game of smite halfway thru it lagged hard then crashed at the very end

My computer is set to automatically lock after 10 minutes of user idle. I want to run a task when I log on, but only if the machine has previously been idle for an hour. This is so the task only runs when I've actually been away from the computer, not just if it's timed out. Is this possible?

Answer:Run task on unlock after certain period of time

1. Have you tried task scheduler - create task -... triggers - new -begin .. - on WS unlock
Then once it is setup disable it. But you would have to enable it if you knew how long the machine would be unattended.
I did not see any option for the task to run only if idle for 1 hour though.

2. Or you could not use task scheduler - just set up a .bat file and run it manually as needed.

Ok, we are setting a scheduled task to wake up all of our computers at 6am every morning from standby. Creating a scheduled task to wake them up isn't the hard part, we've already set that up.

I am concerned though that all the computers waking up at the exact same time will create too much stress on our power circuits.

Is there a way to setup a scheduled task to run anytime between say 6am and 6:05am and it chooses anytime during that 5 minute period to run?

(We cant setup scheduled tasks on each computer manually, I am talking about thousands of computers here)

Answer:XP - set scheduled task to run any time during a period

How are you using a scheduled task to wake all your machines up? I know it can be done, but I'm more interested in your method.

I guess my point is if you're using some kind of script to wake them up by name, and you have a list of names, couldn't you just break up the list into multiple lists and multiple tasks at the times you want?

Hello, been a while. Here is my problem. I have a Dell XPS 7100 desktop PC running Windows 7 home premium that a bought from a family member. Everything has been fine for the last year until now. I would wake up in the morning and the computer would not wake up. The power light is on but nothing would get the screen to come on. I have to hold the power button down and force a restart. After the restart things seem to be fine until after it has been idle for a length of time then it freezes again. I have already changed the sleep settings to never and changed the USB port settings to stay active and not close to save power. Now the computer still freezes but I can see the desktop. Nothing works, mouse, keyboard, ctrl-alt-del, nothing. Any help would be appreciated. I thought it could be a video driver issue, but it freezes with the desktop open.

Answer:Screen freezes after a period of time.

Turn on Driver Verifier and see if that gets the system to crash instead of freeze. Then provide us the crashdump.

I have been getting these BSoD's for a while now, and I have tried to figure them out, but I can't seem to. It's normally a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" or something along those lines. It generally happens when I try to play any intensive games. I have tried updating my drivers, or at least my graphic drivers.

My Specs:
Age: A year and a few months.
OS: Windows 7 Professional x64 (Service Pack 1 - Retail)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU q6700
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 260
Sound Card: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty

I am unable to preform the 'perfmon /report' as it gives me this error:
The interface is unknown.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Multiple BSoD over a period of time.

There are two causes:

1. Your Death Adder mouse software driver is the main cause, please update its driver
Razer Drivers

2. sptd.sys, part of Deamon Tools and Alcohol 120%

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads
You can use MagicDisc as an alternative.

Can anyone advise of this? What could be causing my Computer Shutdown so often ?

Answer:PC Shuts down after a long period of Time

it could be any one of many reasons, and we'll need a bit more information before we can offer any help.1. How old is the computer?2. Which operating system is installed?3. When it shuts down, are you doing anything, or does happen just as much when you're not using the computer?4. If it happens when you are using the computer, is there any particular pattern - does one action seem to trigger it?5. After a shut-down, does the machine start normally?

I recently assembled a new rig, meant for gaming. I've updated everything with the latest drivers and all. My problem is this: after a certain amount of time, be it in a game or on a web page, my computer reboots. I haven't been able to narrow down the reason or the culprit, but I was suspecting my video card and my hard drive.

- ATI Radeon HD 4870
- Seagate Barracuda 500GB (fw:3.AAK)
* The rest of my system's specs are in the CPUZ dump I've attached (I believed it was the best way to detail my hardware )

How did I narrow it down to those two? For starters, I have a hunch I don't have enough cooling equipment in my computer case. The thing is, I don't know "how much" is enough or too little. I also haven't found a utility that will show me the temps, besides the system BIOS, but I wanted something that would show me the temps when the parts are working full throttle. So, I believed it was the video card because of some odd glitches I see while playing Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion. When some transparency shaders are shown in the game, the screen shows a diagonal tear going right across my screen from top right to bottom left, corner to corner. By tear, I mean a kind of misalignment. Another occasion where I've seen these glitches was while playing Crysis. I'd see the same diagonal tear, but also it would be accompanied by an odd, black, thick border on the bottom of my screen and the right side. Next to the borders there wer... Read more

Hi thanks for reading, I have a really weird problem with my PC, which I built myself at the end of last year.

It worked fine until, some months ago, when I was playing Call of Duty 4, the frame rate dropped drastically (I play it all High smoothly with an XFX 8600 GT). I thought it strange but expected it to stop in a few moments, but after a few seconds the whole computer shut off.

This had never happened before, so thinking it was some random error I switched it on, went off for awhile and when I came back it was off once more. I started it up again only to have it shut off by itself again after some booting.

Desperate, this repeated for a couple of times till I opened the casing cover, checked everything was connected, closed the casing and started it up. However, this time I had left my computer tower lying on the floor, instead of it standing straight up as it was previously. Strangely, it didn't shut off.

This works until now- a day ago I stood the tower straight up while it was on. It didn't turn off for a long time (about an hour or so) then it shut off. So now it's lying on the floor again.

Please help if you can! I have no idea what's happening...

I do have some other problems with my PC since I am a completely amateur to PC building and was rather surprised to find my rig works the first time after assembly, but I'm sure that they're not related to this. I'm thinking it's a cooling problem but I've no idea where t... Read more

Hello everyone -

I would like to express my sincere thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. I am completely baffled by an ongoing occurence and I hope that you can help me. I am running WIndows XP pro on a dell inspiron 8600 1.8 pentium M w/2 gig RAM and a built in ethernet card. Each day, at least once, some days as many as 5 or 6 times, I am suddenly unable to access the internet. The browser I am using is IE 6.0.2900 ( I also installed firefox and it cannot accesss the net either) and I have all the current XP service packs installed. The browser will not open any webpages and says basically that they cannot be found. If I reboot the computer, the problem goes away and I can access eveything again, sometimes I'm good for the whole day and sometimes I am off again in less than an hour. Now here is the really strange part. I am on a LAN with 15 other computers and mine is the only one this is happening to. In addition, when my tech guy runs the "ping" program, it shows my computer is actually connected to the internet, which explains why I am still able to send and receive emails without any problem! I have tried connecting via a pcmcia card and the built-in wireless card after I seemed to have lost my access to the internet, but the same thing happens with both of them. We are complelety stumped - can anyone shed any light on this?

I own a thinkpad yoga 14 with the active pen digitizer. One really annoying thing that seems to have popped up when I switched to 10 makes it nearly impossible to use the pen.

Essentially, the pen itself works, however attempts to use the touchscreen simply do not work for some undefined amount of time. When in laptop mode the time is approximately half a second.

When in tablet mode it ranges from 5 to 15 seconds.

Makes it really hard to use one note properly since you can't just use the pen.

Any ideas as to why this may be happening?

I'll cut to the chase - my computer is crashing, a lot. It seems to do it mostly when I am either 1) allowing it to idle and do nothing for more than a few seconds, or 2) performing medial tasks like writing in Word or something like that.

All of my info is attached in a zipped file.

I'm specifically focused on the three most recent crashes (Codes 3b, 24, and 1e) . There should be a lot more in there because my system seems to bug-check if I leave it idle for more than 20-30 seconds, but my computer wasn't creating .dmp files until I ran chkdsk with both options selected.

Let me know if you need any further info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why does my screen sometimes goes blank after a period of inactivity ( like 8 hours )? And sometimes not!. My monitor screen just turns off ( yellow light ). Then i just turn my mouse and screen goes back to normal. ITS TOTALLY RANDOM!

I disabled the screen saver and I disabled the option of the OS turning off the screen. Yet, the screen will still turn itself off after a period of inactivity. I'm currently using a Asus Monitor 19'

my pc is:

Asus Gtx 680
Asus Sabertooth Z77

Sew333, welcome to the windows 7 forums.

One thing to check on your monitor is whether it has it's own power save option. I have heard about that option but never seen it.

Hi, new to this forum and I have a major, major problem that I hope to not have to pay money for.

My computer is an Asus Desktop, CM1730 series, with a custom NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Card

Full Specs:

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 430

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 220 Processor

Memory: 4 GB

64 bit OS

Now the issue ive been having is that within a set amount of time on any application based game, my computer BSODs. It has no visual cue, just the screen goes dark and the system restarts. This started about a year ago, and has became considerably worse. Whether its Minecraft or Portal 2, my computer dies without warning. I have the MineDump below. I would like to at least know what the problem is before I send it in to GeekSquad repair, as I dont want them to spend weeks trying to figure out whats wrong.

Answer:BSOD while playing all games for a set period of time.

Did not know I needed to add the thing. Here it is:

My laptop is shutting down after a short period of time.  This started about two months after installing windows 10.   I checked my settings and they are what I want so resetting them probably won't help.  I saw an answer to this problem that read as follows:   What does "remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'." mean?   I don't see a box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen' with a tick. Open windows Control Panel, open Personalization, click the Screen Saver link in the bottom right and in the following window adjust the 'Wait' time to a more acceptable figure and remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'.  Click Apply, then Ok to save this setting.

Hi been awhile since I last posted. In the house we have a desktop and 2 laptops on the go in the house. The desktop is wired internet while the laptops are run on wifi. This worked fine until my isp UPC upgraded my internet speed from 50mb to 120mb.. The desktop and one of the laptops still works fine but the acus laptop has web access for between 20 mins to 45mins before the wifi drops off and becomes limited access. The wifi needs to be renabled to regain access to the wifi which lasts another small while until it gets limited access again.

The laptop specs are:
Acus K53e
Windows 7 home premium 64bit
intel Centrino N100 wifi adapter
Ram 6gig

At the moment its running for 30 mins then wifi cuts off for a few seconds before starting up again.

I recently got a new PC from an online shop (Bolton PC) and I have had nothing but problems. It is custom made and I bought a seperate LCD monitor from Firstly the power supply unit failed and after months of hassle they fixed it under my warrenty. When it returned it refused to load window so I paid nearly 200 quid for a technichian to fix it. The current problem is the monitor switches off randomly after a random amount of time. I have used a different monitor and that also fails leading me to think the problem is with the PC and not with leads or the monitor. The screen will go black, the green light switches to orange and a 'no signal, check signal cable' message is displayed. This morning it switched off but when i removed the usb stick for wireless internet the screen instantly came back on. I wonder if this is a fluke and am waiting for the next time it switches off to see if that is causing a problem.Any suggestions welcome. thanks

I am just about ready to take this to another computer repair shop and tell them to go through the system with a fine tooth comb and fix all the remnant problems.
To make matters worse I cannot get the computer to boot if there is anything connected to the USB ports.

i am using IE7 with latest updates for both it and windows XP...

i have recently got my pc back from a friend having been away for 2 seems they didnt maintain it very well in terms of virus protection and updates!

I have spent a large chunk of time downloading all the recent updates and have cured some problems but not the this....

I get the 'page cannot be displayed page' after a random period of time after booting. MSN messenger still works but not the internet or pokerstars which i've been on! (luckily for play money at the moment!)

i have had a long read through various sites including this one and have tried various things, including downloading 'malwarebytes' 'adaware' and 'hijackthis'

malwarebytes picked up 6 problems and they have been removed, i was wondering if someone could check this HJT log for me as my exp with the registry is basically 0.

I have a home server running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a PC with an Asus P5N-D motherboard. (nVidia 750i SLI chipset, nForce 10/100/1000 NIC)
We have around 10TB of hard drives connected to it and all are in RAID 1. (two 2TB+2TB arrays with Seagate Green drives and one 1TB+1TB array with Seagate 7200.12 drives)
Randomly, it will decide to slow down from gigabit to 100mbps. (My router shows gigabit as orange and 100mbps as green)
That's very unfortunate for us seeing as we transfer hundreds of gigs of data through it regularly.
If I unplug the cable from my router (Netgear N600 DR3700, DD-WRT v24-sp2 (02/17/11) st) and immediately reconnect it, it goes back to gigabit. (The light also switches from green, 100mbps, to orange, gigabit)

Here is a screenshot of my advanced network settings box.

And here are the settings I have selected:

Network Address: Not Present
Priority and VLAN: Priority Enabled
Speed/duplex settings: Auto Negotiation
EVERYTHING else is set to Disable

Under Power Management, "Allow .... turn off to save power" is unchecked.
Any help? I'd rather it stay in gigabit mode.

Hi there, I normally leave my computer on overnight so I could do things such as defragging, virus scans and sometimes downloading.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, which I installed 3 days ago as I got a new hard drive. The system was blue screening since then, so I'm guessing it's not a faulty hard drive, OS or memory (Replaced memory and done 20 hours of memtest86+)

I bought this machine about 7 months ago, but since then I have replaced the motherboard, memory, graphics card, CPU cooler and hard drive.

It only seems to bluescreen when idle, like when all it's doing is downloading on uTorrent or has finished doing a defrag.

According to bluescreenview, it has been caused by dxgkrnl.sys, atikmpag.sys and dxgmms1.sys . It was these causing it before the reinstall as well.

Answer:BSOD when idle for a long period of time.

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

We have had a bunch of computers coming in and our customers have the same complaint, only works online for a short period of time.

I've been unable to find a common thread between the computers, except for windows XP.

A wipe and reload fixes it, and a new nic fixes it.

Different brands have had the problem, different antivirus programs on the computer, different computer makes, laptops.

Upon plugging the patch cable in, it acquires an IP and it'll be fully functional for about .5mins. After that .5mins nothing works, can't ping google, can't browse websites, can't even ping the gateway/router/local computers.

G'day all,

My computer with XP Pro when idle for 15 minutes (exactly) the hard drive will start up chattering by itself.

I open "Task Manager" and find that dfrgfat.exe is running.

No 3rd party defrag programs installed, only the Windows XP Pro default defrag.

I run defrag "analyze" and it states hard drive not needed to run defrag.

Once Task manager opens, the dfrgfat.exe stops running till computer is idle 15 minutes again.

There is nothing in Scheduled Tasks.

Any help be much appreciated, this is driving me nuts.

Answer:[SOLVED] Defrag starting by itself after a time period

Searched for dfrgfat.exe and found that the process belongs to Diskeeper:

and it's most likely installed somewhere, some way. Look in the Control Panel, Remove Software area.

I'm not sure if this is being caused by malware or spyware, I am just gonna make sure. My computer keeps telling me something is wrong with the Winsock Provider Catalog. My internet will work for a little while and then I will lose connection. Then I will have to restart the computer in order to get back on the internet. I notice I lose connection faster if I'm downloading something.

I have tried using Heaven DX11 to stress test the video card and ran it for..45minutes+ allowing the GPU to get to a heat of 80C and no BSOD.

It has BSODed when playing Dota 2, or Borderlands 2. (I don't play many games)

It BSODed once when I finished playing a game and chrome opened 32 tabs on accident, but this is a beast of a machine it should be able to handle it.

Hello, recently my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6400, running WinXP Media Edition)'s been failing; it freezes anywhere from ten seconds to five minutes after I log in. I'm unable to install an antivirus because the laptop freezes during installation. Safe Mode seems to be, well, safer, although even so it has frozen.

I'm unable to install the antivirus (Kaspersky) in Safe Mode because Windows Installer is disabled, and none of the solutions I've found online seem to do the trick. And I suspect that even if i could get the installer to work, it'd freeze halfway through anyway.

I have no idea what's causing the freezing; it might not even be a virus at all. I've noticed that the laptop always freezes at the "Copying new files" stage of the Kaspersky installation, although whether that has something to do with my own timing or that procedure I can't guess. Also, the time that the computer did freeze in Safe Mode, I was attempting to rename a file.

The computer is completely frozen; Num Lock / Scroll Lock can't be activated/deactivated, the mouse doesn't move, etc. I can't even shut down without either pulling the plug out or holding onto the power button.

Answer:Laptop freezes after a short period of time

That model has been out for about three years? How long have you had your Inspiron 6400?

We need to know the configuration, including hard drive size, brand, free space, as well as memory installed.

It could be that the CPU cooling is too full of dust, hair, fiber, etc. to cool adequately... or that the hard drive is failing, or that you have inadequate memory. But it could simply be an infestation that needs to be cleaned out.

Have you tried re-enabling Windows Installer? Have you attempted to use MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware, ComboFix, Windows Defender, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, or other top-flite spyware detectors and removers?

(Cell A1) Time Arr: 23/06/2010 3:30:00 AM
dd/mm/yyyy - ddd - hh:mm AM/PM

(Cell B1) Time Dep: 24/06/2010 6:00:00 AM

(Cell C1) Time at Port:

Hey guys,
So I am running an Hp Pavilion a6244n computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have just started to recently have some really annoying issues. When I try to open google chrome (or any other program really) the computer doesn't do anything for literally like 3 minutes, then it opens. Now when it opens it will work for a little while but then it will stop trying to load pages. I will hit new tab and it will just load a white page and I can't do anything. It took me 5 minutes to get to this website alone. After awhile the computer starts working and everything is smooth but then it freezes up again. I can still click stuff but it doesn't load or do anything. Another example is in Windows Media Player. When I click to play a new song sometimes it just says media changing for a good 5 minutes before it ever works or if I hit the X to close it, it will take just as long. Nothing works at all when the computer freezes. I can't open anything like computer or control panel nor can I close anything. Any ideas?

Answer:Computer randomly freezes for a period of time

Can I assume you're defragging your hard drive regularly?

If so, then try booting into Safe Mode with Networking. Then attempt to get on the web and see if that makes any difference. If not, the problem is likely hardware related. So you could run a hard drive diagnostic program and check temperatures and voltages in BIOS to determine whether there's overheating or a power issue. You can also run mdsched.exe or Memtest86 to test for RAM errors.

this is a problem that is similar to many other posts on this site, but is just unique enough that the solutions don't work:

recently my internet has stated to err after a short period of time of being open. I have a DYNEX wireless enhanced G usp Adapter for my desktop so I can use the wireless in my house.
My computer is running win XP sp3. while on the internet my dynex adapter stops flashing, and the wireless icon turns red and says that it has "limited or no connectivity" When i try to re-connect to a wireless network, the computer says it's appempting to re-establish a never succeeds. the only thing that allows me to go on the internet is a restart. I have run every registry cleaner, disk cleaner, malware remover and AntiVirus that I know of, and no success. I have tried System restores, CCleaner, CHKDisk, and "repair connection" all to no avail. I have tried re-installing the driver about eight times.

I've got a problem, I need to find a peice of software that will allow me to disconnect a user after like 2 hours of being connected also i would like to have a warning that they are going to be disconnected in ?? Mins.

Unfortuantly I've not been able to find anything searching the web. Does anyone have any ideas on ways to accomplish this task.

Ideally what we just want to do is disconnect the user leaving their session active.

Answer:Software to DIsconnect a user after a period of time.

Some cyber cafe software? Disconnect from what? Wired? Wireless? Internet? Log off the PC entirely? Terminal Service session?

I am thinking of getting DVDXCopy; but, I don't know which edition. I have looked at this product comparison table and I see only the Platinum edition as being capable of copying a DVD in under an hour; but, there is no direct time comparison between it and any other editions.

Just based on what is written in the table, Platinum might do it is 59 minutes and 59 seconds and the other editions in 60 minutes or even two or three hours, for all I can tell from the table. In other words, for time comparison, the chart isn't very helpful.

Does anyone here have any of these programs? Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Answer:DVD XCopy--Time Period Required to Copy DVD?

I've browsed through many forums including the ultimate resource (this one) to no avail to my specific problem. I have found some that are close but not quite it.

Problem: Internet stops working after a few hours
Scenerios: Happens when there's no internet activity
Fix for now: Restarting Computer
Hardware: Onboard Lan (wired connection) for PC, we use an apple airport extreme router
I havn't installed anything specificly other than windows updates that make me think that I've done something but after a few hours my internet stops completely working on only one computer- the rest work. I've tried ipconfig /release then renew I've tried disabling and re-enabling the network connection, and have ran multiple spyware scans (i.e. Spybot S&D, Adaware, AVG anti-spy formely ewido) as well as my virus scanner (I use AVG). I use Zone Alarm's firewall which I've never really had any problems with, and I have checked all those settings to be correct. Also, I've tried shutting down Zone Alarm completly when I have this problem to see if it's the firewall, but I still get no connection. This hasn't always happened something that started like 2 weeks ago and I've just been doing a restart after its been left on for a few hours of inactivy.
One thing I did read that a guy was having problems on Vista (I'm using XP) and he had to shut down QoS and assign a DNS rather than getting it automaticly. I guess I can give that... Read more

Hey guys, I guess I'm back somehow. I've been missing in action from the computer scene for a good deal of time now.

I'm thinking about getting a job at Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. but in the computer department.

I went MIA from the computer scene around when we started getting the AMD 64 3200+ or so, and when the Radeon XT's started coming out.

So what I'm trying to find out is what new technologies have been introduced since then? What are the newer and hotter video cards, mobos, processors, and even audio devices out on the market and perhaps which are better performing if at all (not benchmarks but for example a P4 > Celeron)?

I see all these new video cards and processors and it just makes my head spin.

If anyone could just list what's come out since then and the new cards out and any new technology that'd be very sweet, I'd appreciate it.

Appologizies if in the wrong forum, I tried to fit it best.

Answer:Progression of computer components over a period of time

i cant believe i dissed Intels

Well first off, i guess i should introduce hello

I think some technologies that are big now...

SLi-Nivida dual card tech (think PCI express) ..and ATI's answer to it (crossfire?)
Dual Core CPUS (plus the fact that the prescott core is terrible)
SATA drives (3g is the newest that is)

and o neon lights..just kidding

I am running Windows 10 on my two home computers (laptop and desktop), and it drives me crazy that the console locks after 5 minutes and we have to enter a PIN to wake it back up. My wife has pretty much stopped using the laptop because she can't stand it. I had figured out how to disable it in Windows 8.1, but it appears they removed the option to add that to the settings in Windows 10. I have been searching the interwebs for days to try and find a solution posted somewhere and I am really surprised by the lack of complaints about this. I can't believe we're the only ones who find it maddeningly annoying. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions about what to do?

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

I clocked it and it took approx 30-35 sec to lock. I am not sure what might be the problem or if this is  al all normal behaviour. Have to look at 'Please wait' screen for 30 sec to get lock screen image.

So, I have searched the internet for what I am trying to find but the only thing that comes up is how to add a timer that will turn the display off after a certain time WHILE the lock-screen is on. That's not what I am asking.

What I am asking is if there is a way to auto-lock the computer after a certain amount of time. I know you can activate a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and then once touched again it will show up at the lockscreen. That's not what I want. I have the lock-screen setup to play a slideshow of pictures that I want to play when not in use. (This is a 58" touchscreen display that is used to interact with a powerpoint presentation in a public area). If I leave the desktop screensaver option on, it'll turn off the lockscreen slides. Why does that matter if the slideshow is running you may be asking? Well, I have a script on the desktop of this computer that will lock the computer with a single click. This is because when someone is done doing a presentation, I want them to be able to lock the screen immediately so that when they walk away someone can't just walk by and start messing with a wide-open computer.

So, idk if this is possible or if someone has a better solution but i'd appreciate any input.

Hey everyone, I looked around a bit and although I found quite a few similar issues, I was unable to find any exactly like the one I'm having.

Basically, every weekday, during the approximate hours of 7am-5pm, my internet will constantly drop. By this, I do not mean it completely stops working. I mean that every few seconds, or minutes, my internet will cut out for about 5 seconds. The reason that this is such a huge problem is I play online video games, and working random part-time hours quite often places me in between these hours when playing. Also, these drops take place even if I'm not on games. My computer will usually be the only one online, and no matter what I'm doing (even just doing something like reading an article online), the problem persists.

My ISP is Comcast, and my router is an ASUS RT-N56U.

Answer:Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period

You should change your wireless security to WPA2 with AES encryption.

The WEP you are using now is outdated and easily hacked into and usually will not work correctly with Windows 7 drivers. This could also cause the connection problems you are seeing now.

You should also uninstall any third party A/V software on this system as they are famous for causing such as you are describing.

Good Evening,

Earlier today my desktop icons stopped working. It happened without any warning or strange behavior from the rest of my computer. My Internet Explorer still worked and my programs still worked, but I had to access my computer programs through the start menu to get them opened.

The desktop icons did not give any error messages; they simply did not highlight and would not allow me to select them. Having no luck in searching out information about this issue in a general Google search, I came to your website to follow the instructions on how to check for malware.

I found further computer problems when I tried to follow the instructions under the heading: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide (incl. spyware, virus, trojan, hijacker). When I got to Step 3: Configuration & Setup I was not able to complete the steps for How to view hidden, system files & folders because I could not select Folder Options.

Try as I might, the computer acted just like it had with the icons; I could not highlight or select Folder Options but I could select the other choices under the Appearance and Personalization heading. Moreover, IE began locking up the Major Geeks website. I had to keep opening a fresh IE window in order to get back the your instructions.

Then, all of a sudden, as quickly as it ended. The computer simply began responding and all went back to normal. Despite my relief, I was nervous and decided to continue throu... Read more

I have a rig I use occasionally, as HTPC and occasional mule work, file service, etc.
I would like to not have it simply sleep when I have left it running and not returned, but rather have it shutdown properly.
Is there a way to do this within win7 controls, or is there an aftermarket, shareware, or scripting way to do so?

Answer:Power Mgmt: Is there a way to Shutdown after idle time period?

Create a batch file and link to it with Windows Task Scheduler and have the scheduler run whenever the computer has been idle for xxxx seconds/minutes.

In the batch file:
shutdown /s /t 300

Shuts down the computer in five minutes forcing all applications to close. You can change it to less time if you want. 300 seconds is five minutes arbitrarily chosen.

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L855.

I got a power problem and I will describe it below.

Everything began into a morning , laptop didn't power on , so i plugged it to power source, needed to wait like 30 minutes for power button to work, next morning same thing happend. Tryed removing the battery , same problem appear.

If the laptop get's shut down then turn on it works , the problem occurs when it is shuted down for a period of time.
I let one night the laptop plugged in, it started normally , seems there is something that needs to get warmer so pc can start.

Can someone tell me what that "something" can be? Can it be replaced? What's the real problem?

Answer:Satellite L855 needs to be plugged in a period of time to power on

It is not easy to offer some good explanation why this happen. Fact is that well working power supply electronic is responsible for notebook?s power supply.
I cannot say if something must be warmer or not but such case must be checked and investigated by Toshiba service provider.

Believe me in such case there is no much you can do about it. you can just make some tests but not more than that. I strongly recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider in your country and ask for help.
Let technicians check your machine.

Out of curiosity: is the warranty still valid?

Sorry I posted this in the wrong forum earlier.  I missed this one.
My computer is Windows 7 Professional.   It's almost three years old, and I haven't had any trouble on it until recently.
Despite my internet being connected tonight, I found there were websites I could not access.  In fact I couldn't access any of them.  Eventually I was able to access google, and then later a couple of other sites, but never too many at a time.  Then more websites started to work, but others wouldn't work.  I called my ISP, but they weren't able to detect a problem.
I put my computer in safe mode and was able to come here for help.  I've done a malwarebytes scan, but nothing came up.  For some reason this also seemed to effect my PS3 (connected wirelessly to my modem)
I'm at my wits end, and have no idea what to do.  Help would be much appreciated. I'm not sure if this is malware related or not.  My ISP seemed to think it could be a problem with the system, though I'm now able to access this forum and any other website without problem without being in safe mode.  I'd think that if my PS3 had trouble connecting, that it wouldn't be malware, but I'm not as computer savvy as I'd like to be.  (I'm not computer incompetent either thanks to working with computers for most of my life)

Answer:Internet wouldn't connect to certain websites for a period of time

Have you tried resetting your router/...?
This is usually achieved by inserting a paperclip into a tiny hole located on the your router model number to determine exactly where it is.
Press the paperclip end in and hold it in for approx 20 seconds...then release it and wait for the router to boot back up again
Note Be sure  you have the password for your internet a/c/router BEFORE you start.

Okay, this is a very odd problem.

What happens exactly is that at what seems a random point of time, usually long after the computer's been turned on though, a very loud buzzing and static-y sound will start playing from my speakers (or headphones if they're plugged in). This goes on for about 5 seconds, and then all audio cuts. Oddly enough, if I even try to play a sound (say I press Play on a song in Winamp) it won't even play the song at all, almost as though it knows the sound won't work. If I let a video play, there's a big lag time before it starts, and then it plays, but without sound.

If I wait long enough, usually about 5 minutes, the sound comes back. I at first thought it might be my speakers, considering they're almost 6 years old, but when I noticed this would happen to my headphones too, I figured it was the sound card. My sound card is a Creative SB X-Fi.

Any other information that you need, please just tell me. I hope this problem isn't as odd and uncommon as I think it is =P

All help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Answer:Sound stops working at random period of time

What are your complete system specs? Have you tried updating the sound card drivers directly from Creative's support site?

apologies if this has been covered before somewhere else.
I am trying to remove the time and date from the lock screen. having searched I have seen several customisation options but the only one that actually covered this specifically was to make a change in regedit:

this brought about issues relating to administrator accounts which seem to be a common problem with windows 8.1.
nearly all of the solutions were not available to me but I finally found I could make the change in regedit by changing ownership of the file and changing the format of the time to a space. unfortunately the date is still showing.
how can I remove the date?

further, just to clarify, does the original account I signed in with have full administrator privileges? are they disabled and need to be enabled?
ive seen the tutorial on the built in elevated administrator account, this didn't work on its own either. do some files require a change of ownership to be altered regardless of which account you are signed in with including the administrator account?

any help appreciated

The whole thing started to appear around 3 days ago. The problem is that everytime I boot, windows 10 stays on a weird lock screen without any buttons for a long long time. There are just 4 icons in the bottom right corner (shut down, accesibility, ethernet...) It sometimes manages to get to desktop, and sometimes not. Not sure what caused it, could be a recent windows update, not sure tho. I ran some HDD scans and everything turned out fine, also did a registry cleanup, tried disabling lock screen, and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions or solutions?

Answer:Windows 10 stuck at lock screen for a long time

Welcome to the TenForums @Taukonza

Could you please review your update history and see if any updates for Windows or Drivers were installed in last week?

You mentioned when you boot. Not sure if this is happening on restart or power on or both. If it is power on booting can I suggest a quick test. Open a command prompt (admin) and type

powercfg -h off

This will disable hibernation and in turn Fast Startup. Test. If no change you can re-enable by typing

powercfg -h on

After you boot have you reviewed your Event Viewer to see if Windows is kicking out any serious errors to the system log?

As the title says, I couldn't find it anywhere, but I was looking to have it so that after a set period of time Windows will automatically lock out the user (me). I'm not talking about having a screensaver come up, but I've seen it before, where it basically looks like the logon screen of XP, where you have to click on your name to go back into Windows, and type in your password again.

Can someone direct me to where I set this option? I thought it'd be in the standard haunts, but I don't see it anywhere.

Answer:Having windows lock-out after time (requiring password) but not screensaver

I've not seen this done outside the screensaver options, but this link has another option.

Reading more, I think what you really want is the screensaver option, but use the logon.scr with password enabled.
